Recent Review: Arcbazar offers a very unique service. I was looking for some interior design ideas for a new home. There are many interior designer's that offer consultation services. They provide color options, ideas for furniture etc. Whats cool about arcbazar, however, is that it works based on a competition that you create on their website. Instead of getting one designer providing you one concept, you get multiple submissions from different interior designers. I created a competition to provide interior design ideas for  my family room/kitchen area. I ended up getting 13 different design ideas. What I was impressed with was the quality of some of the submissions. Many of the designers submitted full color 3 dimensional layouts that made it a lot easier to visualize the design. They also provided a list of furniture, paint and accessory options. Overall I was very pleased with the results. Just be aware that you have to be reasonable about your award amount. You cant enter something like $50 and ask for a full interior design of your whole house. When creating your competition the website will give you a suggested award amount. This suggested award is based on the square feet of the area you wish to design. My only gripe with the service was their website. It's a bit rough around the edges and at times their site was very slow. Sometimes it could be frustrating to use. The only reason I didnt give the service all A's.

Recent Review: Over the course of 2 years restoring the interior of our house, we dealt with many professionals. Bud Moore is the only one I can recommend without hesitation. It was a severely stressful time in our lives, and Bud was always extremely responsive, friendly, and truthful. He gave us hope there was actually a light at the end of the tunnel. When he said he would be at the house, he was there. I am an interior designer by trade, and had a very particular vision and standards when it came to how I wanted the home to look. Bud was patient and truly made the effort to understand and collaborate, and as a result exceeded my expectations. I love my home! The attention to detail was excellent, and he will still come to the house to correct any minor punch list items that occur. His subcontractors were all very friendly and respectful as well. This was Part I of a major renovation, and we will without a doubt be hiring him for Part 2. Of all the awful people we dealt with, I am so thankful that we chose the absolute correct contractor for our job, because in the end, he is the most important person on the job. I shudder to think, and know it is true, that we would still not be back in our house if we had chosen another contractor.

Recent Review: Denise helped us considerably in paint choice for our living room-dining room. She also worked with us on developing a good plan for furniture, one that combined some furniture that we already had and inexpensive, good quality furniture that she helped us find (that was our preference; she also can work with more expensive furniture options). Part of this included a scale floor plan for the new arrangement and list of possible furniture pieces for that plan. She also gave us excellent options (and offered feedback on things we'd found) for wall decorations, lighting, window treatments, and carpet for our living room. She was professional, attentive to our wishes, and helped us create a wonderful look that we'd never have found without her help. Denise is easy to work with, always prompt in her response to our queries, and has a true gift for interior design. When spending this money on paint, furniture, carpet, window treatments, etc., it was a great investment to have her help in making decisions that we are really happy with.

ADown Under Faux
I took advantage of Angie's List's 'Big Deal' offering to have an interior design consulation with Muriel Norman from 'Down Under Faux'. The timing of the offer was perfect because we were getting ready to paint the interior of our house and do possibly do some renovation. Everything went perfectly from the initial purchase of the deal to the consultation itself. Muriel responded right away to set up a time for the consultation and asked about what we were planning so she could help us the most. She arrived on time and was prepared with paint wheels/chips to help with me with my color selection. Muriel provided creative suggestions to any and all of my design questions and concerns. She is very warm, friendly and funny. Muriel is very easy going and makes you feel very comfortable. After talking with her for a short time I felt like I had know her much longer. I also had the pleasure and opportunity of seeing some of Muriel's faux finish portfolio which is spectacular. She is a true faux artist. Should you have a need for interior design and/or faux finishing, do call Muriel Norman of 'Down Under Faux'. You will be glad you did!

They are terrific! This isn't the first time we've used them. They come right out with all of their samples, and always have much better ideas than I do! Kristen Smith was our designer, and her suggestions took our apartment from having a cold, industrial feel to being far more warm and personal. That's the kind of outfit they are!

Tim Lewis is an extremely quality-oriented craftsman. Very "persnickity." Tim Lewis keeps his work area neat and organized and, at the end of the day does a good clean-up so as to make living with the remodeling in progress as minimally invasive as possible. I would give Tim Lewis repeat business without hesitation.

AInterior Analysis
We had bought a newly-built  house a few years ago and had completed everything except the master bedroom/bath suite.  The entire space was 60' x 20' and we had no idea what to do with it.  We had several interior designers and an architect come and give us suggestions, but we weren't happy with any of them.  We then took advantage of Allan's $100 consultation and in the first 15 minutes he had already given us more original ideas than all the other consultants combined. Once we decided on a plan and a budget, Allan went with me to pick out flooring, tile and other building materials; he also went with my wife to choose fixtures, wall coverings, paint, etc.  During construction Allan visited often and interacted with the contractors, ensuring that they were performing quality work. Allan has a unique (at least, for me) way of looking at empty space.  We were so concerned about not breaking the space up so that it looked forced and also not leaving it so wide-open where we would have to buy a lot of furniture.  In the end, the areas flow together naturally, there is lots of space but not really empty space, both rooms are very functional, and we didn't have to buy any furniture. Allan kept us completely within budget, and in fact, what we saved in materials and fixtures (Allan knows where to buy things!) probably came close to his consulting fee.  All in all, we are completed satisfied with his work and would recommend him highly.  We will work with him next year on redesigning our living room and kitchen areas.

AHome Improvements & Repairs by John Gasparro
After some confusion between the various people involved with the foundation, we were finally ?out of the dirt? and could start building upwards, with wood. This was never a straight forward type of addition, because it had to match within limits, an existing structure that was built in the mid-1700s. As you can guess nothing was straight, plumb or level. But, John was able to put up our 2 story addition so that it looks like it?s been there all along. One thing that we really appreciated about John was his ability to work with us and come up with some great design ideas so that the addition wouldn?t look new. One example is the addition of rough cut hemlock beams, which were cut and trimmed so that it looks like an extension to our barn. He even included hand carved pegs, of course inserted unevenly, to match the barn. His attention to detail is amazingly good.   This summer, July 2011, was one of the hottest on record. But, John worked through it all. At times I wanted him to stop, but he assured that he was taking breaks and cooling down quite often. In this heat he was able to put on the new roof and also repair our chimney which was in very bad need of help.   I have done carpentry work, unprofessionally, so I understand how it all goes together. I can say, without hesitation, that the construction of this addition is top notch in every aspect. We are extremely satisfied with John?s work and plan to stay in touch with him on future projects.

AHome Improvements & Repairs by John Gasparro
We were very pleased with the high quality of John's work from beginning to completion of the renovation of our master bathroom.  He is very professional and reliable in every aspect of his work.  We are delighted with our newly renovated master bathroom! John prepared a clear and detailed contract which he drew up based on what we wanted in our new bathroom.  This contract included the work to be done as well as the cost of each aspect of the project.  We knew from the start exactly what we were paying for; we paid for the project in four installments.  Our renovation was worth every penny we paid for it!  John was easy to talk with and a good collaborator.  We felt comfortable having him in our home. John had spoken with us about his extensive background and experience in interior design and building so we trusted his suggested choices regarding color for tiles, vanity, paint, etc..  He brought us samples of shower tile, floor tile and wall paint to choose from.  This saved us a lot of time and we were not disappointed! It became clear to us that renovating our master bathroom wasn't just a job for John; it was a work of art.  He's obviously proud of his work and rightly so!  We're amazed at John's skill and expertise in so many crafts: carpentry, plumbing, electrical, tiling and painting. We really appreciated the way John worked; he was meticulous, efficient, hard-working and very neat.  For example, he used our garage as a work area for cutting and sawing; at the end of the project he cleaned up so well that our garage has never been cleaner!  Using the garage, as well as outdoors when weather permitted, kept the dust in the house to a minimum. John finished the renovation of our master bathroom in the estimated time and within budget.  We couldn't be happier with the final results!  We feel so fortunate to have found John Gasparro on Angie's List.  We highly recommend John for any bathroom renovation you may be planning!

AHome Improvements & Repairs by John Gasparro
Thanks to Angie's List, it's not hard to find a good contractor these days. John goes beyond a "good contractor". He's an amazing contractor. He's the person I will measure all future contractor interactions with. Not only is he very skilled at the raw building process and more specialized aspects (electric, plumbing, etc.), he is an amazing designer and can incorporate your wants into a fabulous space. He can also neatly solve a dispute between two spouses over what to choose, which I will describe below :-) We had recently purchased a house in the Red Hook area. It had good "bones" but the previous owners and builders had cheated a bit on the finishing. One part that was both disappointing and a little bizarre was the master bathroom. It had a hideous peach-colored shower unit and shallow tub. The space was decently sized but not used well at all; most of it was taken up by a very wide (one foot longer than standard!) custom vanity. The bathroom sat in a corner of the bedroom, which took on a strange L shape with a tiny hallway leading to a window behind the bathroom (the small part of the "L"), with two tiny closets near the window and a huge walk-in closet near the rest of the bedroom. It needed to change. John came in and took a look and some measurements. My spouse and I had the idea of knocking down the small part of the "L" and extending the bathroom back to the aforementioned small leg of the "L". He said that was a good idea but with our plan it would require moving the door to the walk-in closet (which we wanted to keep), which would add quite a lot to the price. He recommended instead keeping most of the plan, but putting a small alcove so we could keep the WIC door where it was, a significant cost savings. Aside from the very basic plan above and some other wants (jetted tub, tiled shower unit), my spouse and I had not really thought about the details of the bathroom. John, however, has an amazing flare for design. He took our basic ideas and rough budget turned them into detailed architectural plans and interior design. He was able to incorporate some already-existing features of the house (a window at the end of the L-shaped hallway and small closet there became a space to put the tub where you could see out into the distance) into a beautiful final product. His prices were very reasonable and fair, and I'm more than happy in that regard. We agreed on the plans and work started. When contracting with John it's not like hiring one of the larger outfits -- you get John and his associate Bob from start to finish, and they do one job at a time. I was a little nervous about this at first because usually the larger outfits will bring in specialized people for plumbing and electricity, but John does both of these himself and I found myself preferring it this way. It was a lot better than with a larger outfit because you know they'll actually finish the job! Everything went extremely smooth. They were skilled and efficient and respected the house and ourselves (I work from home). I can't describe it in much more detail than that because nothing ever really went wrong. It was just...smooth. John's experience and skills proved extremely valuable throughout the process. There was one time when our old hot water heater gave up the ghost . My spouse and I weren't sure what was going on but John immediately diagnosed the issue when he came into work that morning and recommended to us a great plumbing company who were able to come in and deal with the problem. Thanks John! We owe you one for that. I will describe one amusing interaction that I think highlights John's great design sense. My spouse and I were trying to decide on a tile for matching some other unrelated piece of the job. The two of us absolutely could not come to an agreement. So we asked John. He took a look at what we were trying to match and the tiles we couldn't agree on and said "I think I know just the thing." The next day he came in with a sample tile that both my spouse and I agreed matched perfectly.

AThe Renaissance of New Paltz
Well now they are finishing my home in Kingston and its coming along like a masterpiece! I mean WOW! I don't think there is anything like it anywhere in the world and I mean that. They said they would put it up on their website when its finished. (about 6 weeks) so its going great, and as for details there are way to many, but they're all good As for the Don'ts - Just tell them what you THINK you want, then let them design it and let them go!!! let them design it for you, they don't charge you for it, they are truly professionals with very tasteful visions, they're artisans. go to their store, see for yourself and have an amazing coffee that's free too :}
