Recent Review: My husband and I had been looking for someone to take a look at our chimney, which wasn't drawing and needed some attention--cleaning etc... We had asked around and had a name ofone other person in our area who did this but we never got a call back from them so I was happy to find Massena Chimney listed on Angie's List. Merle returned our call the same day and was able to come out the next day. He was friendly, professional, competent and knowledgable. My husband and I were very impressed with him and would recommend him enthusiastically.
Recent Review: The technician was on time, friendly and knew what he was doing. He was not able to inspect the outside of the chimney because there was frost on the roof. He cleaned up everything after he was done.
Was a good experience and would hire again. Did a very good job,was very good to talk to. The job was done in a very neat way no dust or dirt left after the cleaning.

CMid-York Chimney Sweep
He sounded great on the first phone contact, wanted to help me save money however he could. First visit was on time, but his proposals began lengthening and becoming more complicated (and expensive). He did say one chimney was clean and didn't work on it, which should have saved me money, but the furnace and hot water heater chimneys cost more than I expected. He did a thorough job and didn't make too much of a mess, but made an appointment to return because he said several furnace pipes in the basement needed replacing. He gave me an estimate for that after he had assessed what was needed. When he returned, he was two hours later than his appointment, and the bill was $125 over the estimate. (He also sells stovepipe.) When I protested, he took off a small amount. He also has a large estimate for the kitchen stove pipes, which he says need complete replacing, inside and out, down to the thimble and everything. (We recently upgraded the thimble, etc. to the insurance company's satisfaction.) Because I am a recent widow and my husband used to do all of that, I'm in a vulnerable position. Two of my male friends said that the pipe he left lying on the ground looks perfectly good. All in all, he did a professional job, but his helpful manner didn't make it past the first phone call. I will look for another chimney sweep, as I feel his original phone estimate of about 1/3 the actual bill (which did include the chimney he didn't touch) was not completely honest.

Jamie was very thorough, professional and knowledgeable. We hired him to just to do a clean but as we just moved into this home we decided to have the entire structure examined......glad we did. Highly recommended.

I am in contract to buy this house, and was concerned about the chimney and it's flues based on the home inspector's report. I called Jamie in to do a more detailed inspection and estimate. We started in the basement, where we inspected the cleanouts for the two flues. Jamie carefully determined the BTU ratings for the furnace and water heater. He seems knowledgeable in the area of furnace mechanics, codes and specifications. We then returned to the fireplace. Jamie did a careful (level 2) fireplace cleaning and chimney sweeping job. He seems careful and deliberate in his actions (a must when dealing with mounds of ash.) He did a camera inspection of the chimney. He left a clean fireplace and clean workspace. Finally, Jamie went up on the roof to examine the chimney and flues from that end. He examined the heating flue, the crown and the bricks and mortar. Jamie returned a careful and precise report on the conditions of the areas he was hired to inspect. He gave an estimate for the work he could do. Since there is some masonry work to be done, he gave several referrals for good masons to do the job. I was very happy with the experience, and plan to have Jamie as my chimney technician going forward. I did not give Jamie a grade on price because I have never hired a chimney sweep before, did not comparison shop, and have no idea whether his price was high, low or just right. Nonetheless, he spent about three hours there, has a truckload of equipement invested, and his bill was less than $100/hr, so how unreasonable could it be?
