    Huntsville Hospital
    I was out of surgery and in my room by about 1000. The male nurse was competent but uncaring. He did offer to help me walk within four hours of the surgery, which is a requirement of the surgeon. Thereafter I was ignored. I was supposed to be using an apparatus to gauge my lung capacity, the night nurse asked if I had been practicing, but I did not have one. My urine output needed to be monitored through the and quot;hatand quot; that is placed over the toilet bowl to capture your urine. The night nurse had to place the and quot;urine hatand quot; over the toilet bowl. In the late afternoon my husband left to go check on our pets and take a shower. He was gone around four hours. I called for the nurse twice during his absence, the nurse never showed. My call was answered by someone at the nurse's station promptly, but I don't believe that my need for a nurse was communicated to the nurse. It was difficult for me to get out of bed without assistance since I was hooked up to oxygen, oxygen blood monitor, leg compression sleeves, IV, and a heart monitor. The one thing that I did not have was a catheter. I needed to urinate and after 30 minutes I finally got up by myself (which was painful and not advised) and pulled the electrical plugs, disconnected the oxgyen and oxygen blood monitor, took off the compression leg sleeves, and went to the bathroom. Nothing was ever said about my needing assistance and the nurse not bothering to show up. But as I have stated, I think that the fault was the failure of the person that answered the call button not commuicating my need to the nurse. However, I do think that the nurse should check on a patient every two to three hours. Several times one of my monitors would start beeping, either because my IV bag was empty or because one of the batteries on a monitor was running low. If you wanted something done about the noise, you had to call the nurse, which of course meant that nothing happened. My room was right across from the nurses station and you could hear the beeping from my room. My husband learned to go out in the hall and wait for a nurse to go by to tell them that some of my equipment needed attention. The nursing station was always manned, but that lacks value when you are ignored. I was supposed to be released by 0830. The surgeon came and went. Two hours later my husband chased the nurse down to tell him that the physician had cleared me. I was gone within 20 minutes.
    If I had been more incapacitated, more heavily drugged, or less determined, I would have urinated in my bed twice during my stay. I left before noon on the second day and I was glad to escape. My advice is to never, ever be without a family member or a friend during your stay, You are taken care of by those that you bring with you, not by the nurses or staff at the hospital. Consumer Reports gave Huntsville Hospital poor ratings, which they well deserved.

    CRESTWOOD MEDICAL CENTER
    The facility was very crowded, so if you left your seat when you were called you did not have a place to sit when you returned. Although I pre-registered, I still had to submit to at least three separate interviews/confirmations regarding my insurance and etc. What is the point of pre-registration? I was at the facility 45 minutes before the required time and I waited for one and a half hours before finally being called to surgery. When I was finally called back to surgery. The nurse told me that we had to hurry because the patient scheduled for surgery after me showed up hours before scheduled and if he was ready for surgery before me, then my surgery would take place after his. I was stunned. It appears regardless of your surgery time, if you show up hours ahead of your scheduled surgery, you can jump ahead. I wanted my surgery no later than 7:00 a.m., but it was scheduled for 1:30 p.m., so applying their logic, I could have shown up for my surgery when the facility opened and my surgery could have occurred far earlier. To heck with scheduling surgery, just be the first one in the door. I did beat the other guy to the surgery table, but I was certainly stressed about the circumstance. I have had numerous surgeries, particularly oral surgeries, but I have never experienced coming out of the anesthesia crying in pain, begging for pain medication, while the nurse continues to ask me over and over why I am crying. Admittedly, anesthesia creates craziness and imperfect recall, but that is the first time that I have ever experienced a memory of such callousness. My hair is long and was lopped over the side when I was in recovery, so when the nursing staff moved around me or moved the gurney, my hair was pulled. They never noticed, so I fnally told them. God only knows what occurred when I was unconscious. My surgeon is a good and competent surgeon, but if I ever require his surgical services again, it will not happen at this facility.

    Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Alabama
    Their coverage has decreased over the years.  They frequently deny coverage for charges within their stated coverage area, so the physican's office has to refile.  While this issue rarely affects me directly, it impacts all of us because of the time spent by the physician's personnel.  BC/BS changed pharmaceutical companies in 2012, and the new pharmaceutical mail order process is three times more expensive, with a difficult payment process.  Their new mail order pharmacy denied a new prescription, stating that I had no refills.  It was a brand new prescription written with zero refills.  I spend hours on the phone trying to get the prescription filled.  My physician talked to the pharmacy without success.   The mail order pharmacy finally stated that they returned the prescription to me, because it was inappropriately stamped by them as "invalid," and was now out of date.  They requested that I send them another new prescription.  I was forced to take leave from work, return to the physician's office, and request that the physician issue a new prescription.  Forltunately, my physician had been involved in the process, so she believed me when I told her that I had not received either the drug or the "invalid"  stamped precription.  I finally received the drug more than two months after I initiated the process.  I received the first initial  "invalid"  stamped prescription more than four months after I sent it in.  It took the mail order pharmacy more than six weeks to return the "invalid" stamped prescription, after they assured me that it had been returned.  I truly question the authencity of my drugs from the mail order pharmacy.  In addition, I can pay under a dollar for a month's supply of some common prescriptions from my local pharmacy, while the mail order pharmacy is happy to charge me $10 for a three-month supply.  There is no consideration for customer loyalty.  The bureaucratic layers within BC/BS create zero accountability.  Good luck if you have a serious problem, because no one will help you, and no one wants to help you.   I remain with Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Federal Employees Program because the insurance is widely accepted in the area that I live, and because the other choices appear to be worse.  The new insurance requirement is certain to increase cost, increase frustration, and decrease coverage.
