Recent Review: He and his son, John, work together and are general contractors. They also work separately. His wife is in real estate. He builds ducts and porches, plumbing and all. I use him whenever we need him. We have terribly hard water here; he had been replacing the element every 3 months. Our water heater burns out every 2 to 3 years, so he is usually the one who replaces that. He went picked up the water heater and brought it back to me. He then fixed the water heater. He charged at an hourly rate. I would rate him highly. I will use his service in the future.

Recent Review: Our furnace kept kicking off in the night, hitting the reset button worked but we were warned that eventually it wouldn't work (it would wear it out). So, since we were investigating zoning the home we felt we better get this issue resolved first. Paul was a great guy, gave us a thorough estimate for new furnace and oil tank. We got about 5 quotes as we were told we needed to replace radiators to be more efficient, then others said no, don't do that. Several said to replace oil furnace and tank. A couple tried to fix issue with no success. Collis' quote was more than we wished to spend on a 200 year old home; I'm sure the work would have been done well but we weren't convinced that we needed a $3,000 oil tank. We finally found a guy that said we didn't need to replace anything but a transformer - and the heat has been running ever since! Since there are no leaks on the tank, just rust, we decided to wait on that; all is working well so don't want to mess with it!

They were Ok during the 70's and 80's. It became a nightmare in the 90's to present. I will be switching to a new provider. They have become too big to care about long time good customers. I have a lot more details to prove how bad my experience was with this company but there's not enough room here.

AThermo Heating and Air Conditioning Company, Inc.
I called on behalf of my 94 year old father whose furnance was not working. We were experiencing subzero temp at the time so it was a critical situation. I called Thermo and had an immediate response. My father said they showed up, looked the situation over, went out to get a replacement part and rectified the problem. This is not our first experience with Thermo. Just this past November we had a hot water tank fail and they were right there to replace it. They are professional and trustworthy. It is so refreshing to find a business and people who really care about their clients. I can not praise Thermo enough and would recommend them without reservation to anyone. Thank you Mark, Louie and all your great employees!

We have had Frank service our furnace since we bought this home in Dec 2009 - Frank is great! We had issues with the furnace early on, the previous owners did not tell us about how it kept shutting off and had to be reset. Frank came the day we called - he cleaned the furnace and adjusted it. It ran for a day or so and shut down again, he came again and said he'd like to replace a part and see if that worked - if it didn't he wouldn't charge us, he'd swap the parts back and try something else. It was the transformer (I think) and it worked just fine, he dropped by again to double check everything - and all three visits including cleaning and parts was about $200 - and I was very happy with service and price. He is very knowledgeable (we had a few service people in giving us quotes on replacement before we found Frank - they all were happy to say we needed a new oil furnace and oil tank! Most of them were completely unfamiliar with the brand of furnace we had). Frank had worked on similar models before and easily named the two or three things that could be wrong - and suggested we start with the most obvious and least expensive part first. Frank is a very honest guy who didn't try to sell me thousands of dollars of new equipment, as most other companies did. I wouldn't even think of calling anyone else!

AKalex Energy, Co
I've done endless amounts of work over the last dozen years remodeling two old homes. Kalex is easily in the top three of all the companies I have hired over the years. I couldn't be more satisfied with their work. Not only has it saved me money, but the workers were thorough, clean, friendly, and professional. First of all, everyone should get an energy audit done; not just to save money in energy costs, but also because the State currently subsidizes it. (Thank you, Taxpayers!) Kalex performed this audit for me, and then recommended changes and upgrades. As a person very knowledgeable about home improvement, I knew that Kalex made only the most cost efficient recommendations. They did not try to sell me on unnecesary upgrades with little-to-no short-term cost benefit. So, I could tell from the start that this company was more honest than most. This is probably the biggest job I've ever hired out, and therefore I was initially shocked at the proposed price. However, the low-interest, 15-year financing in relation to the proposed savings in annual energy costs made it a no-brainer to sign on the dotted line. Specifically, I am scheduled to save twice as much in annual energy costs as I have to pay each year on my financing plan through NYSERDA . In other words, their work immediately saved me money, as opposed to paying now, in the hopes of saving in the future. I'm saving significant amounts of money each month (on average), even after paying my monthly financing bill! So, it didn't cost me money...it only saved me money. Hence, a "no brainer." Jumping ahead to the work completion, I am currently running my air-conditioner only about 1/4 of the time I ran it last summer. I often can't believe how cool my upstairs remains, without air conditioning, with the midday summer sun beaming down on the roof just above it. (In a Cape Cod, I have no attic to absorb that heat.) I can easily see this winter being cheaper with less heat loss, and by switching from high cost heating oil to cheaper natural gas. Basically, Kalex's work is living up to its promises. As for the quality of the work and the workers...FANTASTIC. Let me explain: 1) My wife is a stay-at-home-mom, and is always very nervous about having men work in the house while I'm at work. As is typical, I had to take a day off from work, and my mother-in-law had to come down a couple of times, too. However, after my wife finally met and spoke to each worker (there were 7-8 of them), she no longer felt the need for us to be around. The men were professional, and true gentlemen. This put all of us at ease, most notably the wife (which is no small achievement, I assure you). 2) The workers were very neat. Our home is also my wife's workplace. When it gets in disarray by others, this adds work and stress for her (and we ALL suffer!). Kalex workers covered floors, contained dust/debris, and removed their shoes when crossing through the house. They left no sign or trace of their work at the end of each day. I loved coming home to see only progress, and not headaches. 3) A lot of this work is outside the view of the typical homeowner. Knowing this, and being a hands-on guy, I checked all of their work, even in the tightest and hardest-to-reach areas. To my surprise, these guys NEVER took a short-cut. Most notably, the job on my house took about three days longer than they expected (for a total of 8 days), so the company was quickly losing money on this unexpected labor. This is usually when crews take shortcuts, in an effort to save money. Not Kalex. Not only did they continue to cover every spot, but they went above and beyond (like repair-patching a few small tears on my old porch roof, which was no fault of theirs. These guys worked like bulls, often working in the most miserable conditions! While I couldn't be happier, I just hope Kalex-corporate pays their workers handsomely, BECAUSE THEY DESERVE IT! Well, that's all. We couldn't be happier. If you've read this far, and this seems too-good-to-be-true....it should! My wife and I are so pleased, that we told Kalex we were going to write the best review ever. They really deserve all of the praise. As final proof of our satisfaction, my wife and I actually started buying the guys lunch every day, out of our own pockets! We were so happy, we were willing to spend MORE on these guys, to show our appreciation. Well done, Kalex. And THANK YOU!!

I have been living with a hot water slab leak for over two years, turning the cold water intake off at the hot water tank when the hot water was not in use. My delay in getting it repaired was due to budget constraints, but it was also due to lack of responsiveness and interest from the handful of other area plumbers I had out to give me advice. It seemed that the first thing anyone wanted to do was dig up the slab to attempt to find and then patch the leak (no way!!) or run the pipes through the attic where they'd undoubtedly freeze. When I discovered the drain line running into the slab from the washing machine was also broken, I knew that it was time to bite the bullet and get something done. I looked on Angie's List and found RFC Contracting had positive reviews, so I decided to give them a call hoping to find a more creative solution. Bob came out the next day to have a look, told me what he thought could be done, had an estimate to me by that evening, and the work was done within a few weeks to my specifications. (It would have been done sooner if my schedule and pocketbook had permitted. On a side note, before I was ready for them to start the big job, they came out to replace a faulty drain pipe running from the bathtub---this cost me $250 and was worth every penny. That had been leaking too unbeknownst to me.) The day that they started rerouting the lines, Bob and Art and Kris each separately called me on the phone at work to keep me updated on the status and to relate their exact plans. It took two days for them to get the work completed. In the end, the hot water lines had been rerouted to the kitchen sink, bathtub, and bathroom sink; this was done by running PEX pipes flush to the ceiling, through walls, and even around one doorway. This was accomplished with very minimal drilling through the drywall. The drain line in the kitchen/laundry room was replaced with PVC pipe and rerouted through a nearby external wall to the sewer line in my back yard. (Genius!) All of the work was done neatly and at a fair price---all involved were polite and prompt and professional from start to finish. Needless to say, I am very pleased, and I would not think of hiring another plumber for any job big or small after my experience with RFC Contracting. Major kudos.
