Business Description: The Wooden Boat Shop, LLC. is now under the new ownership of Butch Davis as of July 31, 2012 as he takes over the helm and continues guiding the business forward in the future. The company was originally founded by Jack McCarthy, Cincinnati, Ohio. Butch has been a friend and customer of Jacks and The Wooden Boat Shop for years and is now making a “dream come true” for himself and his family. During Butch’s high school years, he enrolled in wood working and refinishing classes as well as upholstery. He dappled in antique furniture upholstery and refinishing since high school and in 2001 he became very interested in wood boats and subscribed to wood boat magazines and clubs. Butch has owned boats and PWC since 1985 and have a dock and house on a lake. He owns most all wood and metal fabrication tools, shaping equipment, auto and marine engine electronic testing equipment, hand tools and a shop at home. He obtained a wood boat in 2002 and was soon introduced to Jack McCarthy who sold him materials and gave him professional training on the proper way to restore wood boats. “I restored my first wood boat and completed it in 2008. I have recently finished my second and will launch it in the spring.”

We were able to get a hold of Brad with no issues for quotes and to sign the contract and make our initial deposit and then never saw him again.  Our contract stated he would submit the permit within 15 days which took months and then when the county required engineering drawings, nothing was ever resubmitted.  It has been over six months of very little communication and no permit or any pilings/building for our dock.  I can not emphasize enough to NOT use this contractor and to look elsewhere.  He is not licensed and there is a good chance you will never actually get your dock built which is a shame.

BLUF -- DON'T DO IT!!! Brad began work quickly upon the signing of the contract in August 2012 and got a good number of the pilings set within the first weeks of the project, but once he relocated his heavy equipment the entire project slowed to a crawl.  The contract stated he would complete the work in 30 days.  From September of 2012 on we had to continually push him to return to work on our site.  In two instances (stairs down the hill and roof on the boat house) he sent crews who were completely unqualified to perform the required tasks and whose work was shoddy to say the least.  In both instances we insisted he tear out the work and start over, which he did.   The work dragged out for well into the second year, and key components of the project were never completed - no boat lift installed, no water to the end of the dock, pilings put in the wrong spots and never relocated per our many requests, osprey pole never completed.  Finally in about July of 2013 we gave up on Brad and contracted with other providers to complete the project. All along there were problems too numerous to list - some of the key issues were:  During the many long absences his crews would leave stacks of trash at the job site, both on land and on the dock - I ended up cleaning these on several occasions - removing the trash on the dock to preclude it being washed into the river by storm surge and cleaning the other trash piles for safety reasons. He had a boat lift delivered in parts and left it for months unsecured on our back patio - at some point it disappeared - I thought he had used it at another job site - he said it had been stolen - and wanted us to pay for it, or claim it on our insurance - of course we refused.  We have never had anything stolen from that property.  His insurance agent explained that Brad only had his tools covered and that was why he hoped we would file the claim.  Insurance fraud is not our style. To get 220 volts to the end of the dock we needed to bring new electrical service to the house and install new panels- it was only after contacting the electrician directly and sharing with him the amounts we had already paid to Brad that the electrician actually came to work on the project. When we got storm surge from hurricane Sand,y Brad's crew had left a number of pilings tied to the weather side of the dock which was in the mid-stage of construction - these floating logs crashed against the driven pilings for the period of the storm - one of them broke loose from the raft and eventually planted itself in the bottom to the east of the dock, causing a major navigational hazard and safety problem for us and our neighbors since the protruding end was usually just under the surface at slack tide.  I tied a line to it to make it easy to find and we asked Brad repeatedly to remove it.  We always got the run around - even though on a few occasions he had his heavy equipment in our cove passing within 100 feet of our job site. We tried everything we knew to try to get the work completed, including threatening legal action, all to no avail. Bottom Line - do not do business with this company.  If you do take a chance never give him more than 30% up front and the balance upon completion - otherwise you are likely to be as disappointed as we are.  Brad is personable but he is a cheater, a whiner and a quibbler - don't fall for it.
