Absolute nightmare experience with AKB. Run...do not walk away from this company! The contracts, one for baths and one for kitchen) indicated work would take up to 2 weeks with some allowances for minor delays. This project took 6 months to complete with no shows and broken promises time and time again even though the house was vacant and AKB was provided a key for access. The GC Mike would repeatedly lie about when the work would be completed and about delays including stories about hospitalization and broken down vehicles for their subs and often just not show up or provide any reason. I escalated to David the designer but the situation did not improve despite more promises. Finally, I escalated to the owner who would not return my calls so I had to drive to the Stafford showroom when I knew he was there to discuss the job. He basically told me that I have to escalate to David because that is his job and what he pays him for and only once the job is done if I am unsatisfied should I let him know. I explained that I had already escalated to David and he kept reiterating his point until he called the GC Mike to the store to discuss my job. Mike explained that he had addressed the issues with the subs that including drinking on the job, bringing their pitbull to the house while working and bathing him at our house, and leaving their beer in the fridge. The site was a constant mess and tile work had to be redone in the bath because of the poor quality of the plumber/tile contractor. They ripped out the encapsulation in the crawl space under the house during bathroom demo rather than drop a tarp and protect the less than 12 month old new encapsulation. A new sub was brought into fix the tile work and it was mostly fixed with some issues that I just decided to let go as I cannot afford to keep the house empty longer losing $1100 a month while the house is empty. A few other highlights 1. Significant damage done to drywall that GC Mike first disputed but did ultimately repair after I threatened to contact the police for property damage 2. 4 Failed Bathroom inspections that required me to travel to county office several times to pay before new inspection. AKB did reimburse for the cost of the failed inspections but not my time or the delays to the project. 3. When payment was due based on schedule, AKB would call immediately and incessantly and even "offer" to come to the house and pick up payment on day 1. On one occassion I told them in advance I woud be in Texas for the week but they still called me every day. Keep in mind, I had paid over 75% of the job even before they started the bathrooms and they wrote the contract in such a way they would be able to collect 100% of payment before even finishing half the project (so read closely the contract and use of "and" and "or"). 4. AKB will not provide written estimates, will waive credit card fee when its convenient to them, and operates in a way that I have never seen any other company or contractor work. 5. As note earlier, 6+months for a kitchen remodel and 2 baths. These were very small rooms and the entire house is only one level and less than 1400 sq feet. 6. Project delays due to no shows, poor tile installation, poor carpentry, and the juggling of a few subs between multiple jobs. On a few occassions, my adult son heard GC Mike telling a sub what lie to tell to another customer about the reason for no show (yes, the broken truck excuse and flat tires were common). Now, I had read a few bad Angie List reviews about AKB and addressed this on my first visit with David. He assured me those were old issues and the GC on those jobs was fired. He showed me a stack of positive Angie List reviews on his desk and their price was competitive and David is a talented designer so against my gut instinct I moved forward with AKB. Do your own research, AKB also has other DBA names American Marble. I am sure if AKB responds to this post they will tell you that the GC Mike has been replaced as a result of my job and "other complaints." I did meet their new GC Tim and he did seem competent but too late to help with my nightmare project and experieince with AKB. While doing your research, you will find that I have many positive reviews for other contractors on this site. I have owned 14 homes and had 4 built (btw all were built in 6 months or less than the time for this remodel of a small kitchen and 2 baths) so I have extensive experience with contractors. I always try to give companies the benefit of the doubt as a small business owner myself but in this case I could not avoid commenting on my experience to save someone else from making a mistake with AKB. AKB will tell you if you were happy with the end result then you shouldn't complain, but I think most would agree that you don't pay a contractor $40k (price excludes all appliances, toilets, sinks, faucets, towel bars, lights, etc. as those you are responsible to provide) and expect to have to spend countless hours and trips fighting along the way, being disrespected and having your property disrespected, and being told that you are insignificant bascially because AKB US operations is small part of owner's efforts and therefore he doesn't have time to talk with you when you are not satisified with the work being done at your home.
