Matt Koogler (the owner/operator of Ridgetop Excavating) is a skilled equipment operator - he knows how to make the heavy equipment get the job done. However, when the bill came it was WAY MORE than was expected and was very "creative" in how the charges were calculated and was not based on anything previously discussed or disclosed. So while Matt can do the work -- I will be looking for a different provider for all future jobs. My words to the wise for Matt Koogler/Ridgetop excavating .... (1) get everything clearly defined and priced in writting up-front - preferabily itemized; (2) do NOT allow any changes or "add-ons" offered from the written agreement; and expect that you will end-up paying well over $100/hr for his time plus any additional costs for materials, equipment rental, diesel fuel for the equipment, etc.

AFoster Well & Pump Company Inc
I could not be happier with the excavating and installation done by Commonwealth Underground. I had another contractor walk away from the job after taking the contract due to the underground utilities, but Commonwealth Underground was more than confident in their ability to get the job done. They completed the job quickly, professionally, and at 1/3 of the price of the contractor that walked off the job.

This was my worst experience with any service provider for any service. I hired Digs Inc. to finish a job I had started myself, but became uncomfortable doing because of unmarked electrical wires. Their estimator met me at my property and surveyed the work to be done. I received a quote two days later and immediately signed the proposal and asked that they begin work ASAP. Their workers, knowing there were unmarked electrical wires, began digging using a digging bar and struck an electrical line knocking out power to a nearby property. Dominion Virginia Power was notified and repaired the damage. I received an e-mail notifying me of the "incident" and saying they would have their Operations Manager a**** the site. I assumed that with 22 years of experience they would find a way to fulfill their contract perhaps by digging it another way, but after a week of non-returned calls they finally verbalized that they did not plan to proceed. They said that the reason for the delay is that the Operations Manager had recommended "Directional Boring" as a digging method and that they were trying to find a phone number for me for someone that did that sort of work but after a week were unable to locate anyone. I wish they had advised me sooner, as I already knew of a "Directional Boring" company (Foster Well and Pump dba Commonwealth Underground) and so I immediately contacted them. Their estimator met me at the site and said the dig was not a candidate for directional boring. I asked if there were any other options and he said that he could hand dig it and quoted me a price that was less than 1/3 of Digs Inc. price. I contracted Foster Well and they completed the work quickly and without difficulty. The only conclusion I can come to is that Digs Inc. is incompetent and gives terrible customer service. They were not able to complete the work and held up my job for over a week without even being able to locate someone else to do the type of digging they recommended. They mis-advised me regarding how the job should be done. During my last phone call with them they even had the audacity to ask me to pay for the time their guys had spent on the job. Here is the final e-mail message I received from them: "I have been unable to get in contact with anyone who would be willing to do the bore. I apologize for the delay and for not being able to complete the project as proposed. Because we were unable to complete it, we are not going to charge you for the work that we did perform. " As for Foster Well and Pump dba Commonwealth Underground I couldn't have been happier with their performance.

AMaintained By Mike
I brought Mike on full time from Jul 15 until Aug 31st. He was in charge of all exterior work. He also worked with my other contractors and assisted with any painting, carpentry, debris removal, and overall logistics. Mike is a extremely trustworthy, reputable, and anyone who uses his services will not be disappointed. I would not be able to complete my renovation without his help. This is my second time using his services.

AAlbemarle Backhoe Service
Sometimes it feels like trustworthy contractors are rarer than hen's teeth. Not to mention smart ones. Brad Howard and his son Brad Jr of Albemarle Backhoe are both. They can figure out how to do anything, and will get it done in the best way possible for the job, and for your bottom line.

AVESS EXCAVATING LTD
Very prompt, professional, fast and were nice people. Very concerned that the job was done to my expectations. The owner, Mr. Vess, came out, inspected and assisted the guys as well. They actually exceeded my expectations. I would highly recommended this company to anyone.
