Business Description: We are Vollmers Tophat Chimney Sweeps and services LLC. We are family owned and operated and have over ten years experience in our line of work. We specialize in cleaning chimneys, wood stoves, Pellet stoves, dryer vents, Chimney repair, Chimney Rebuilds and stone work, Certified chimney inspectors, Snow plowing & salting. We also paint houses interiors and exteriors, build decks, drywall, Concrete, trim work and Cabinetry, Build Sheds and other General contracting work. We started this company as a passion because back in the 90s I was in a house fire and Received third-degree burns on 50% of my body. Because I woke up from a dead sleep and smelled smoke. I did not know my family was not home at the time. So I ran into my kids rooms Which were engulfed in flames already to try to save my family. After the fire report came in we found out that the owner of are Building did not keep up on the chimney upkeep. Which in turn caused the fire. So from that point on I made it my life long goal to keep families safe all across Wisconsin. And to make sure that not a single person weather your my costumer or just a stranger will ever have to go through what my family had to go through agin.

Recent Review: After a traumatic and costly experience attempting to work with another local firm (Hansen and Sons), I was hesitant to work with chimney specialists ever again. I finally called Top Hat. They performed the chimney cleaning at a fair price and performed repair on the chimney cap at no charge since they had to remove it to complete the cleaning anyway. Crew leader, Kyle, was incredibly helpful to me, inspecting every inch of my chimney system and thoroughly explaining strengths and weaknesses with the system and recommending work I could consider in the future to address the weaknesses. An absolute pleasure to work with!!

Recent Review: Tommy is extremely knowledgeable and skilled at what he does. He is friendly and personable. The only trouble is that because he is so good, and does all of the paperwork, invoicing, scheduling, etc. on his own, that it is hard to get him scheduled!

Recent Review: Great job. It was easy to schedule, and the work was completed promptly. Josh was punctual, efficient, and polite. He cleaned the fireplace chimney and examined the flue to the furnace; answered all of my questions; and left not a trace behind. After checking it from the roof as well as the basement, he also took time to explain that we should have LaClede Gas take a look at the furnace flue because it has a liner and also needs a screen over the top.

Recent Review: We had just bought the house one month earlier. During the home inspection, the inspector said that the chimney was VERY dirty and that we should have it inspected and cleaned prior to using it. The fireplace was gas and eventually we wanted to convert it to wood or pellet-burning. Our appointment was for late morning and they called at about 11 AM to say they would arrive around 12:10. (I had the whole day off work, so this did not bother me.) They did arrive at 12:10. The two-man crew first looked at the fireplace and chimney. I told them that we wanted to convert it to pellet burning eventually and that for now, we would prefer wood-burning over gas-burning. They advised that converting it to wood-burning was very easy and they could do it that day. We agreed to have that work performed in addition to inspection and cleaning. They looked inside the chimney and agreed that it was very dirty. (They said the reason for that was the bottom of the fireplace only contained vermiculite and the gas was burning really fast producing a lot of soot. They said that there should have been sand in the bottom of the fireplace to slow down the flow of gas, slower burning, less soot. They did not have sand with them so if we had wanted to keep it gas, they would have had to go get supplies.) Next we headed to the basement to check out the gas connection to determine if the gas valve could be capped. They identified the appropriate gas pipe and said they could cap it. Then they went up on the roof to inspect the outside of the chimney. After the inspection of the chimney, one man cleaned the chimney using a high powered vacuum while the other man capped the gas valve and removed the gas pipe running to the fireplace. The hole in the floor of the fireplace needed to be filled with refractory cement, which he also did not have on hand (we said we could finish that). The man cleaning the chimney was very courteous. The other man was also courteous but evidently he approached my husband and my husband's friend (who were playing video games in the basement at the time) about making six figures without even leaving the house. The other thing that was slightly odd about this man (who seemed to be in charge) was that he was pretty short with the other man (almost like husband-wife bickering), which I found a bit unprofessional. He did show me the ash trap and advised that we should get a hearth rug and a thicker log rack for the fireplace (since wood fires are hotter than gas fires). The man cleaning the chimney was very clean and did not leave a mess. The estimate for the cleaning and inspection was $157. The final bill ended up being $202, but they also capped the gas valve and removed the gas line ($45). The fireplace was also super dirty (and so was the sweep by the end), so I felt that $202 was fair. He gave me a flier about corn-burning inserts and said he likes them better than wood pellet burning inserts and also gave me a quote for the corn-burning insert. I would probably use this company again, but I would be equally likely to check around and use someone else since I this experience was good but not spectacular.

2 workers arrived slightly early (far better than late!), were very polite, took care to not dirty the house, and gave advice on how to position the fireplace glass- either all open or all closed to avoid hotspots that could potentially shatter the glass.  They also reviewed general fireplace best practices- start a fire slowly to heat the chamber, and burn hardwoods, not pine.

After several delays (due to staff turnover per the provider), the chimney got cleaned today.   I had been annoyed about the delays, but I have to say the service provided was excellent, and Jayson (owner) came out personally.  He spent the time to explain fully everything.   would use them again.

It is chimney cleaning so hard to see inside, but it appears as though they did a good  job.  Also went onto my roof to check as well.  Were basically on time and in and out quickly.  I'd use them again.

They used new tarps to protect my white carpet and were fast and efficient. They identified cracks in my chimney cap that need repair and gave me an estimate to do so. They were pleasant and quick. I would use them again in the future.
