Recent Review: Replaced weathered wooden exterior trim with weather resistant vinyl trim. Very pleased with results and a fair price for the work done. I have more work/projects in store for Fogle Improvements from me.

Recent Review: The carpenter showed up on time and finished the job in about four hours. There was additional work needed to chisel out a concrete step to accommodate the new door. It was done at no extra charge. The old door and molding were removed and the area was cleaned up before he left. He did not have the correct caulking to finish the area around the concrete step but did return two days later and finished the caulking. We used Melhorn because our neighbor had used them. We felt that the price was not low. However, we were very pleased with the work and would recommend them to anyone wanting to have remodeling or carpentery work done.

Not only were they punctual, but exceeded my expectations. The speed that they worked at was fast!!! The trim was out and in and painted in 2 days. Crown mold as well as all base and door casing. The workmanship was top notch. I built the house myself but a car accident prohibits me from doing the work myself now. The attention to detail is what impressed me most. Martin took the time to match up trim exactly instead of using what he had on site. I know this took him an extra 2 hours of time and sounds trivial, but that attention to detail is what sets him apart from so many other contractors. I will continue to reccomend his company to anyone that asks.

I had him install trim work around the front door of my home. I had to call him back 2 or 3 different times to retrim the door because I was still getting cold air coming through it. I did ask him to fix my running toilet, which he never got around to for the price that I paid him. I asked him about waterproofing the basement and he came up with the crazy plan to drill holes in the cement wall to let the water drain out. He was then going to put a french drain around the whole basement. I only have 1 bad wall, and everyone else that I talked to says that you don't drill through cement. He was going to charge me about $4,000.00 for that project and so I decided not to use him.

Mel met with us in October to get an idea of what we wanted to do. He took measurements and gave us ideas about what was possible for the space we had. He returned 2 weeks later with drawings, a preliminary proposal, and an estimated cost. In the proposal, Mel researched the cost of fixtures and budgeted on the high end for estimating purposes. We asked for revisions in the drawings in an attempt to bring the cost down. Mel had his lap top with him and adjusted the drawings on the spot. In the preliminary proposal, Mel estimated the porject specifications: Project preparation Framing Demonlition General Demonlition Wall Framing General Pllumbing Bathroom Plumbing Wall coverings Ceiling coverings Interior doors Interior Trim, stairs and accessories Cabinets and counter tops Floor covering Interior Painting and wallpaper Project finalization When we accepted the final proposal, we signed a contract and paid a 3% retainer fee. Mel scheduled a day of shopping in early November. He took us shopping for the fixtures, cabinets, wall coverings, countertops, etc. Mel is very knowledgable about what goes together and what will look good together. I appreciated his assistance in that department. Mel tracked our choices for ordering purposes and for budgeting purposes. We were informed when we were within our budget and when we were not. Construction started before Christmas. There was trouble with the ADA compliant shower stall, which had to be ordered 4 times before one arrived undamaged. Our house only has 1.5 bathrooms. Being without the shower was inconvenient and Mel did his best to keep our bathroom up and working as long as he could. We did have a non-functional bathroom in the basement, which Mel hooked up for us to use while we waited for the shower. Mel finally asked the shower company to ship the shower stall in a wooden crate. That shower stall arrived undamaged. Construction was spotty between Christmas and New Year, but Mel's staff did do some work during that time. After the new year work progressed at a steady rate. Mel requests 3 % down when the contract is signed The final payment is 3% plus any extra costs that were add during the project. The remaining balance is divided in to equal payments and paid out as Mel and his crew begin each step of the project, for example: start of demolition, start of framing, start of electrical work, start of plumbing, etc. I found this payment process to be a good way of working. The bathroom and the laundry room are beautiful. I appreciate having the laundry on the first floor rather than the basement. I highly recommend Mel Kelley Design/Build
