Recent Review: Now that it's over I would still go with 21st Century even though not everything went exactly as expected and would recommend them.  Contact with Sales department was excellent.  Contact with Installation department was okay.  Primary concern is that the location of the new pool was communicated three times and as late as the day prior to the install was still being positioned incorrectly.  This was critical to have it the correct distance from the existing house and deck.    Actual pool installation was quick and went as expected, very efficient and professional team.  A few issues did occur - Filling in the deep end of the old pool did not go as well as it could have.  Two comments - 21st did not properly anticipate the amount of fill required and needed to bring extra material in.  Not a big deal.  But after the install was complete and they left I've seen that they still did not add enough new material and have left a drainage issue that I now have to address with additional fill and expense.    Pool heater stopped working a few weeks after installation.  21st could not fix and the heater manufacturer serviced (for free under warranty).  I believe the ultimate issue was that it was not adjusted properly for an above ground installation with the heater and pool at the same ground level.  I think this points to 21st not understanding how to correctly install.  No harm done.    I got quotes from 3 other pool companies in the area.  21st was not the cheapest, they were in the middle (and I never received one of the quotes from another "big and long standing" company in the area but it would have been higher based on initial discussions and I never got a call back until 21st was already installing!).  21st's quote was far and away the fastest and most complete received.  2 of 4 companies (not 21st) did not even want to come to the house and look at the site before quoting.  21st was the only company willing to remove the old pool.  21st was the only company willing to quote replacing the deck from the old pool (ultimately went with someone else that they recommended and that went very well too).  21st was the only company that was forthcoming with estimating what different heater styles would cost to run long term.  They were far and away the most knowledgeable and forthcoming of the four companies which built their credibility.    One additional comment about all of the quotes was that no one, including 21st, would quote the cost for the electrical work for the pump and heater (ultimately $1100).  I guess because this is not a service that they offer so I sorta understand.  It did feel like a service that they should have included in the quote though.  After all, what good is a pump and heater if you can't turn them on?  But I got the impression that their goal is to quote as low an initial number as possible and hope to get you to commit to the install before you understand the total cost.  When the project is done I will likely have spent another $2000 - $3000 beyond the cost of the pool and heater (not including decking).  Lesson learned would be to do everything possible to understand EVERY expense that you are likely to encounter before embarking on a new pool install (and read the fine print on contracts!).    I think every company that I worked with is in the "pool" business and probably installs pools just fine.  I don't think any of them are "full service" when the request starts to get more involved (remove old pool, fill in the deep end, build a deck to replace the old pool deck, run electrical?) and this is where they start to make mistakes or just simply won't do the work.  21st was the closest I found to Full Service but I don't think our area actual has an "A" rated full service pool installer (at least for what I was looking for).  A solid "B" experience.  I expect any other choice I considered would have been a "C" at best.

Recent Review: One of four companies that I considered for a new 21 foot above ground pool.  Their quote was in the middle of the 3 received but only because I think they quoted the wrong heater (see below).  Fourth company was so slow to respond I never actually received a quote.  Showroom was great and staff were friendly and very responsive.  Quote was received the same day while we were there which was great.    Request was to remove an old existing pool and it's attached deck, install a new pool and heater and new attached deck.  Johnsons was quick with a quote for the pool and heater but was not interested in removing the old pool or in building a new deck.  They did offer names of some contractors that they have worked with before that could build the deck instead.  Did not really offer anything for removing the old pool.  I expect if I'd gone with them I would have had significant headaches getting rid of the old pool and getting the site graded appropriately without their involvement.    Quote did not include the cost of running a gas line to the heater, I guess because this is not a service they provide.  I think it should have been included.  What use is a heater if you can't turn it on?  Not including this in the quote was one way that they kept the overall quote low.    A second way that they kept the overall quote low was to quote a gas heater instead of an electric heater.  Much lower initial cost ($1200 gas vs. $2700 electric) but a simple internet search will show you that a gas heater will cost far more to operate over the lifetime of the pool.  Only one of the companies that I got quotes from offered this information up front and actually recommended a more expensive unit and proved with calculations that it was the right choice for the life of the pool.    If Johnsons had quoted the right heater and the cost of removing the old pool and grading the site I am certain they would have been the most expensive.  If I had gone with them it might have appeared cheaper at first but would have been the most expensive when all was said and done.

Recent Review: Heard that Charm pools might be a more economical choice for a new pool in the Binghamton area.  Asked to quote removing an existing pool and attached deck, install a new pool and heater and new attached deck.    Charm was quick with a quote for the pool and heater but did not offer to remove the old pool or to build a new deck, or provide the name of anyone that could.  They also did all of this in their showroom in Waverly and did not express any interest in coming to the site to see if there would be any issues (access, grading, tree roots - all actual issues with the install).  The also did not include the cost of running gas and electric lines to the heater in their quote.  I guess because this is not a service that they offer.  I think that it should be included.  What use is a heater if you can't turn it on?  They did not offer the name of anyone that could either.    Their quote was MUCH more economical than the other three that I received from somewhat more well known (and advertised) companies in the Binghamton area.  The pool was $1500 - $1900 less than competitive quotes.  The heater was on par.  No one would quote the cost of electric/gas lines.  Charm quoted a gas heater which is cheaper to buy up-front but more expensive to run over the life of the pool.  Only one company explained this (the internet explains pretty well too) and actually quoted a more expensive heater that would be cheaper to run.  This might be the only one Charm had or might have been a way to keep the quote lower.    Charm was the only company that offered to see if our existing pump and filter could be re-used to save us from buying a new system.  If we had gone with them this would have saved $750 more.  They were the only company that provided an itemized quote so that we could delete things we didn't want or need (like a ladder we already have).   Definitely the cheapest alternative we found.  But not a Full Service provider like we were looking for.  I think they are probably fine if you just want to install a pool in your backyard and don't want anything more than that.

Recent Review: O'Tooles Handyman has been wonderful to work with.  We were in a bind because of a contractor backing out on us at the last minute and we needed work done prior to an already scheduled kitchen installation.  O'Tooles stepped in and saved the day.  Not only did the save the day but they went above and beyond.  Unfortunately or fortunately however you want to look at it our hot water heater decided to go on the first morning the O'Tooles was here.  They graciously took on the task of replacing a hot water heater as well as fixing water damage around the window that they were installing.  They are very knowledgeable and willing to share the knowledge in order to save you money.  We have several more projects planned and fully intend on utilizing them as much as possible.

Recent Review: I was in   BIG   trouble!  Due to a leak in my roof that had gone unnoticed for years, the entire side wall of my house was in danger of crashing to the ground.  As Rob exposed the areas, it kept getting worse and worse than I had imagined. The rot was everywhere, and he discovered a lot of "sistering" from previous attempts to fix it. They were also rotten. Rob handled every aspect of this huge job with professionalism, determination, and sheer genius.  There was NO WAY he was going to let my house fall apart, and it is now better supported than when it was first built back in 1964.  I was really in a panic about it, but Rob's confidence was very calming.  He reassured me every inch of the way.  That was most appreciated. The supports he built were engineered specifically for the job.  Safety was definitely a concern.  Rob had to support one area before he could remove support from other areas.  It was incredible to watch him work.  As the job progressed towards completion, my smiles came more often.  What a relief to have the house repaired!   I am VERY happy with the result! This is the second of several projects that Rob has done for me.  I will be submitting more reports (all excellent) on Rob Severs and Picture Perfect Home Improvements.  Hire him with confidence and high expectations.  You will not be disappointed.

ACNY Handyman Inc
It was excellent! Everything installed works beautifully, and we are looking forward to another visit in a few weeks, to fix some of the remaining issues! David was polite, energetic, and got a lot done in the hours he worked for us.

APicture Perfect Home Improvements
Rob has been creative and resourceful in providing quality / reasonable solutions for a wide variety of home projects and not taking advantage of our parents when I live 6 hours away and only visit occaionally.  Rob even took my mom to visit my dad in the hospital at the end of a project day when I was unavailable. Rob has been very professional and gracious, easily available and adaptable to changing schedules. He also has been courteous, agreeable, responsive and patient with working with our often cantankerous, hard to please mother.
