DMER MORRISON WATERPROOFING CONTRACTORS INCMy wife and I were in the process of buying a new house. We noticed that the finished basement had a musty smell so we decided to get a professional to check it out prior to completing the purchase. As MER Morrison was so highly recommended by Angie's List and by friends who had used their services we decided to call them for an inspection/estimate. A gentleman named Steve came out to the house and confirmed that there probably is a leak behind the drywall somewhere. He also stated that the sump pump was not installed correctly. He recommended that we open up the drywall to investigate for leaks at a couple of suspect spots and inject any cracks (starting price $575). He also suggested we replace the sump pump installation ($450) and consider a Humidex system ($1420). He also walked around the house from the outside and pointed out a few hairline cracks that may be a problem. Everything he suggested was reasonable, so when we purchased the house, we contacted MER to come out and do a more thorough inspection, to give us a more accurate assessment of what is going on, and also to replace the supposedly faulty sump pump installation. My wife attmpted several times to reach Steve, or to get someone else out to do the re-assessment, but our calls would go unretunrned. It would take 2-3 calls/messages before anyone would call us back. Finally, when we spoke to Steve we agreed that someone from MER would call to schedule a time to check out our basement again and fix the sump pump installation. Again, no call backs for 2-3 days. Then, on Saturday morning of that week, I got a call from a MER technician who was appraently at the house we had just bought wondering where we were. I informed him that no one ever called us to schedule an appointment, but in any case I will drop what I was doing and will meet him at the property in about an hour. And so I did. The technician that came out was named Tommy. He apparently has been with MER for 33 years. Wonderful. I asked Tommy what he was told to do in our house today. He replied that he was here to epoxy a crack in the wall, which is not the case. We have never found a true crack in any wall. Also, he had not been told about the sump pump. So I asked him to indulge me and to let me walk him through the property and explain my concerns, just as I did with Steve a couple of weeks earlier. Tommy seemed very knowledgeable. We walked around the house, outside an inside. He pulled away the carpet from 2 basement corners where we had suspected possible water intrusion. He found nothing. He looked at me and said: "I don't know why I am here." He did not see any obvious problem. He also suggested that we don't cut open any drywall at this time as he wouldn't know where to start or to stop since there is no obvious problem. Makes sense. Then he wisely suggested that we wait for a few rainy days to try to better specify where to cut the drywall. I was obviously in full agreement with his plan. He walked around the outside and looked at all the "cracks" that Steve had pointed out. He was very unimpressed with what I showed him. Finally, I led him to the sump pump which we were planning to repair based on MER's recommendations. He examined it and told me that there is nothing wrong with the current installation. That's when I found myself a bit confused. Who do I believe? The MER rep that initially inspected my house and suggested several hundereds of dollars worth of repairs, or the technician who apparently found nothing wrong. I decided to follow the technician's advice. Afterall, 33 years of experience is worth a lot. Frankly, I also appreciated his honesty in not just doing the unnecessary work. I decided to follow his advice and call MER back if a problem arose with the next rain. So, to recap, a rep/salesman pointed out several issues that needed to be dealt with at a substantial cost, but the technician sent to do the repairs informed me that this was unnecessary. No harm no foul.... but then they sent me a bill for their services. That got me a bit upset, as I would have never hired them for their services had they not told them they were necessary. In any case, mistakes happen, so I called to speak to a manager to settle the issue. A kind lady named Shannon answered when I called. She listened to my story and concerns. When I asked to speak to a manager, she informed me that Steve, the same gentleman who initially made the assessment was the regional manager. I asked to speak to his boss as Steve was difficult to reach and would not return calls. She informed me that he would be the best person with whom to discuss the matter. I reluctantly agreed and left my call back information. Well, it has been 12 days and I have yet to get a call back. I have sent in the payment for the "services" they rendered as I do not wish to have my credit tarnished. However, I will never go through the aggravation of dealing with this unprofessional company again and will surely never recommend them to anyone.- caron a.

FSoutheast Texturing LLCThey do acid stain, stamp concrete, level concrete. They do concrete work and they do decorative stuff. When they first came in, it would have probably been okay but I didn't know that an hour after he did a part of the job, it would mess it up. We still don't have it straightened. I wouldn't recommend him to anybody.- Claudia W.

DThis was an increasingly frustrating experience. After ignoring my instincts that perhaps his company was either too busy or too disorganized to handle the project well we ended up going ahead. My husband worked in the trades with him about 10 years ago and thought he seemed like a stand up guy. If I had just asked for some word of mouth reviews from people in Athens we would have heard enough to deter us, but we didn't do it because of time constraints.
He and his project manager were constantly vague or delayed providing information. Many important processes were skipped, including pulling a permit to repair a wall which required structural, electrical, and plumbing oversight. It was agreed that the back wall needed to be repaired before starting the porch, but then his crew went ahead and started the porch before even putting windows back in. This was when it was starting to get cold, mind you.
When they added not the back porch they pulled back about 8" of the roof line all the way across the back porch about 16'. After the porch roof was built it was left exposed with no tar paper for at least a month during which time we noticed water pouring in at the porch ends and through the wall onto our brand new door. When I finally reported this it took them about 20 days to get the roof covered with tar paper. I thought the issue was fixed at this point.
While there were many small details of the project that went wrong, either through their inability to effectively communicate with their crew or our needs being ignored, the biggest issue we encountered is the lack of professionalism and bullying that transgressed because of the water leakage issue. The week before they "finished up" we started to demo inside for a bathroom renovation we planned on doing. The inside of the wall, right under post for the new porch, was sopping. The brand new lumber and insulation we had them put in was soaking wet and a great deal of mold was growing. The owner said he would come and view the problem at the start of the next week. After we did not hear from him or his project manager, who had come to look and said they would remove the affected drywall and insulation, by Tuesday of that week, and after repeated instances where they didn't do what they said. We removed it ourselves and started drying it out. Unfortunately, the span of the the porch wall where moisture was getting included our kitchen and only working bathroom. Even though we have only asked that he deduct the labor for taking out the drywall and replacing the insulation ourselves, he has refused to take any responsibility for the leaking, saying that because we had a hole in our house that there is no way he caused further damage. He has even blatantly lied about why he did not come look at the problem. Prior to his work we did not have a closed wall system that was taking on water and while parts of our rafter system were and are currently exposed, our roof was not leaking into our home. Even after we took out the wall and were trying to dry it out, moisture was still coming into our home under the west side of the porch. The project manager said they would flash and repair that section, but it was not done.
In addition, when opening up that wall we noticed places where the wall framing was not attached to the sill and even scarier, places where there were no supports added to hold up the subfloor and floor which had previously been attached to the sill or damaged. Places where several feet of flooring where just hanging off the nearest floor joist.
Needless to say it has gotten ugly. His information is so disorganized that his final bid did not include the most recent change order and was about $1200 higher than it should have been. His communications about money have been bullying and he either does not respond reasonably to any critique or he ignores information. We have been working to reach a compromise to find a fair amount to pay him, deducting the work we have had to do to fix dangerous, damaging, or incomplete work, but he refuses to negotiate the amount he is demanding and is threatening and lien on our home and court. So, we have had a pretty bad experience.

AThis was our second venture with A Cut Above Carpentry, and like the first, it was flawless. We had linoleum in a full bathroom and an adjoining lavatory area. We had very old carpet in an adjoining bedroom, with a large walk-in closet. All old flooring was removed and replaced with a wood grained, ceramic tile. It all looks great - we couldn't be happier. As with the first job, Paul and his team showed up when they said they would, and the work was finished on time, and the project was under budget. Would we use the again? ABSOLUTELY!
