Reviews in Kingstree for Roof Leak Repair

APowell Construction Inc.
William Powell and his employees did excellent jobs and took pride in their work. In fact, I was impressed enough to ask them to do further work, shortly after their first fine job. So, this review also covers a recent 1/20/2013 job. They were very friendly, kept busy, and did excellent cleanup chores. The price for both jobs was very reasonable, and there were no unexpected charges. I felt like I was among honest reliable people and am planning on asking them for more help this Spring.

He did the initial roof repair. Called him back out and he did additional minor repairs and searching for roof leak. Still hasn't fixed my issue. Won't return any recent attempts to contact him. Have had to go back and fix issues ourselves as we couldn't wait on him.

After a heavy rain there was a bad leak in my kitchen ceiling. I called Mr. Powell and asked him if he would inspect my roof. I had to leave for work, so I told him to feel free to come while I was away from home. He came out that day and called me with a report. The roof itself was in good shape, but he thought the water had come in via cracking around the pvc pipes that extend from the plumbing. He offered to seal all these areas for $200. I approved, and the work was done the same day. He left a bill in the back door. No more leaking from rain showers, but a bad storm came in late November and the leak came back in the same spot, but this time ust a small drip. I called Mr. Powell and he came right away. His two workers quickly re-applied the sealant to the area over the kitchen, and inspected the entire roof again, re-applying sealant if needed. There was no charge. A few more showers have gone by with no leaks. Mr. Powell was polite. very responsive and charged a reasonable price. I will see if the repair lasts.

I called him and he came out the next day. He gave me a date that he would come and do the work, and came back and did it. He said if anything went wrong with the work that he would come back out and fix it for no charge. They also gave me the best price.

Mr. Powell could not make the appointment due to crew illness, resulting in staff shortage.  This was no problem because he would let me know early enough in the day.  I understood and really appreciated his prompt communications. He answered all my questions and gave me advice on how to deal with the gables and the water heater compartments. He was always very professional and not pushy in any way.

In the beginning, it was fantastic. Mr. Fox was exceedingly professional and prompt in all communications. He viewed the work and returned an estimate in a short amount of time. We agreed on a price and scope of work. When I called with a roof leak, he was able to come fairly quickly to make repairs. On that visit, he requested a downpayment for the major bathroom work we'd agreed upon, and I obliged. And then the bottom dropped out. Mr. Fox became increasingly difficult to contact. When I paid the deposit, we were planning to start work within 2 weeks. Mr. Fox pushed the date back because he was helping people with hurricane repairs. When a month had passed without any start date in sight, he texted that he would do his best to get my work done before Thanksgiving. After Thanksgiving, he returned contact in mid-December and then did not respond. When he eventually returned contact in late January, he stated that he had been out of the country helping a friend and had no access to phone or email. I informed Mr. Fox that we no longer wished to do business based on a lack of trust. I requested our deposit be returned. Mr. Fox did not have the money available, however, with the help of an attorney, we received reimbursement of our deposit in March, 5 months from our original payment. As an additional note, the roof repair Mr. Fox made did not fix our leak. I don't fault him for this, as roof leaks can be tricky to find. However, he stated he replaced 2 vent pipe boots. When another contractor attempted to repair the leak, he reported that the one boot had been properly installed but the other, higher, boot was piggybacked over the old boot. I initially thought Mr. Fox to be very professional and trustworthy. My opinion changed based on what I felt was poor communication. Mr. Fox stated that he had experienced some unfortunate events and had gotten delayed by helping his friend outside of the country. That may have been the case, but the lack of transparity and breakdown in communication were deal breakers for me. *I waited to write this review until I could do so in a fair manner, without anger or malice. In no way is this intended to slander or defame Mr. Fox. It is meant only to share my experience for the benefit of those reading the review. Mr. Fox was at all times polite and mannerly, but simply was not the right person for my job.

Roof still leaks despite calling them out for 2 service calls. On the last call I decided to go ahead and have the gentleman take measurements for an estimate for replacing the shingles. I gave him my email address and cell number. A week or two goes by without a call or email. I call back and left a voicemail at the 469-8980 number- no response. I call a few days later on the 968-5573 number and I spoke with James or Jeff. Told him what had happened and that I was waiting on an estimate...no email or call after a few days. I called a third time and was told that they had my information but needed to track down who it was that got the original measurements. That was on the 7th and I have been going back and forth with just getting a stupid estimate for around a month. If they didn't want my business I wish they would have just told me so and saved me some time and grief!

I found Mr. Graham through Angie's List. I was impressed with the reviews, so I contacted him to come out and do an estimate. He arrived on time for the scheduled estimate and quoted me several different things, as he considered the roof and the interior repair two different jobs. I decided to proceed because the work needed to be done before further damage occurred. I scheduled the work right then and there. Mr. Graham and his crew arrived on time the day that work was to begin. The work was completed on schedule and I was satisfied at the time. However, only 2 years later, I began having the same issues with the roof leaking in the same place. The company didn't have a warranty on their work, so I was unable to negotiate any sort of repair through them. I had a different company come out and we decided to go a whole different direction with the repairs in order to develop the long term solution I thought I was going to receive 2 years ago.

All went very well. I will say that we probably could have had a bit better communication. Although, my schedule often contributed to missed calls, etc. For me, however, what mattered most were the results of the work I'd asked be done. Some may want (demand) a specific, tight time-line depending on the work being done. For the specific jobs I had Accubilt do, "strict" time constraints were not necessarily applicable. However, the time-frame from start to completion was satisfactory to me.
