Reviews for Metal Stairs in ${city

APORTLAND STAIR COMPANY
We had the staircase remodeled in our 1980s home.  The new staircase is Clear Alder with wrought iron balusters and it looks great.  Shane and his crew were wonderful to work with.  The work was performed on time and exactly as described.  The project took slightly less than a week and it was hardly an inconvenience given how neat and tidy they kept everything.  They communicated well and responded promptly to any questions.  I would highly recommend Portland Stair Company.

We had three projects.  #1. Wooden stair rail on hillside next to stone stairs was too short. We needed it made taller without disturbing original foundations. He did a great job, it came out better than I thought it could. #2. Fix instabilities in existing wood staircases. He looked at them, told us what was solid and what needed to be replaced/added. #3. A third project he looked at and told us was outside his scope but he gave us good advice for next steps. Overall, he did the work quickly and for the amount originally quoted. We are very happy with the result.

This was a big job with maple floors in the kitchen, family room, entry, stairs and upstairs hallway. We are so happy with the new look and couldn't be more pleased with the quality of work from Alex, Oleksi and the team of guys who worked on our home. Their skills and professionalism were impressive and appreciated. Thank you Ovi, Kelly and all the guys!

AA Reliable Handyman
Professional conduct and work from beginning to end. Trent, the owner, showed up on time for both the estimate and the job. He called ahead to confirm his approximate arrival time, which I appreciated.  He provided good advice on what needed to be done to meet the building codes. I provided the materials. He provided the labor and skill. Job was completed on time, within budget, and met all my expectations. I asked for a staircase that was straight, level, and met the building codes. And that's what he delivered. I would definitely use him again and recommend him to others.

Called Steve on a Thursday with an urgent need to have a gate installed at the top of my stairs to prevent falls.  He came out the next Saturday and had a design to me on Tuesday and had the gate installed in another week - custom built to match my existing 60 year old wrought iron railing. He installed it and then came back and got it while we were out of town to finish it and then came back to reinstall - all for no extra charge. He had lots of good ideas about the design.  It looks like it was part of the orignal installation. . I cannot say enough good things about this man.  You owe it to yourself to meet him and look at his work portfolio and get a bid before you do any work of this type.

I  have talked to a few people about the ramp and was impressed with Bob. I signed a bid and he began right away.  In two days the ramp was built and so useful.  He was the 3rd person to suggest building a ramp on the current stairs so we have both the ramp and the steps.  I had other people say they would be back but never came, even at a higher price, He cleaned up well after the job and came back when it was dry enough to paint. He will be doing more things for me.   I have a few little jobs and he will also take care of my yard.  I know he is dependable and reasonable and professional

DGREG LEE ROOFING
The roof work was performed adequately, and Greg seemed knowledgeable enough about what needed to be done to address a leaky window issue. Lindsey in the office was responsive when there were scheduling issues (which happened a few times, but it was during the rainy season). Do not hire this company to perform any carpentry work, however. They replaced solid 16-year-old stairs that had a couple of rotting boards with rickety stairs that shift and have nails that bend and pop out. When I called to tell them of these issues, which arose within seven months of construction, it took them three months (and many more phone calls) to come back out. When Greg did show up and meet with my husband, he downplayed the issues and said the "New York" in me was causing me to overreact. Insulting and unprofessional behavior, to say the least, but I was willing to let it go to give my two-year-old daughter a safe staircase to walk down each day. Greg eventually instructed his employee to add "a board" to fix the unstable stairs. The carpenter who came to do the work admitted that solution wouldn't work but said he couldn't do anything else. I spent more than half an hour with him--taking time off from my workday--to talk through the issues and discuss possible solutions. In the end, he replaced a few nails with screws and then took off without a word. I emailed the office manager expressing my displeasure with this non-solution and they tried to charge me more money to fix their shoddy work. I was actually amenable to paying just to end the whole ridiculous process (and since the carpenter seemed to understand how to fix the problem), but when I asked them in writing to guarantee their work or else refund my money, they said they were no longer interested in working with me. That was a first. Greg repeatedly tried to claim the frame was unstable--the one part they did not replace, per my instructions--but the 16-year-old staircase they took apart was completely solid save for a few rotting boards. The steps never shifted underfoot, nails never popped out; the original wood had just reached the end of its life. The frame is clearly not the issue here , their poor work is. In the end, I had a terrible experience with this company. The roof work has held up ok so far, but the wood work, performed by "master carpenters" (in Greg's words), is unstable and hazardous. This review would be very diffferent if they had accepted responsibility for their actions and redone the work properly.

AL & L Construction Services Inc
I had called several trades people before finding Ray. Two came to look, said no way. One looked, said he would rebuild exactly as it was [not ok, if you make a change, you have to build to code] and wanted lots more money. It seemed to be a job too big for small operators, and too small for big operators. Or some just said it sounded like too much work because of the nature and location of the staircase. Ray responded to my initial questions, visited the site, suggested options, more discussion because what I wanted didn't match what he was telling me [eventually I realized he was right- it couldn't be done the way 'I wanted'], and he was upfront about his timeline. His written estimate clearly indicated materials, the job specifics, and disposal of old materials.

It was an Angie's List Big Deal that I purchased. It didn't go very well. It wasn't great. When we started talking about the project, I don't feel like he told me how he was going to do the project, and what he was going to replace. I asked him to redo the stairs and he redid the stairs. He replaced the footboards, but he didn't replace the backing for the stairs, and so when I said I thought you were going to replace the stairs, he said he did replace the stairs, he just did not replace the kickboards. I was pretty disappointed. I said stairs and he said stairs, and we had 2 different meanings of what that project would entail. I paid for the materials. The labor was $295, but I paid for the wood that he used.

Steve arrived on the scheduled date, and accomplished the job in a professional manner;  relieving me of worry that someone may trip and fall on the broken stair tread.  The stair railing was too rusted at the break point to re-weld, so Steve welded a gusset to secure the railing.  He gave good tips and advice on maintaining the stairs and railing.
