Recent Review: Crowdsourcing site for interior and architectural design. Interesting service and if you are comfortable with internet shopping and a little risk, IMHO, worth the cost.  My project:   Redesigning kitchen and family room (great room concept) and we needed interior design/style advise for the project. The site posts a "competition" for the project, you determine what amount of money to offer for the competition (site recommends an amount, but the customer is free to change if needed.) Within 20 days, we had 20 designers signed up for our competition from all over the world. In the end, 8 designers submitted designs. We picked our top 4, rated all designs and the top three were selected based on ratings -- one from France, USA and Serbia. Honorable Mention went to country of Georgia. First, second and third place received a portion of the award money.   Pros and Cons:  You, the customer, must be comfortable with the risk of paying for something and not knowing if you'll like the result. For me, this was part of the process and an acceptable risk.  You don't have a face to face consultation. The site has a "wall" where you can post ideas, photos, communication with the designers or architects. I resolved this by posting my houzz.com design book on the wall to give designers ideas of our likes, dislikes, etc. You can also post requirements and constraints for your project. Toward the end of the competition (a deadline is set when you submit a project) a lot of communication occurs with the architects and designers. Expect it, it's part of the process.  The website is fairly rudimentary. Online/chat help is available but is somewhat hit and miss.  You can send designs to friends and family to rate. This is helpful in making a decision.  Overall, we got a number of ideas between the designers and were very pleased with the process and project.

FEstill Painting & Home Improvement
About me... I know how to do most of this work myself. I work a full time job and simply do not have the time. When I was younger, I did plenty of home repair and remodeling. So I am very familiar with what it takes to do the job correctly. I hire folks because I am too busy with my full time job. I have hired my share of handymen / remodelers over the years. Most of these folks have been fine people to work with. Nobody is perfect, and it's not always the contractors fault when things go sideways. With that being said, I strongly urge anyone considering hiring this guy, to run the opposite direction, and fast! I could literally write an entire book on how horrific this encounter was. I will highlight some of the major issues. High level summary: Very sloppy work in general, major unresolved issues. Looked like a total novice DIY had done this work. Not an alleged professional.. First of all this guy showed up reeking of alcohol constantly. I later learned he had been recently nailed for driving under the influence, sentenced to jail, and a suspended license. So yes, my fault for not doing a background check before hiring this nitwit. I will let the pictures tell the story primarily, but will outline a few bullet points. 1. Was supposed to install 1/2 plywood on top of existing sub floor, prior to laying the floor tile. An attempt to cut corners, and assumed I would not notice. I bought the materials, but he did not install the plywood as I had instructed. Nor did he inform me about this deviation from the plan. 2. Rather than take the time to cut out the proper holes for my ductwork. He built the wall over it! Now I have to hire somebody else to cut a hole in the green board, cement board, and tile to allow heat and A/C into the bath. 3. He was paid to remove the old plaster and lath in the ceiling. I double checked the work and he left the lath and drywalled over it. Guess he assumed I would not know any better. 4. Look at the pictures of what they left me with.. I am now spending my own time trying to rework the debacle they created. Good thing I know how to do this work.... 5. I hung up plastic sheeting over the doorways to try and keep the dust confined to the work area. He ripped it all down, and when confronted stated it was in his way. I told him it was my house and my rules. Very arrogant, and unable to follow orders from the person paying the bills. 6. Generally worked only 3 to 4 hours per day. 7. Showed up and asked for full payment, in spite of the fact the job had not been completed. Stormed out of my house when I told him not until the job was done. 8. Sub contracted a total novice to lay the tile and grout. I am still trying to clean up the grout work this guy did. 9. Who in the world installs a draft blocker on the outside of a home? He installed a bathroom fan, and then installed a draft block on the outside of the house. If you know what these are, and what they look like. Then you know they go on the interior. I had to explain to this idiot, how this should be do

He has worked for our neighbor as well and did a great job. He made up for work poorly done by another service provider. The cost is very reasonable and he is very easy to work with. He does a great job with follow up and communication. He is very honest and gives written estimates that he will stick to.

DFICOR CONSTRUCTION
They were here on June 1, and haven't been back since.  My bathroom is not finished, and I had to call an electrician to fix what they started.  It was a mess.  They come out about noon and stand around, eat lunch, and don't do a thing.  My kitchen is not finished, they have only laid tile.  My bathroom is not usable, and I have to go to my sister's to shower and bathe.  They did get my toilet finished so I could at least use it.  The job was supposed to be done 6/16/2012, it is no where close to being done, it was supposed to take 60 days.

FMcMillen Construction
He was an absolute disaster. I bought a porcelin tub and he drilled through it. He burned the shower heads out trying to soder them. I bought a medicine cabinet to install and he cut the new hole in the wall 4 inches too small. He was an absolute hack and did poor work. I finally was fed up and told him I wanted my $1000 back that I gave him after the downpayment of $2500. He has refused to give me the $1000.

We did the demo ourselves. Then Mr. Litt started the whole process and was so good at working with our people as certain plumbing and electrical maters had to be taken care of. It just worked so smoothly. We are so pleased with the whole process that we have already asked him to get an estimate for the upstairs bath and a walk-in closet remodel. We have before and after photos that we would be happy to share.

AGreg Johnson Small Job Specialist
I needed both of my bathroom floors fixed I called numerous remodelers, handymen, construction men and all gave me the same result either a no show at appointment or a no call back at all. Found Greg Johnson on this site and sent him a message explaining my problem expecting the same results. I received a message saying give me a call with his phone number attached. I called Mr. Johnson and we talked for a few moments he asked me how long will I be home. I told him I had an hour before I had to leave for work. He came to my house straight away looked at my floors we discussed a game plan and he began to put it in order. I needed a plumber and he found one and had him come over straight away and between the 2 they had one bathroom useable and the other ready for a remodel. In a weeks time I went from 2 almost unusable rooms to one usable and the other beginning remodel. Now the first is almost done and the results are spectacular and I cannot wait to see what they have in store for the other. Got Mr. Johnson's bill for the floor just $295 for the work he done and in the time he did it in spectacular. Will definitely work with him again and again until my whole house is fixed.

Mark and Tom were always on time and finished the project according to schedule. There were no problems and it was a real pleasure to work with them. Russ Construction is first class. Mark sticks to his estimate and there are no surprises. They leave the place clean afterwards.

AR & R Builders LLC
Our initial experience in 2010 was when Greg and his crew rescued us from another contractor who had purchased all the windows and materials to replace all our windows. Then he abadoned the project after installing one window. Almost a year later we were put in touch with Rand R Builders, LLC (Greg Rafeld). They had built a horse arena for our neighbor. Greg was able to determine that all the windows had been measured incorrectly and since we couldn't return any of them he and his crew figured out how to build out and make everything work beautifully. They did new construction on some windows including a very large picture window and installed all of our doors. The next project was a complete rebmodel on our downstairs bathroom. The replaced the sink, all of the fixtures and redid all of the walls and shower. This was a room I would not go in when we moved here. Now we love it and our son uses it as his own bathroom. They did a refresh on another shower in another bathroom and soon they will redo our masterbath. They have installed new flooring, in our laundry room, downstairs bath and hallway. We recommend them highly and have always found their prices to be fair. The most professional group we have worked with. On time and stay until the work is done to Greg's very high standards.
