Recent Review: I initially contacted Mr. Handyman in order to have some projects completed in my home. I wanted to have a drywall repair as well as some caulking along with a shower door install and have them frame an opening over my fireplace for my television and have the wires hidden. I was quoted at a day and a half of work for the said projects minus the shower door due to the fact that Mr. Handyman felt it was more of a custom job so they referred me to someone else. In the mean time I scheduled everything else to be done after discussing exactly what was to be done in my home. On April 13th, the handy was scheduled to arrive at my home at approximately 1pm however he did not show up until 130pm.  As the handyman reviewed with me as to what would need to be completed, he told me that he could not do the fireplace because I needed an electrician and he could not be there until the next day, although this was discussed prior to them being hired what the scope of work would be.  He then proceeded to perform the services however he then needed to leave and obtain materials in order to perform the job. According to the contract, if the handyman leaves to obtain materials, he is on the clock and you have to pay. However, I was able to not have to pay due to making it very clear prior to hiring the handyman as to what would be needed in order to perform the task. However, the handyman commenced working and completed caulking of the stairwell and told me he would come back to finish sanding. This job has now cost me 3 hours  not including the hour that it took to go to the hardware store, and the drywall job was still incomplete.  I called the office the next morning to discuss my concerns and I decided that I would no longer use their services due to the fact that it took 3 hours of time just to caulk stairs and still had not completed the drywall. I was told that he would return to finish sanding the drywall repair since it had not been done. I was under the impression that I would not be charged since he did not complete the task the day before nor did he complete the fireplace, however this was all the work left to be done since I would not be hiring for anything else. The Gentlemen returned to my home to complete the sanding and said to me I will caulk your fireplace since I did not do it yesterday, and I said ok fine. Not knowing that at the end of this I would be getting billed, I did. I was to be charged 115.00 for an hour and a quarter of work. The amount was however reduced after stating that the fireplace should have been completed the first day. So I end up paying an additional 69.00 just for sanding. If I knew that I would be charged they would not have come back. I am disappointed with the company due to the fact that I feel as though with the price I paid out, I should have received more work. I called the owner and expressed my concerns however of course he did not feel the same. Mr. Stark was very disrespectful. I did not have any issues with paying out the money for the work I received, however when the man returned today I was under the impression that he was only sanding and that I wouldn't be charged and he offered to perform the other service since he did not complete it on the initial day of hire. Because of all this Mr. Stark stated to me that basically I can only afford a 20.00  handy man and that I was not a good fit for his company and he also had the audacity to call my husband a liar. Of course however I believe this was Mr. Starks way of what you call trying to beat someone to the punch. Needless to say whether or not he felt I would be a good fit for his company  or not did not matter because I wouldn't hire them again anyway and what makes him so unprofessional is the fact that he had call me back to say all of this after I paid the money. How unprofessional and callus of man Mr. Stark is.  Other than not caring for Mr. Starks manners however, the gentleman that did perform the work did an excellent job. I would ask him to do work for me but not Mr. Handyman.

Recent Review: Working with Brad was a pleasure. He is communicative, knowledgeable and friendly. His initial quote for labor was more than we had anticipated so he worked with us to change our plans a little to lower the cost. His second estimate, however, was also his final quote--there were no hidden fees or amounts. He started the job as scheduled and everything proceeded smoothly. He takes pride in his work and wants to make sure all the little details are just right so he was always responsive when we had questions or concerns. I would highly recommend him.

Recent Review: Rich and his crew were wonderful to work with.  Rich helped us plan a renovation that fit our budget and timeline and made it possible for us to keep on track with both. We trusted and were helped by his design-sense and regard for high-quality work. He guided us through all the details of the decisions that were ours to make with respect to selecting tile, granite, faucets, sinks, toilets, tub, etc.  He interfaced with the suppliers and sub-contractors, directed us to great sources for high-quality materials, and managed the flow of the whole project.  Cheerful, professional, responsive, and respectful of our needs that required occasional work-arounds with the schedule--Rich turned what we had feared would be a disruptive and stressful project into something that was enjoyable and exciting.    We were delighted by the final results and grateful for the courtesy, skill, and kindness of the whole crew.    More than once we felt Rich went the second-mile to do a good job for us, always in a generous spirit.  This renovation could not have gone better.  Three cheers for Virginia Bath!  They are the best.

Recent Review: We needed someone to replace our tile shower and fix a mold area below the shower.  The remnants of two bad experiences with bathroom remodeling made us realize that fixing only part of the bathroom left us with some other problems.  We asked Chris Langley and Joe Halverson what would it cost to do the entire bathroom.  They worked with us, listened to our desires, and offered reasonable options for the other parts of the bathroom.  Their prices seemed fair, so we decided to renovate the whole bathroom.  While at their showroom we picked out tiles, a vanity, and the granite counter. When Joe and his crew began removing the old shower stall, they found, along with the mold, structural damage to the wall framing.  Joe found that he could fix the mold problem from the shower area without cutting into the dining room ceiling below. He said that the structural repair cost would be offset by not having to go into the ceiling.  Joe took his time with the shower pan telling us the steps it takes to get it right.  The tile went up perfectly including an inset shelf.  They had sent us to Dulles Glass for the shower doors.  The doors were the last thing installed and and the frameless glass is stunning.   We had purchased fixtures, an exhaust fan, towel racks, medicine cabinet, light fixture, and a mirror. This was agreed to in the contract.  Joe picked out a toilet that he recommended. installation of each of these was done very well.  They recommended paint colors to go with the tiles and fixtures that bring the whole look together. We are very pleased with the job they did.  The fit and finish is impeccable.  Little touches throughout resulted in a bathroom that is so much nicer than we had expected.  The grout work and caulking is so precise making the tile and fixtures stand out.   The two workers who performed most of the jobs were punctual and cleaned up every day before they left.  Prior to the start of the job they put down plastic across all of their walk and work areas.  The second bath, although less work, had the same level of quality workmanship.  This bathroom required removing wallpaper and painting.  It looks great. Joe Halverson was the foreman of the job.  Joe was so easy to work with and totally professional.  I could call him any time and he readily answered my questions.  He explained all the procedures to make sure we understood what was going to be done.  At the end of the job Joe said that ServicePro would be there if we have any problems. It was a great experience.  We recommended them to a friend and would recommend them to anyone else renovating a bathroom.   We now enjoy using our bathroom again.  It is a showpiece.

ASteve Spratt Improvements
All went well and workmanship and the workmen are top notch. We got three quotes each time but always can back to Spratt. They always showed up on time, made sure the surrounding areas were protected and when they left at night you could not tell that they had been there. They last job they did for us was our bathrooms. They was an issue with the shower door and they stayed with it until we were satisfied. They come highly recommended.

I submitted a request on 12/4 (via the mrhandyman.com service request form) to have a shower door frame repaired.  I received a automated reply email shortly thereafter.  It's been 5 days and I still have not heard anything back from the company.  Time to find a different company.  Why do they have an online service request form if no one reads it or follows up on it?

CThe Virginia Bath Company
Rich was very polite for the most part and responsive to emails. He provided some good recommendations regarding installations. His estimate was reasonable. The estimated start date was honored. The job took longer than estimated and was prolonged due to waiting for replacement glass for a shower door (the defect had to be pointed out) and waiting for the painter to finish. The installation appeared OK but there was a general sloppiness and inconsistency in work (not all identical items were installed similarly) and several minor adjustments to items for good working order had to be pointed out before they were corrected. Multiple paint drips were on left both the walls and vanities, debris was left in the paint, which had to be pointed out before it was corrected.  Several items were scratched, broken or stained. A window blind valance clip was broken, he offered to replace it (after it was pointed out) but I know from past experience they no longer make them, so I found a substitute. The master tub and mirror were lightly scratched during paint cleanup necessitating replacement of the mirror and framing which ended up leaving a small amount of indelible dark adhesive on a light colored carpet. The tub was polished but the scratches remained. Minor scratches were made to the shower doorframe, the master showerhead nut and to a new doorknob. When the painter apologized for scratching the mirror and demonstrated the way he had cleaned the mirror, it exactly matched up to the (new) arching scratches in the mirror. At the end of the job I was accused (by email) of pointing out the mirror scratches in order to get an old mirror replaced for free.  Cleanup was poor at best. A large amount of construction dust coated everything in the master bedroom (he did offer reluctantly to have it cleaned, I declined as my cleaning crew was there that day anyway). Grout was left on tile, silicone caulk smears left on countertops and sinks, and there were small paint splatters everywhere. I had to ask for solder to be cleaned off of the driveway which was finally completed after two tries. Dark black handprints accumulated on the passageway door, no offer was made to clean the door, and when I asked to have the door painted, I was told the door had been dirty from the beginning and accused (by email) of essentially trying to get something for nothing.    No replacement bumpers for the vanity cabinet doors were provided. Cardboard recycling only occurred at my insistence, and I did most of the breakdown. When I asked if a final walkthrough was going to be done, I was told he felt as though it had been going on all along and left. The job ended poorly with an inuendo (by email) of my not wanting to pay the final balance when nothing of the sort had been said or implied, and in fact all prior payments had been made in a 100% timely fashion. The contract stated final payment would be due when the painter was done and I didn't think the painter was done. A 7 working day deadline for payment was issued (by email). The job has been paid in full as billed and requested despite my dissatisfaction. The bad taste from this job will last for quite a while.

AServicePro Express Inc
So while I was in search of contractor on Angies list I came across Service Pro Express Inc. They only had one review but it spoke so highly of them I had to see for myself. I had called four other companies that I had gotten estimates for and those companies wanted 20.000 to 30.000 dollars more than my budget was. I needed a company that could work within my budget. I was in the process of buying the house I currently live in now back in July 2012 when I first met with Chris, the owner of SPE Inc. The house was built in 2004 and it WAS NOT in an unlivable state. The floor plan just wasted much of the space with the builders design and the kitchen appliances needed to be upgraded but this was not a restoration remodel project. It was strictly cosmetic and was designed for my personal taste and preferences. So not only did I have a tight budget, but I had some custom request, the biggest being my new master bathroom. My old shower was a stall, barely 3x3. There was no light in it and next to it was an over sized garden tub that was never used in the 8 years the previous owners lived there. Now, I am 29 Y/O male and single, and have no desire to have a giant tub in my bathroom that I am never going to use. Everyone wants a big tub, but hardly ever uses it so I wanted a oversized multi-shower head roman shower tiled out with a large bench and wall niches. Two shower doors divided by a new 72in tall wall. There was an existing window that did not function as an opening window that I wanted to be glass blocked as to avoid the visually offensive mistake of curtains in a bathroom.  The second ?must have? was a wall to be removed in the kitchen to make way for an oversized breakfast bar and to open the space up into the great room more. Chris is the owner of SPE Inc. He called me after I reached out and we set up a time for him to come out to my home. Chris was great, Not only did he see my vision but he got excited about it as if it was his project. That was an unexpected touch. I told him my original budget and then he told me want to expect realistically. However I was reassured that he would do the best he could to make the budget work. He was very honest and up front with me about logistics and one of the suggestions he made was that if I do the bathroom project and the kitchen project together, That was going to save me money on labor cost. From day one, Chris was making sure that he was looking out for my best interest and as a result secured my business. He took measurements, showed me some samples and I went to the show room the following week, and picked out cabinets, carpet, granite, tile, shower designs and bathroom vanities. During this meeting we discussed time frames and payment dates. I had not closed on my home yet so we agreed on a start date that was a few weeks out. Closing was delayed a few as I was purchasing a short sale home and as a result Demo day got pushed back. Chris understood and worked around this. I?m in the Navy and was waiting on house hold goods, so I called Chris and asked him if they could do all the demo work before my personal things arrived and he made that happen. That morning in early September I got to meet the whole team including the Contractor, Joe. Chris was also there on Demo day. Joe, Chris, and I went over the plans again and when I returned home that afternoon, all Demo work was completed and they didn?t leave any mess. Over the next few weeks the shell of a kitchen and master bathroom that was left behind started to come to life. I left a key for the crew in a lock box and they let themselves in and every day I came home was one more day I was closer to the project being completed. No remodel project goes as smooth as anyone would hope, HOWEVER, Chris' assistant Kimberly was there when I ever I need something or had a concern. I was never in the dark about anything and when small things came up they made it right. She gave me her personal number, her work number and her email address and told me that if I had any concerns to not hesitate to reach out. And, As I tend to run a bit needy, I did. She is great! Funny and nice? A real asset to the SPE Inc Team. My biggest issue with this project all together was whether or not I was following county codes with moving the stove in my kitchen. While everything worked out it almost put a major hold on my kitchen project. I would suggest to anyone remodeling to make sure your new design is meeting all the codes for your area. Every day I came home Joe and his team briefed me on the work that they did that day. They ran wire, painted, tiled, constructed, ran plumbing, installed dimmers, floor trim, dry walled etc??They do it all!  They were always prompt and never missed a day that they said they were going to be at my house.  Joe is VERY knowledgeable on EVERYTHING and I appreciated that his team followed his lead. A personal touch that I respected was that they had a Veteran on my project named Hunter. He is bright and very respectful and nice. I never had an issue where the crew was disrespectful or unproductive. They were trust worthy, tentative and detailed oriented. They even watched my dog for me when I went out of town for three days! They really were the best crew for me. I have never remodeled anything in my life. I didn?t even know where to begin or what to expect and this entire team IMPRESSED from day one. My project transformed my house. It started with a Huge Demo and new carpets and ended with over a ton or granite that now makes up my kitchen breakfast bar island and a shower that can hold 5 people. Just what I wanted! haha. My bathroom looks like a roman spa/steam shower room. Different granite was also placed in the master bath on the vanity and Joe added a bit of finesse by place a matching piece of granite on top of the wall they built separating the two shower doors. That?s a very nice detail.  The huge granite breakfast bar floats on a sea of tile in the great room and really adds a ?WOW FACTOR? to my home. Chris, Joe, Kimberly, and their whole team brought my crappy drawing and designs to a stunning vision and turned a drab space into an entertainers dream. After they were all done with remodel, they clean the carpets that were not replaced by new carpet in the stair wells and the great room and they look brand new. That day they also did touch paint and trim work. IF YOU CARE ABOUT DETAILS THIS IS YOUR TEAM! IF YOU CARE ABOUT DETAILS THIS IS YOUR TEAM!! This team will keep it real with you about your project and do everything they can to bring YOUR vision to life.  If you can get this team on your team you cannot lose. Once I find some more money, I?m calling them again! Hahaha!
