Recent Review: Our house is over 100 years old and the paint had deteriorated badly. There was tons of loose, cracked and peeling paint. In many places all the paint was gone and bare wood was visible. Further, a prior owner had painted the brick work on the entrance way and chimney thereby washing out the chief architectural feature of the house.  Horizon put in a prompt and detailed bid for the work which included a step by step plan to deal with the peeling and cracked paint. The owner of Horizon, Mike Grillo was very helpful in picking out a color scheme. We gave him some ideas of the colors we liked and he put together a sample board with paint swatches in various combinations from the color group we liked best. This was very helpful in narrowing things down. We then bought a few quarts of the colors we liked and Mike painted some sample patcheso on the house so that we could se what it would really look like. I highly, highly recommend that you do this to make sure of your colors before its too late. It took a few tries but we eventually hit on the right colors. Painting the brick work and the old storm windows was labor intensive and far beyond what is typically needed for a paint job but Mike and his crew patiently took care of all the problems associated with painting bricks and in the end, the results were fantastic.  The only draw back was that there was lots and lots of rain this summer causing the start date to be pushed back over and over again and the rain continued once they started work to further delay things. The two man crew that did most of the work were professional, friendly and competent in their work.  What matters most are the results and though I may be biased, I think that my house went from being the shabbiest home in the neighborhood to being, hands down, the prettiest. I can't tell you how many people have stopped by to rave about how wonderful the house looks now.

Recent Review: I called for an estimate, and she was here within a week, and received the estimate within a week. I put off signing the contract until July 31, and was told that they had approximately 4 weeks of exterior painting scheduled before me. The weather was humid and rainy all through August. I called early September and was told 2.5 weeks of exterior painting ahead of me. I called early Oct, and was told about 1 week,(still bad weather, either cold or rain). In late October, maybe next week. The following Mon. 2 painters showed up to ask about colors. The next day they were there with the pressure washer, and working by 8:30 a.m. In actuality they had to put a second coat of paint on all the main surfaces. Except for an outside extension cord for the pressure washer, they brought all their own equipment. Two or three men showed up at a time, depending on how much work needed to be done, and the weather predictions. In the early morning they waited for the temperature to rise before they started painting, which often meant they were painting in the sunshine, and the western walls were completed last. They removed and replaced 2 wood piles (complete with concrete block edges). They moved the compost container. They cut down a couple of upstart trees, growing against the garage. They removed and replaced the structure holding the canoe. When I asked about the shed roof (which I had assumed was considered part of the shed, but found out it was a metal roof that needed special paint), that roof was complete within 24 hours. They arranged for the disposal of all the trees at no cost to me. They were friendly, professional, respectful and kept me informed of their plans for the next day. My only complaint was that they never initiated contact to give me updates on the expected start day. My friends and children were sure they were taking advantage of me and putting others before me. But if I counted the good weather days, I figured the estimates of time were very accurate. When the final bill came, it cost 10%less than the estimate because they had anticipated most of the problem areas. They did find one thing that had not been counted on and that was a rotten window frame on the lake side which had to be replaced. They told me to find my own window installer and when he was finished, they would come back to put finishing touches to the paint job, if necessary. In the beginning I was shocked at the price, but upon inquiry found that it was within normal range for professional painters. Afterward, I felt that I had gotten more than my money's worth.

Recent Review: Milton installed new hardscape around the trees in the backyard & the garage. He maintains the lawn weekly & does a great job with the lines in the grass & blows off the sidewalk & driveway for us as well! They also installed new carpet in the family room in the basement, installed porch railings on the front porch, painting the interior of the house for us with great ideas on colors & products especially with an allergy dog, he was very considerate of the smell & made sure all my dogs needs were addressed with the painting in the house. We also had the kitchen & laundry room ceramic tile completed by ABG Contracting, it turned out great! We are in love with it still! I look forward to having him complete our kitchen addition & roof in the spring! The designs for the landscaping exceeded my expectations & The guys were extremely polite, thorough and professional! I'd use them again in a heartbeat!! Competitive pricing & very quick to get the work complete if you are on a deadline! ABG Contracting was very prompt and courteous!

Recent Review: Everything about the job was communicated specifically at the beginning. From day one, it was clear to me that the guys cared a lot about doing the job right. They provided extensive references who had all good things to say about the guys, their work, and their professionalism. They also provided a thorough quote. They always showed up when they said they would. On the first day of the job, I changed my mind (I originally asked them to demo a large portion of the deck, and on day one when they showed up to do that work, I asked if we could just replace the skirting and stain it all). No problem, new quote was delivered and work started the next day. Partway through the job, as paint was being applied, it became apparent that there was an issue with lacquer on the wood. This was causing the new paint to bubble and blister. After trying multiple solutions, the crew actually had to remove all paint from the house. I was presented with an option of whether or not I wanted them to complete that level of work and a clear price for what the extra work would cost if I chose that route. I decided for guys that were committed to doing it right, I would take the plunge and see my house naked for a few days. The crew did so much more than scrape, sand (and sand, and sand) and paint. They replaced pieces of siding that were rotting, wood on the porch that was rotting, wood under the eaves that was rotting. They built new doors for my shed. They tightened up the deck and installed new skirting and installed new bolts where needed. The total job took about 13 days due to the extra level of work. The crew was awesome. Extremely professional, punctual, and hard-working. Jerome was always an e-mail, phone call, or text away. He even texted photos to show me the bubble/blister issue. Jerome and Buck came to the house tonight to wrap up the job personally and ensure that things were done to my satisfaction. I would hire these guys again in a heartbeat. Awesome work, awesome attitudes, awesome communication.

Mr. Woodring was rude, unprofessional and untrustworthy. He didn't honor our contract and didn't do any of the prep work, which was in the estimate. He decided that he wasn't going to finish the job by putting a second coat on the house, said he would "take it as a loss" and that we had "aesthetic differences". The attention to detail was non-existant. I had to pay professionals to fix the mess that he made of the exterior of my home.

He was very professional and did a very careful job.  He was particular about matching the paint color, was careful to cover plantings, steps etc.  There was absolutely no mess when the job was completed.  His crew was polite and hard working.  At a modest additional charge, he did some structural repairs.  The whole job was very well done.

APrime Painters (Steve Potter)
Steve did an excellent job pressure washing our house as well as scraping priming and painting our front door entry and storm door. He was on time promptly returned phone calls and did excellent quality work. Perhaps best of all he charges almost half of what other contractors quoted us for the same work. I highly recommend Steve for any interior or exterior painting or power washing.

FR & W Painting And Remodeling
IT'S AN ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE!  The work that was done was done poorly and incompletely.  I've had to fix & finish it myself.  The 2-3-man crew wouldn't work on Mondays, Fridays or weekends.  On the 3 days a week they did work they'd show up around 10am, put in 2 or 3 hours and leave.  They tore off my old gutters, didn't even haul they away and then left me with no gutters at all for a whole month during which it rained heavily, causing a damp basement and other problems.  When they did return to install the gutters they did a half-assed, unfinished job in which water now runs off the roof between the gutters and fascia.  For more than 3 months they've promised to come back and fix them, as well as finish all the other work, but have never shown up on the many occasions they said they would.  The remaining work, for which they received a sizeable down payment (to "cover materials") has never even been started.  They were paid in full for the painting and deck work even though thought it wasn't finished because they promised they'd do that along with everything else.  Big mistake! HOMEOWNERS BEWARE this father-and-son team of Roger (son) and Wendell Pike, sometimes doing business also as R&W Contracting or variations thereof, operating primarily in Schuyler, Yates, Steuben, Tompkins & Chemung counties (NY).  They are INEPT AND UNRELIABLE.  Do not hire these guys no matter what they say or how much money they promise to save you!  And if you're foolish enough to do it anyway, do not pay them much upfront or give them final payment until the work is finished and done 100% to your satisfaction.  And be sure they give you a valid, VERIFIABLE business address so you can take them to court later! Update 3/26/2014: Since my initial complaint I?ve found that the paint they applied to my deck (which was a top-quality brand) was put on incorrectly, resulting in significant peeling and erosion over the winter.  Wendell Pike contacted me in October, admitting that they hadn?t finished the work and promising yet again do so before the month?s end.  Once again, that didn?t happen.

FBrooks Painting
Owner talks a great game. Came out for the quote and talked about the quality of the work, gave references (checked out) and gave 3 quotes. 1 for basic, 1 for minor stripping and priming(+- 7K which ended up at over 9K), and 1 for a full strip (17.5K). I chose the second option, and when I found out that it only included 1 coat of paint, chose to pay additional $1000 for second coat. The home was being changed from white to sage/green, so I knew 1 coat would not do it... not sure why a quote would not include enough to actually paint the home. I went with his quote though it was the highest of the quotes I received, because I wanted the home done correctly, and was under the impression that he actually cared about the job he was to do. Though the quote had the repairs included, I was told any carpentry work would need to be outsourced and I would need to find someone. I did a lot myself, and hired a contractor for some. Brooks's 2 person crew later ended up doing some of the work as well, but charged extra for it. Some of the home was not power washed. Many areas have only 1 coat of paint, and white/gray primer is showing through. Areas that needed priming were not primed. They painted over mildew on balcony railings after being told 4 times that they should clean it and re-paint. Painted almost all of the windows closed, and did not move some windows to be sure they painted all of the surface area. The green is supposed to be 2 slightly different colors, darker on bottom siding and lighter on top siding... it is divided by decorative molding and 2 different kinds of siding. The paint was slopped on and there is no dividing line between the colors. They couldn't cut a straight line between white trim and green sides. 2 windows that were to be replacements for damaged ones were painted with 1 coat, not scraped or sanded, and then left out in the rain. Many pieces of trim/soffits/overhangs that needed replacement were not repaired. I asked about a dozen times for them to at least let me know if something needed replacement so I could at least do it or have someone else fix it, but was not notified.. they painted over rot or damage. The window glazing is coming off where replaced, and many areas that needed it were not done. Called them back to the home 3 times, on the third, the owner told me rudely that it would be the last. They did none of the items that I showed them on that day, so I decided that it was not worth the frustration to try to call them back to the home again. 6 months later, paint is peeling in some areas, glazing is coming off, and I am going to need to pay another painter to scrape all the places where they painted over the dust/paint chips that they had scraped and did not clean off the sills before they painted, and repaint a good portion of the home correctly. If you would like to pay top dollar for a low quality job, these guys fit the bill!

Everything was great, except it got cold and rainy before the painting could be completed. It was not the contractors fault.

FPrime Time Painting & Drywall
Despite the fact that the house they were working on was built in the early 1800's and so could be assumed to have lead paint, the painters working for Prime Time Painting & Drywall took no initial precautions to minimize the release of lead into the environment. They began by pressure washing the entire exterior of the house (a practice classified as "not recommended" by the Tompkins County Health Department), which dislodged loose paint and propelled the paint chips onto adjacent properties. Concerned by all the paint chips left lying on the ground in public areas bordering the work site, I tested some of them for lead using 3M LeadCheck test swabs. All turned bright pink, indicating that lead was present in the paint. I showed one of the painters what I had found, but while he admitted to their pressure washing causing the problem, he refused to make any effort to clean up the mess until several days later (at which point the lead paint chips had been lying on the ground for a full week). The cleanup effort, when at last it was made, consisted of removing a small amount of soil from around the house that had been covered in paint chips. However, paint chips left in other areas beyond the borders of the property they were repainting (the pressure washing propelled paint chips quite far from the house itself, onto adjacent properties) were left where they landed, and in subsequent days the additional removal of old paint from the house by scraping left still more lead paint chips on the ground, both on and beyond the property where Prime Time Painting & Drywall was working. Ultimately, I spent several hours picking up hundreds of lead paint chips myself, and countless more remain on the ground where they fell. Obviously it should not fall on a concerned neighbor to clean up the toxic debris left behind by an irresponsible contractor, but this is exactly what happened. Prime Time Painting & Drywall took little interest in remediating the health and environmental hazard they created through their unsafe removal of old lead paint (the #1 cause of lead poisoning in American children). Anyone living in a pre-1978 home, or who simply would like to see a safe and clean work site maintained on their property, should look elsewhere for a painting contractor.
