Reviews in Amherst for Building a Gazebo

DFresh Start Property Improvement
Very well at first. Came to the house, looked the job over and gave me a verbal price. Said they would be back in a few days with a formal written quote. Never showed. After several calls were made, they finally showed up with their quote. I asked about other work at that time; they said they wanted the job, but never came back with a quote. Called two other handymen. Both wanted the job; both gave written quotes the very next day. Their quotes, unlike Fresh Start, were complete, including a list of materials to be used. They were both using the same materials and stain Fresh Start said they would be using. The other quotes said they would be putting on a minimum of two coats of stain; Fresh Start’s quote merely said, “re-stain gazebo.” Both of the other quotes were over $1,000 less than Fresh Start.

ACustom Builders
My wife and I hired Derek from Custom Builders in Hamburg to build a 24 by 15 deck and attached 10 by 10 gazebo. To say Derek is a master craftsman would be an understatement! I cannot find one thing to complain about or that we are disappointed about. Some people might complain that seven weeks for this project was too long, but not if you know and understand the quality of work that went into this job. Everyone including the contractor we hired to do the concrete patio loves his work. Our concrete guy even tried to hire him to frame a house for him this year after seeing his work. Derek is very patient and very particular. He made adjustments and changes along the way that he felt would be better and give a better overall appearance. All along he kept us informed and stayed right within budget. He listened to our long list of changes as well and rolled along with us helping us to craft a beautiful deck and gazebo design. The construction is top notched. No one we called for estimates, built to the sturdy specs Derek quoted. All posts are 6 by 6, everyone else was doing 4 by 4. The ledger board was 2 by 12; one contractor told me he did not even use a ledger board. Most guys were using a 2 by 10 ledger. Even our town inspector said this guy builds a strong quality deck. Derek himself was on the job each and every day. Occasionally he had someone there to help him, but he was always on the job. No sub-contracting here. All lumber was visually inspected and lumber that did not meet his strict standard was set aside and picked up by the lumber yard the next day. He cleaned the work site at the end of every night, and completely packed up and was out of the way for weekends. He worked with our concrete patio guy placing crush stone underneath the new deck stairs for the concrete guy. This should not have been part of his job. When the final construction was finished the overall price was probably a little higher than the next quoted estimate, but the quoted framing was of lesser value as well. I do agree that the other contractors were building to code, but Derek built to the customer! I cannot be more pleased with the complete job, Quality, finish, and price! Thank you Derek from both my wife and I and we will surely be calling you for other projects.

AFOX'S LAWN FURNITURE
It's very good except for one small problem. The oak had popped off from the body of the bolt and I think it was because it was under stress or tension. I did bring it to their attention, but they haven't repaired it so far. It's not a big deal. It shouldn't be repaired and it's not going to fall down because of it. It would probably cost them $50 or something to replace it. They haven't done anything about it so far, but it hasn't affected the usability of the gazebo either. It's one of the 200 bolts that are used to put everything together. Their price was fair. It's a minor thing, but their quality and responsiveness has fallen down a little bit. They were right on time. Their professionalism was very good.

AA+ Contractors of WNY LLC
A+ finished within the time frame written on the contract. We were definitely fighting the elements to finish on time. The men were polite and professional. If I had one criticism it would be that I wasn't told what time or when they would return. Now that I know how reliable they are, I can deal with that, but it was initially unsettling.

ARestorff's Landscape Service
I cannot say enough good things about this contractor. He is knowledgeable, organized, guarantees his work for two years, and has excellant employees working for him who were neat and polite and able to carry on unsupervised when he was struck down by swine flu during most of our reconstruction. He has the right kinds and sizes of equipment for doing jobs and keeping yard damage to a minimum. He accommodated other contractors that needed to be involved for our project even though it meant relaying pavers that were uplifted to install posts for a gazebo.

ARestorff's Landscape Service
This is the 3rd time we have had Restorff's to do hardscape and landscape work in our yard and we still have nothing but good things to say about his business and the results we get. Things may not happen with him as quickly as the impatient may like, but if you relax and just let him run the show, you won't be disappointed. It's probably also a good idea to get on his schedule before March if you can.
