Recent Review: Upon waking in the morning, I discovered that some serious electrical issues had arisen during the night at my house.  Some lights and outlets seemed to work while others did not.  My sump pump acted strangely, the garage door wouldn't operate, the electric stove was inoperative, the refrigerator had quit working, and the air conditioner had quit.  I called Downey and was told that they could have someone to my house in about 1 to 2 hours.  A service technician showed up in about 90 minutes and quickly determined that I had lost one of the three power "legs" that fed electricity to the house.  He said that it was a power company issue and told me to contact my local electric utility.  I was told during my initial telephone call to Downey that there was a $100 charge to have someone show up.  The service technician told me, however, that the total diagnostic job took all of ten minutes and that his travel time was negligible because he actually had to drive right by my house on his way to his next job.  He told me that he would not be billing me for his service.  I was flabbergasted!  He gave me his card and said that if I wanted to compensate him for his efforts I should give them a call the next time I had an electrical issue.  His card now resides in my folder of preferred service providers.

Recent Review: John came out to discuss our project in a helpful and straight forward manner.  Once he had a sense of what we wanted done and in what style he offered us choices of cabinets, tile, backsplash, and granite countertop.  There wasn't a wide array of choices in each style but we are quite happy with what we chose.  John is very good about keeping the customer in the loop and letting us know who would be coming and for what.  The work progressed nicely with the only delays being the wait time on the cabinets and counter as they were custom made at outside sources.  John went out of his way to make himself available for any and all of our questions which could be numerous at times.  When black mold was found on the subfloor under the refrigerator we agreed to replace it.  John purchased spice racks for the pantry door after my wife worried about having space for our numerous items which was not in the contract.  He quickly changed cabinets that proved to be too wide to clear our new refrigerator and quickly bought a new disposal when the original was junked by mistake.  John also changed the garden window to include screens although it was an extra cost for him.  Our kitchen has curved walls which added special cabinet and counter customizing challenges.  John and his carpenter handled these with aplomb.  All of the people who worked on the project were courteous, professional, and adept.  No project is perfect but my wife and I are extremely pleased with how ours turned out.

The technician determined that the thermostat and the top heating element in the stove were both broken.  To order the parts (this was a 25-year old stove) would have been around $500, so we decided to buy a new stove, which turned out to be less than the parts would have been.
