Business Description: I am fully insured. I do not have any employees, I have 2 sub contractors that I have access to that I hire to work along side of me if I need more manpower for the job. My billing procedures are as follows; for small jobs I require 2/3 of the total contract down to have the job scheduled and then the final 1/3 due upon completion of the job. For long jobs a payment schedule would be set up and followed for billing. I will also work at a time and material basis for really small jobs. Promotions that I would offer would be only on window replacements and they would be promotions that I would receive from the window supplier and I would just pass those along; they change month to month.

DDD Construction
While Darren seemed like a good person and had good ideas and suggestions, the workmanship was poor. We finally ended up letting him go - he was more than 80% over budget (he only charges for labor; you purchase the supplies) and had only completed about 70% of the job. Subway tile that he installed is not level, and he didn't cap the cut ends or use bullnose tiles for the edges, so they are uneven and the cut edges are exposed, which means water will be absorbed. He topped the shower with unfinished wood, which will absorb water. The grout between the subway tile was cracking within days of being installed. He ruined the shower floor tile because it should have been sealed before he grouted it, so the grout stained it permanently. The shower door supports are not straight, so the door sags, which will most likely cause problems down the road. He used DAP instead of grout on the bathroom floor tile, which is not the appropriate product, and then dripped it all over the carpet outside the bedroom, permanently staining it. New toilet did not stop running (we fixed that) and pipes are now banging in the walls every time toilets flush or water runs anywhere in the house. There were drywall screws all over the driveway, causing a tire puncture, and the crew threw mortar or grout water, not sure which, off the side of my deck onto flower beds, which hardened when it dried. Not sure what will happen there once the growing season starts. Even his drywall seams are awful - we have to redo that as well. Overall, the mistakes were piling up and it became too much, so I told him I couldn't let him continue. He didn't offer to fix the mistakes, he didn't over any money back. He just left - left us with an incomplete and unusable bathroom (cabinets weren't installed, sink wasn't installed, windows still need to be replaced, tile wasn't finished or sealed so shower can't be used). We've had several other contractors in to get finishing bids, and each time we let them walk in and tell us what they saw, without telling them anything ahead of time. Every one of them has said he did horrible work and that we were cheated. It's very disheartening to know that we will be basically paying for this bathroom remodel twice, and the contractor just didn't care enough to offer remedy.

AHilltown Carpentry
My father was the one who located Bob King, owner of Hilltown Carpentry. for me.  My Dad, never one to be shy, went knocking door to door in my community asking neighbors if they had any recommendations for  carpenters or remodelers. I was new to the area and didn't want to just grab a name from an ad and didn't know about Angie's list yet. Everyone gave the same name with excellent references-Bob King.  He performed the best work I have ever had done. I own several rental properties in another state and have had my fair share of greedy, incompetent general contractors. This man can do it all. He is  very nice and professional AND humble.  Not sure how he stays in business with as little as he charged but I'm sure he has a big client base. Also, his carpentry work is unbelievable.

FScott's Plumbing
Boy, I have to tell you, I was so looking forward to a good experience but it became my worst nightmare. He bailed on me. I have an upstairs bathroom with a few issues, the original plumbing was done poorly, but all I wanted was the toilet drain moved back 12" and the shower base drain moved a couple of inches. Since this was such a small job I figured I'd throw in the replacement installation of a corner shower as kind of an easy bonus. After planning this for a couple of months, he set aside two days to do the work. On day one, he investigates a little more and notices the pitch of the drain line is poor, there "may" be a 90 degree angle which would allow for poor drainage well outside the bathroom. Of course, at $65 an hour, I'm figuring two days work for a total of $1,040. I would do all the other work, mind you, he just does the drains and shower (which includes the plumbing of the shower). He says he now wants to tear up the flooring into the other room to "investigate" whether there is a 90 degree angle on the drain pipe and he may be able to improve the drain pitch. MAY be able. His estimate was $3,500 to $4,500. Oh, yeah: He also charges an hour of labor to drive to my home. Look, I'm sure he was correct in his assessment about the pitch because I saw the pipe pitch on a level. I'm sure he would have done things correctly, meticulously so, but to tear up half of a floor in two rooms for a "maybe" is ridiculous. He knew this was a big decision and wanted me to think about it and get back to him. I wrote him a check for $210, two hours of work, about 90 minutes I think, plus this "drive-time". IN 15 YEARS OF DAILY USE I'VE HAD CLOG ISSUES WITH THAT BATHROOM MAYBE THREE TIMES. I called him the next day, told him no to the $4K but yes to our original plan. He said he'd call me back that night. He didn't. I called the next day, left a message, no call back. I called the next day, got ahold of him and he said "I don't feel comfortable with the situation. Sorry". I've been around a long time and I don't buy the "perfectionist" stuff. Now, I'm sure he'd do a good job but taking $210 and then telling the customer to stuff it is as unprofessional as it gets. He's busy, has lot's of work but I guarantee you, 100%, if he weren't busy he would have completed the job. Remember, if I had agreed to the $4,500 job, a job he wasn't sure would have been perfect either, he had no problem completing that job. At $1,000 he wouldn't have lowered his standards. However, at $4,500, not so much an issue.

AREFF DEVELOPMENT INC
We are absolutely pleased. Work began precisely when Mark Reff said it would. Everyone was courteous and professional. Clean-up was very good. And the quality of the work done (old house, odd corners, logistical nightmares) was of the highest quality. The price was very reasonable and the bill was precisely itemized. Mark and his crew are the only people we would consider for future work.

FMiddletown Plumbing & Heating
Shawn Abrams is a complete scam artist. He is not licensed in the state of N.Y to be a plumber or general contractor. He claims to own Middletown Plumbing and heating and S&K plumbing and he does not.He started working on my house and never finished. Consumer affairs is aware of him and is now taking action against him. I have also personally started the small claims case process against him. There are many judgements against him already.I have also contacted the news. His good yelp reviews are fake as they are written by him, and friends. Beware of this scam artist, check with the state to see if he his licensed for yourself. His best bet would be to return the money to lighten the impact the judge is going to sentence to him as this is not his first time.
