Reviews in Henry to Install Ponds

AWater Garden Designs By Tharpe Landscaping
The finished product is better than I'd imagined.  Mr. Tharpe is an artist with a vision who took my existing structure and created waterfalls and a water garden that looks like its part of nature. My fish are happy, my plants are happy, and my family is happy.  He is a talented landscape and water garden expert who created  a water garden that is easy to maintain, has the sound of a babbling brook, and is beautiful.  It draws you in so you cannot help interacting with the fish and the water.  We are looking forward to years of enjoyment...AND our next project.

ACardinal Pool Spa & Water Inc
When we moved into our new house the in-ground pool looked like a frog pond. Green and scummy. We were told it hadn't been opened in years. I contacted every pool shop in town asking them to come out and give us a quote for at least the part they could see needed to be done. Half never showed up. Only 2 submitted quotes. Cardinal pool was the only company willing to SHOW me what was wrong with the pool and explain how it needed to be fixed. They went the extra mile to use parts and supplies we already had rather than just charge us to replace everything. And they guaranteed their work. We've now used their service for over 10 years. Cardinal pools isn't the cheapest in town, but they are the best. They stand behind their work.

Norman Tharpe and his entire crew (WGBT) were outstanding.  When we called him for a quotation, he arrived promptly, surveyed the work and got back to us with an estimate within a day or two.  Not only did his proposal include more extensive work than those submitted by two other contractors, but his price was equal or lower.  He worked with us to ensure that we got exactly the design that we wanted in terms of features and budget, then scheduled us promptly.  While the start of the work was delayed by a week due to weather, he and his staff kept us informed and then showed up as promised.   The job went very quickly and efficiently.  Norman arrived the first morning with a crew of 4 workers, who worked very hard and efficiently throughout the week-long project.  They were always on time, courteous, and worked harder than any other people we have had work on our property over the years.  They always cleaned up after themselves -- no lunch wrappers or cigarette butts were ever left on the property -- it was just a pleasure to witness. The project wrapped up on time and budget, and we are extremely pleased with the final result.  Norman came by afterwards to explain the maintenance that should be done, gave us manuals for filters, pumps, etc., and answered all our questions.  I have dealt with many contractors on my property over 15 years, for jobs both big and small.  Some have been good, a few (including one that I'm dealing with now on an unrelated project) very bad -- more on that one in a different review.  I would heartily recommend WGBT to anyone needing outdoor landscaping/water garden work done at their home or business.  It was a pleasure to deal with a reliable, quality contractor who prices his work fairly and follows through.

It went very well and I was so pleased. I had spent thousand of dollars on this water garden and everyone I got didn't turn out to know what they were doing. Mr.Tharp came to my home and sat down with me and drew a design of my request and it was like I had met a friend who cared and wanted to make sure he understood what I wanted. The finish product is beautiful.

CGREEN ACRES LLC
The strengths of Green Acres included high quality work on patio areas and walls. They do extensive preparation that so far appears to provide a solid foundation for the patio and walls. The ponds they installed are quite lovely and overall we are pleased with the quality of the installation itself. Bill Garren provided good input on design. The crew generally worked very hard. In particular one member of the crew took the initiative to build a retaining wall out of rocks available at the worksite that solved a runoff problem exacerbated by the Green Acres’ installed masonry walls, but not accommodated by their design. The major issue we had involved the pervasive lack of supervision of the crew which led to mistakes, including the installation of a gutter within the parking area rather than at the bottom edge of the parking area—as we had repeatedly told Bill Garren. While Bill offered to remove and reinstall the gutter, we would have had a large repair in the parking area susceptible to generation of potholes in winter, so we opted to leave it where it is. The hardscaping plan included construction of a bench using a marble slab on site. A Green Acres employee crushed the marble slab by toppling a pallet of blocks on it. The marble slab could have been easily moved prior to placing the pallet adjacent to it or the pallet could have been placed elsewhere. We were offered no recompense for destruction of the slab or failure to construct the bench. They also ruptured the water line to the house and cut the underground phone line; both were repaired fairly quickly. Overall the work could have been done much more efficiently if adequately supervised, which would have shortened the time spent on the job and produced fewer mistakes. Several final details were not completed, in particular, the placement of additional decorative stones, which are plentifully and easily available near the construction site. Application of mortar on the front steps was totally inadequate, with dozens of gaps and holes left. While these gaps and holes were readily observable, the installer (Garren’s project supervisor) refused to comply with the our request to look over all the mortar joints and apply additional mortar where needed. Instead, he initially demanded that the homeowner point out each of dozens of defects. And finally, the crew laid a bed of gravel alongside the project area to facilitate the movement of their equipment across the bare clay. We now have an unsightly layer of gravel, in which we suspect nothing but weed grass will grow, alongside the new walkway. No attempt was made to mitigate or correct this gravel bed. A heavy truck delivering material crushed a brick pillar at top of our driveway because the driver turned in the wrong direction. We accepted Green Acres offer to rebuild the pillar and asked that they move it a couple of feet farther from the driveway. Although relocating the pillar would have resulted in substantially no additional work, Bill Garren refused unless we paid him to relocate it. We rather thought our forbearance regarding the marble slab and the incorrectly placed gutter warranted some consideration on his part. In addition, we would have appreciated candor on the part of Bill in realistically estimating the start of the project and the completion. He said he was delayed several weeks by rain. Undoubtedly the unusually heavy rain delayed him this summer. This does not explain or excuse his empty promises of a full work crew for the entire project, including when he would have people on site to correct discrepancies such as the mortar joints mentioned above and an incompetently installed electric cable for the pond pump that caused the pump to stop working. We did not have the full crew for the vast majority of the work, as the supervisor was offsite doing other jobs or attending to personal matters. Overall I think they are overpriced and I would probably not do business with them again.

FVIRGINIA POOL SALES & SERVICE
We hired VA Pools to paint and complete some repair work to our in ground pool.  They wrote us a contract of the work to be performed.  They signed it. We signed it and gave them a deposit of $2,000 on April 25, 2013.  Then we paid them an additional $3,533.20 on June 12, 2013.  The pool was painted but the repair work was never completed.  Since then, a new owner has taken up residency in the home.  The repair work has still not been completed.  When we called VA Pool, David Key said that he had made a deal with the new owner to perform other services instead of the services he had written and signed to us to be performed.  We were never made aware of this agreement.  In other words, they did not provide the service that was written and signed by them but still charged us for that work that was NOT completed.  We would like a refund of our money of the work that was not completed in OUR contract with them.

AGonzalez Landscaping Inc.
We found Gonzalez Landscaping at a home show in Roanoke in December.  At the time we were putting in a pool and needed someone to add a retaining wall behind the pool.  Gonzalez meet all the other competitors pricing by a small margin, but still came in less.  They were here anywhere from 8:30am to 5:30pm at night and it was non-stop working.  Called when they couldn't make it and didn't leave you hanging and wondering if they would show or not.  They only took a lunch break and the rest of the time working.  They built a 4' retaining wall around our pool, a 2' retaining wall and a patio with a fire pit and couldn't be happier with their services.  They have a great team and love the friendliness, hard working and passion they put into their work.  Everything is precise and accurate. Highly recommend them.

Norman told us the new Savio equipment we purchased was "garbage" and was good for nothing but being added to a bonfire. It was obvious he wanted to up-sell us on his favorite hardware. He said, though, he would install our materials, but sent an estimate of $15,000. It was a total insult.
