Reviews in Edisto Island to Repair Cracked Heat Exchangers

AKessler Plumbing LLC
John from Kessler Plumbing very professional, called when he was on the way. Explained to me that the heat exchanger was bad and needed to be replaced. John looked into the replacement cost, after calling Rinai, John was able to find out the heat exchanger was still under warranty. To make a long story short, I only had to pay for labor to replace the part. Grand total: $ 240.00

The technician diagnosed the reason our electric bill had been higher this year than last, and he recommended repairing a small leak and adding a shot of refrigerant. My husband was able to perform the repairs himself, and the next electric bill was $100 less.

It took 2 days to remove old units and duct work and to install and test new units and system. Even got a manager drop in a few days after to check out the work and test system.

Requested an AC/HVAC "checkup". Technician was somewhat surprised that there wasn't anything wrong, I just wanted things checked for serviceability. Technician checked outdoor heat exchanger and indoor/attic units. Gave recommendations for future service.

He is generally easy to reach and he does respond. He is reasonable. The charges varies, if it is an installation, it is a lot more, if it is a repair or cleaning it could be towards a $100 or little bit more or even a few $100, it depends on the parts. I would recommend him. He does the job. He is reliable and backs up his work. He is excellent. He is good. His price is good and reasonable. His work seems okay. His responsiveness is generally very good. He is pretty punctual. We have not had problem with his punctuality. He is good in terms of professionalism. We do use him; we are going to use him in the next couple of days.

Our heater failed on a Friday with Christmas the following Wednesday.  I spoke with Andrew at 4:15 pm Friday afternoon for a ballpark quote (had received a quote at 3:30 from the company that had diagnosed the problem).  With temperatures in the 30's by Tuesday and company scheduled for Christmas Day,  I needed a new unit installed Monday or Tuesday.   After confirming the size and type of unit that had been quoted by the other company appeared to be correct for my home, he checked and found that the unit was available to be shipped in from the manufacturer's warehouse in Columbia on Monday and could be delivered on Tuesday and installed that morning.  Andrew could not promise that we would have the unit Tuesday morning since it was being shipped by an independent carrier over which he had no direct control, but he did promise to do everything he could to contact the warehouse managers at both ends and keep everyone involved aware of the timing.  The pricing was more competitive than my other quoted price.  Andrew made a special trip to my home early Saturday morning to look at the existing unit and confirm that the new unit was appropriate and could  be installed in place of my current unit.   He also reviewed all of the specifics about the model and confirmed that the model I was getting had stainless steel heat exchanger coils and was an upgrade from the model quoted by the other company.   He also said that he would schedule two teams to make sure that installation was completed as quickly as possible.  Andrew called to confirm Monday morning that the order was placed, he confirmed later in the day that the unit was in transit, and called Tuesday morning to confirm that it was being picked up by his crew (Alvin and James) who would be at my house before 9.    The installation went smoothly and I had heat by 11 am.  Alvin answered all of my questions and set up the thermostat programming with me.  A second crew came (as promised) while the main installation was occurring to measure for the shroud, went back to the shop to fabricate it, and then returned to finish up the job. I am very impressed by the customer service focus and professionalism of Berkeley Heating & Air Conditioning.  I was especially impressed with Andrew who literally dropped everything to make this all happen to meet my schedule.

FSmoak's Comfort Control
Smoak personnel were very professional as they fleeced us out of our money. The salesman came out and told us it would be over $7,000  to replace the unit. The $440 we had already spent would not be credited to the sale. I knew from experience this was an outrageous price and we eventually bought from another Angieslist AC provider. Total cost under $2,000.  In purchasing AC I have found a lot of very high markups from disreputable providers. My advice is to shop around. It is very difficult to get price information online but it is there if you look hard enough. That will give you a general idea of the cost of the hardware. Most AC pumps were guaranteed by the manufacturer for 20 years - lately they have dropped it down to 10. The new non CFC refrigerant is a lot cheaper, also. Take the total hardware cost and subtract from the quote you get. That should give you an idea of the installation cost. In Smoak's case the analysis was the hardware - heat exchange unit (outside) and fan coil (inside) were about $1500. That left installation costs of $5,500 - a lot to pay for what turned out to be less than one day's labor for one guy. Keeping in mind the $1500 is retail price so there is already a profit built into that. You can see why it is difficult to get A/C unit pricing online. In all fairness to Smoak, their quote included some new ducting which it turns out we did not actually need so I am not sure what cost that may have added to their quote.

AB&G Heating & Air Conditioning
The house is old (1950's) and, since I bought and moved in October of 2010, I have been alarmed during the heating season at the loud boom that occurs when the furnace turns on.  I finally decided to have someone out and hopefully fix this frightening problem.  B&G came out the same day and told me the heat exchanger was rusted through and the whole unit was in sorry shape.  From the serial numbers he could tell that the equipment was installed in 1983.  He told me he would have someone work up a price and get back to me. I got a call the following day from David of DCG Inc. and he came out to evaluate the situation in order to provide a price quote.  I believe B&G must be turning over their overflow to this company.  It may be because of the rise in business from advertising at Angie's List or just the beginning of cold weather with many repair jobs coming in.  I was initially a little leery and upset that B&G was not going to do the installation but after speaking with David of DCG Inc. and watching how he and his team worked, I felt confident he would deliver and get the job done right.  He and one member of his team got started that Thursday morning but ran into some bad duct work at the inflow vents.  He was apologetic and said that he had not foreseen that problem but would still stand by his price for the unit and installation.  He told me he would be back the next day, or if it rained like it was supposed to, he would return on Friday.  It did rain that Friday but his team showed up promptly on Saturday and began the ductwork repairs under the house.  My heat continued to run until later that day when they needed to shut it down and connect up the new system.  I was without heat for maybe an hour to an hour and a half. They finished up, cleaned up and, viola, I have a new system.  He showed me the evaporator coil and it also was completely rusted through.  My heat and cooling bills have been nearly $200 a month on a 1600 sq ft bungalow.  He said I may see those cut in half because the old system was in such bad shape.  I am hoping so.  My furnace is going on less often and there is actually warm air coming out of the registers.  I will have to get use to the sound of warm air whoosing up through the vents.  I can't recall ever hearing that since I moved in last year.  David from DCG called me this morning to check on the system and to see if I was having any problems.  That is good customer service and I appreciate the call.

Recent Review: Very well. Jake was very professional, polite, patient and thorough. Larkin (from the office) was great also. She kept us up on everything. The workers (installers) worked quickly. Left the house clean. David the supervisor manager came over a week later to double check on how everything is running and explained everything again. From beginning to end it was a great experience.

Recent Review: They arrived promptly as scheduled in morning and were done by noon. Old system (downstairs) was 17+ years old. Upgraded system to 96% efficient furnace and 14.5 Seer AC plus adding a variable speed blower and programmable thermostat. I considered upgrading to yet higher efficiency, but they did not recommend it (i.e. did not try to up-sale me) based on payback. Installed an Amana system; great warranty. Very professional in my opinion. Have used them again since for a breakdown issue with the upstairs furnace. Quick response in both instances.
