I wasn’t as sold on this project as my husband, but we were using propane to heat our home in upstate NY and the cost had tripled in 10 years. We have a large home and we had to find a way to get the utilities under control or think about downsizing. (Heaven forbid 2 people live in something smaller!!!) My husband is good with figures and was able to convince me that the payments would at least be fixed and we would have it paid off in a reasonable amount of time. It would be hard to compare it to your payoff time because we had solar panels installed at the same time so we are pretty energy independent now. (In fact, the utility company paid us over $600 last year when all was totaled on the electric use. ) We’ve gone through two winters now with the geothermal heat and we haven’t had to use the back-up propane in either year. The only negative that I can express is that when it’s below zero outside my floors don’t warm up as nicely as they did with the propane in-floor heat. Halco warned us of that because the geo heats to 120and deg; instead of the higher temperature that the propane heated. Halco system and service before, during and after has been exceptional. The entire system, including the solar, could have been such a mess, but they were careful. They came back twice to regrade where the geo was drilled. I ordered beautiful cast bronze grates because I said if I was going to have holes in my floors again they would be good-looking. I told the project manager what I wasted and he handled ordering and installing them. (Because they were not in the original estimate, I had to pay for those out of pocket.) The lead installer has been to the house a few times because we have had problems with the upstairs heat. Part of that is because we didn't really understand the way the system works. We keep the upstairs heat down most of the winter because it is unused now that the kids are moved out. But when we do want to heat it we have to bump it up a few degrees at a time or else it turns on the boiler. He installed the newest and best thermostats to help us use the system more easily and there was no extra charge for them or his labor. One thing I do like is that the air-conditioning is gentle. I always hated the way air-conditioning is icy cold; tis isn’t. We seldom use it but when we do, it’s great.
