Recent Review: UPDATE: It's now spring of 2015 - work had to stop for the winter, but we got the concrete deck poured, the deck was stained and control joints cut. It looks amazing! Had a late start this spring due to the weather -- given the layout and the hilliness, we couldn't bring heavy equipment down the hill during rain, which there was quite a bit of, along with the cold. But once Bright started back up, things have moved very effectively and efficiently. These crews know exactly what they're doing. The foreman is extremely knowledgeable and they've been able to answer all of my questions. They've listened to my input in how I wanted things laid out, and they don't need any supervision once they know how I want things. They installed a retaining wall in front of the kitchen which is absolutely fabulous. It curves around rather than being angular, which I didn't think they could do. They helped me put in a PVC water pipe prior to pouring the footing so I could get water access to the wood deck just outside of the kitchen. The stairs down to the pool area are amazing - at least 10 feet wide at the top and 36 feet wide at the bottom. They look like stairs to a Mayan temple. They just finished putting in the paver pathway. I watched the work and they put down a very thick layer of stone and concrete dust, compacted it extremely well, then when it was ready, laid out the pavers. When they were in place, they put long bars of rebar along the edge, hammered in vertical rebar to hold the horizontal rebar in place, and then place concrete all around the edges covering the rebar, and ensuring the pavers would not move, even the pavers at the edges. The concrete edging is lower than the pavers for grass to cover, so it's not going to show, but it will do the job beautifully. The work is almost finished, and I'll put in a final update when we're done. If you have concrete and masonry work to do and you don't call Bright Construction Group (703-533-7422) then, frankly, I think you're wasting your time and money. PRIOR REVIEWS and UPDATES: Bright Construction is one of those companies that I consider in the top 5%. They started this project and move quickly, first meeting with me and going over the boundaries, what I wanted and so on. They dug huge holes for concrete piers, put in the wall beyond the pool on top of the piers, and then poured concrete to fill it all. They then backfilled that area, put in the wall with unbelievable footers between the pool and the house, took out the old deck, put in concrete steps that look like they lead to a Mayan temple (not kidding - wish I could post a picture) which they're putting facing stone and cap stone on this week. They've backfilled the whole pool area with fill from another job they're working on, and it's changed the way we view the pool area. It is absolutely amazing what these folks can do. They move quickly, and know exactly what they're doing. They are flexible -- I've changed the size of the concrete deck, extended the wall between the pool and the house, and have asked them to add these and other changes to the contract and bill. The CEO has been out a couple of times to see how things are going; the foreman is an expert in concrete and how to make things work. My realtor said recently that if I'm looking for a concrete construction, the Portuguese are the best. It turns out the CEO and the foreman are both Portuguese. After the first two days, the pool area was cleared, leveled, and concrete piers and footers across them were poured. Two concrete trucks, one concrete pump truck, and a couple of mid-sized kubota-like vehicles. This is a more difficult location to access, down a hill in the back yard. I'm very impressed. They know what they're doing, and it's clear that they have a lot of experience with this kind of work. This whole area had a lot of fill dirt laid down before the houses were built more than 45 years ago, so they had to dig the holes for the concrete piers (which are about 5-6 feet in diameter, I think) down to the soil below the fill dirt. They staggered the piers on one side of the pool area and tied them all together with rebar before they poured, so that the piers closest to the pool are tied in to the ones further from the pool, which prevents any movement and strengthens each individual pier. The concrete deck will be poured on top of the compacted fill dirt and the concrete piers -- it's 4000 psi concrete -- other quotes I had gotten from others were for 3500 psi concrete. Bright has been extremely flexible with the changes I've requested -- you don't really know some things in advance -- you have to wait until you see one part done before you realize you want to do the next part differently than originally envisioned. I'll update this review when the deck is poured and we're almost done with the work. At this point, if you want concrete work done, walls built, concrete stairs poured, stone work done, or any of the other things that they've done here in this pool renovation, you'd be wise to call Bright. I was really concerned about spending this much money and ending up with poor quality materials and work -- that is absolutely not the case here. They are doing excellent work, doing it very competently, and using very high quality materials. So happy, I've been going to their office to submit deposits every few weeks, without any prodding. Would I call them again for a significant job? Yes. Your money will be well spent.

Reviews in Williamsburg for Deck Builders

ADream Builders of VA
The design of the deck was fantastic, and much more interesting and creative than anything other deck companies were offering. The price was great, and the workers were diligent and respectful at all times. Due to some circumstances out of their control (delays with HOA approval, permit issues, worker illness, the derecho storm) the completion date was pushed back a few weeks from the original estimate. But we are 100% satisfied with the final product and would highly recommend Dream Builders to anyone looking for a great deck-builder.

The old deck was removed, carted away and the new deck installed far more quickly than I imagined possible. The new deck is impressive in both workmanship and quality. I really like the "low" maintenance Trex product.

APrestige Deck & Fence
First, let me say I was thoroughly impressed with all aspects of this project, from the estimate all the way to the install. Let me start from the beginning. We needed to get a deck installed on our newly built home. I contacted multiple companies to come to the house and give me an estimate/design for the deck. Jeff came out and won me over. He was the only one who drew up the design with his computer program on the spot, allowing me to visually see what he was talking about. This was very important to me because then I could tweak the design to be exactly what I wanted. Jeff's design was by far the best idea I had seen. He suggested things I didn't think of (diagonal floor pattern, bump out on one side, round the edges). These three things makes the deck look absolutely beautiful. Secondly, Alex (the owner) made the transaction seamless. He did all the hard work and kept me informed the whole way. He submitted to my HOA for approval, got all the permits, sent out the utility company to mark public utilities, and scheduled the inspector to come out during the install. I had to do NOTHING. Alex was also very competitive with his price (another plus)!! Lastly, Brandon and Jason, the 2 man crew that came to install the deck were awesome!! Every day, they showed up early in the morning and worked right through until quitting time. Seriously, they never sat idle, even during lunch! I have a 3 year old son, who was very interested in them and wanted to be around them a lot. They made sure to be patient with him and to use appropriate language the whole time. They even answered all of his questions, no matter how ridiculous... such as if they have ever seen a dinosaur before. When they left, not only did they clean up after themselves, but they even put grass seed and hay down on the areas where they had been walking around a lot. Also, you could tell that they had pride in their work as they should because they are true professionals at their craft! Overall, The deck is better than I ever imagined. The quality of material and workmanship is stunning. I even overheard the inspector asked where they got their wood from because it was and quot;top qualityand quot;. I just can't say enough about how happy I am that I chose this company. I would recommend them to anyone who will listen. Thanks for the awesome deck, guys!

Once they started the work it went fast and they did a fantastic job. Only downside, the owner is slow to respond to emails and phone messages. Would hire again however.

CPrince William Home Improvement
It didn't take long for the deck to be completed. Maybe a week...due to weather. The guys were on time and were professional. Back to the beginning...PWHI knocked on our door with flyers for home improvement projects. We wanted a deck, so we gave them a try. The Sale associate was very knowledgable about their product. But, PWHI can be pricey. We really wanted the composite deck but due to price we chose the pressure treated wood deck. The deck was completed in May, looked pretty good. However, there were and still are large cracks in the wood. Some have been corrected and some not. We are now in the month of July and the deck hasn't passed the County inspection yet. PWHI has been back out to our home several times making corrections. Some that we requested and the majority from the County inspector. We are big on excellent customer service, professionalism and quality. PWHI is lacking in quality due to that fact that they can't pass the County inspection, which is beginning to be frightening. At this point I would not recommend PWHI. Update 7/2014 Yes the deck has passed the county inspection. However, we wasn't satisfied with the way that PWHI was going to fix the problem and requested that they fix the issue a different way. PWHI agreed and the problem and issue with the county was resolved and the deck passed the county inspection. I upgraded responsiveness to a B. Because PWHI continue to address the problem until it was fixed. We will have to see how everything goes from this point on before we can clearly say that we would use and recommend PWHI again.

FSMOOT DECKS & DESIGNS
Gary Smoot was very friendly initially, but became easily agitated and difficult to work with during the course of our project. He made several mistakes while building our deck and tried to correct the situation, but in the end his efforts were futile. As you can see in the attached photo, the deck boards have a wavy appearance. Please reconsider another deck builder for your needs! While his prices are a bit lower than other builders, it is not worth the headache to deal with his unprofessional behavior.

Dreambuilders did a fantastic job for me. I am incredibly pleased, and I recommend their company for all of your deck needs. 1. Dreambuilders came out to give me an estimate. Unlike other companies that came out, he took the time to ask questions, have questions answered, offers choices, and make sure all requirements were recorded. Most companies should do this anyway, but I felt there was more personal contact with the estimate process. 2. The craftsmanship is excellent. I cannot begin to express the satisfaction I am finding. Most projects have a bucket list of items that need to be touched up, repaired, or redone, but I am unable to find any items that were not done correctly. 3. They stick by you during the entire process, from estimate to HOA, to building, to county inspection. Words alone cannot express my satisfaction. All I can say is, you will be satisfied with the results.
