Recent Review: Robert is obviously an expert in the field of structural engineering. We discussed my concrete wall problem in great detail. He is very busy at this time, and we need to find a time when we are both available to inspect the wall.

Recent Review: JES submitted a creative and affordable solution, but the JES engineer assigned to the job left the company before the job was finished. Though the job turned out well, and we were very satisfied, we had to do much of the overseeing and work checking ourselves. The work site was not neatly maintained (e.g., tools all over the place). The completion of the job was not done in a timely manner, but that was somewhat understandable given the personnel turnover. Given the high quality of the work, I was tempted to give a grade of A, but I just couldn't because of the reasons just mentioned.

Recent Review: I contacted several structural engineering companies when a home inspector said the home I wanted to buy had a possible structural issue. The big companies had a long wait period for an engineer and they also had hefty fees and couldn't do a flat rate job. I called Randall A Strawbridge, and he was available within a few days for a flat rate. He came prepared with overalls and a mask for filtering dust so he could crawl up into the house crawlspace and examine the structural issue. I crawled in with him, and he pointed out what he was looking at and what was wrong with the house. He provided a report with drawing in a few days. I would highly recommend Mr. Strawbridge.

Recent Review: This guy is an amazing engineer. He can design anything, in any style, whether it be an addition, entire home, business, including sunrooms and garages. He is very good at remodeling designs and his price is very reasonable. Having been a successful home builder in the past, he knows construction and building codes. Other builder's depend on his expertise and enjoy working with him. My requirements were very specific (e.g. all doors handicap accessible, first floor master). He came up with different designs for me to consider in laying out my floor plan to make it more efficient and save money. He was very patient with me considering this is the first house I have built. He answered all of my questions and never made me feel ignorant (although I was very ignorant about many architectural things such as finding the right parcel of land, soil reports, septic tanks, drain fields, drilled wells, and the whole health permit and building permit processes). If I had an idea he didn't think would work, he would show me why and find an alternative way to achieve what I wanted. I could take him pictures of things I liked (e.g. doors, outdoor trim, built-in bookshelves) and he would explain to me the process to incorporate them in the design, and could ball-park the majority of the costs, and give me alternate suggestions and ideas I would have never thought of. There is literally no wasted space as he designed my first floor rooms (i.e. study, dining, kitchen, master bed/bath, family room) to branch off the rotunda he placed in the middle of the house (including a plaster dome in the ceiling over an exquisite, yet affordable, wood floor medallion). It turned out better than I could have ever expected. He worked closely with my builder and provided advice and guidance to the subs when needed. Mr. Price was able to educate me on the building process, answer all my questions, and refer me to different businesses (e.g. Fergusons, Agri-Supply), highly experienced closing attorney (i.e. Michelle Ferris of Ferris and Ferris in Midlothian), and a survey company (i.e. Baseline in Petersburg). I was able to find the best deals thanks to his personal referrals and introductions. Thanks to Mr. Price, I now have a dream home more beautiful than I could have ever expected. His excellent work product, cool ideas, and extraordinary design skills significantly increased the appraisal of my home. I'm moving in with a significant amount of equity already on the books. The results were remarkable given the current state of the economy. Turns out it was cheaper for me to build a home with exactly what I need, rather than finding an existing home and remodeling it to meet my requirements. I highly recommend Mr. Price of Netcad Drafting, Inc. as a very experienced engineer with excellent people skills. I could not have made it through the difficult process of building a new home without his experience, assistance, patience and kindness. He is a true master when it comes to architectural design and building processes. I have no hesitation in recommending his services.

Bob was very personable and his knowledge on the subject was immediately apparent. He laid out all my options and didn't pressure me in the least to spend more money than was necessary. If I should need the services of a structural engineer in the future, I will not hesitate to call on him again.

I asked Mr. Mills to send me a bill for his consultation, but he refused. He told me to give him a call if I got into the project and had anymore questions. He was extremely friendly and helpful. If I EVER need any more work done in the area of structural engineering,my first (and probably only) call will be to Mr. Mills.

CNet Cad Drafting
Their drafting is basic, standard and fast so their product wasn't detailed enough for what I wanted. They were originally supposed to give me full drawings with structural advice because they are a structural engineering group. They only gave me a drawing of what the addition would look like. They were not very responsive when I was sending emails back and forth to correct any mistakes. Initially they were good. I stopped using them because I could draw better drawings myself. Their price was very reasonable if I didn't have experience at all using Cad. It was reasonable and affordable. The quality was okay. Initially their responsiveness was good. They were originally punctual and not punctual after the fact. They were late on sending me the drafts and then they were not responsive. I have since brushed up on my Cad skills so I won't need them.

Not very well. They are not what is represented on their website. They may do good work, but their way of trying to sell you things you don't need, instead of helping you understand your issue that you called them about is not what I expected, The salesman never emailed me his report, or estimates, either. But I did get an online survey, which I give them good marks on thinking they were going to follow through with the promised report, and estimate to fix it. Next time I'll wait until the "product" is delivered. So I prematurely gave them a good recommendation. However, to be fair, they were punctual when they came.

FHawks Renovations LLC
Hawk's Renovation was recommended to me by a Structural Engineer whom I worked with to draw plans for said work. This was actually my second time contacting them with hopes of simply receiving a competetive estimate for work. The first time I spoke with someone at Hawks I believe it was Frank Hawks after discussing the work no one ended up calling me back to set up an estimate. I have several years of carpentry and General Contracting experience and contacted Hawks because at the time I was working in the DC area and did not have the cycles to perform the work myself. After essentially being blown off the first time, I hired another Contractor to perform the work. A few months later after being less than satisfied with the work of the Contractor I hired for the original project I figured I'd call back Hawks Renovation to see if they would give me an estimate for some other work I had which needed to be done. I thought that my first experience with Hawks was an aberration. The second time contacting them did lead to estimator Kurt coming to meet me at the property to discuss the work. After discussing the work I was advised that I would receive an estimate within a week. I was advised that they would need to contact their mason in order to provide the full estimate of work, this was understandable. After a week passed by I contacted Kurt and he stated he was still awaiting the estimate from his mason. 2 weeks passed and I had still heard nothing from Hawks Renovation. So I called back again to inquire about the estimate and was told that the estimate had not been sent off due to some "computer issues". Once I received the estimate it was addressed to a Mr. Travis, that, is not my name. I'm not even sure how that type of mistake can even happen given that my name is in my actual email address. I know how much this work cost to perform. I received an estimate of $5500 for the masonry work, which was only about 12 linear feet of cmu and a brick veneer. I got 3 other estimates on this work from masons and this quote was 3 times higher than the estimates they provided. Also I was quoted a price of over $1200 dollars for replacing(sistering) one joist. Most carpenters charge between 150-350 for a single floor joist replacement. The estimate was really a joke, just an email written with made up numbers. The purpose of him sending it was merely for reasons of obligation. This company has a pretty good rating and was recommended to me so it is possible and perhaps it is likely that they do perform good work. To me, all phases of performing a job is important from the initial customer contact to job completion. Sometimes general contracting companies get so large or become so busy that they gain the ability to pick and choose their work and selectively decide whom they decide to work with, this is their right. It is also both the consumer's right and responsibilty to bring attention to such businesses.
