I'm sure there must be are other Landscape companies that would do satisfactory work, but my solo experience in this area is with Absolute Landscaping. Trying to pick a contractor solely from the yellow pages proved to be daunting, as all the adds say, "We do it all, and/or we're the best." I narrowed down my choice by by the simple expedient of picking the first Ad I saw in the Yellow Page Listings. (Absolute begins with an "A"). During my initial call to the General Manager, Ralph Weber, I discovered they are located in Carson City, 30 miles South of Reno. Ralph assured me that I lived well within their normal business area, and it would not pose any problem. The first thing that made a positive impression was that Ralph called when he said he would, kept every appointment, as scheduled, on time, even a little early. I never had to wait or wonder if and when I would hear from him, or when he would show up for an appointment. If he had failed to do this, and I had to chase after him, make several phone calls to find him, it would have been over before it started. I have cancelled work with other contractors (Painters are the worst), because they don't call or keep appointments. The first rule of business, "call the customer, keep your appointments, call if you have to cancel." This put me and my wife at ease, along with the fact that he was pleasant and easy to work with. Over a few visits, we developed an agreeable plan, and Ralph presented a few computer-generated sketches from which we developed the initial plan and bid. He gave us an approximate start date, and as the time to start neared, he called us and gave us an exact start date and general outline of the work to be done. They arrived promptly at 8:00 AM on the start date and began preparations immediately. Kevin, the Project Foreman, introduced himself, and we had a general discussion about the work. I asked a lot of questions and proposed some "What if" and "could you possibly do" to which he was responsive and amenable. I was briefed and updated each morning on the days work, and as the work progressed, we made some changes and additions which had a minimal impact on the original bidding price. I incorporated some last minute additions which required that Kevin return in a few weeks which he was willing to do without any coaxing from me. Ralph called back right away with the additional cost, which was very reasonable. They arrived on time each day, the work progressed steadily, was done on time and looks great! There were no surprises, no delays. They did what we asked them to do, agreeably incorporated changes. They did what they said they would do, when they said they would, on time, without a hitch. My overall impression was that everyone was focused, and customer-oriented. Time was that this was how all business was conducted. Now it seems sometimes the exception rather than the rule. Nowadays good work deserves special mention. I suppose I might have gotten the work done for less if I had started with a competitive bid situation. My first impression was of such a positive nature, that I decided just to go with Absolute. Though the bid was within my budget, my first concern was that I get what I pay for, that the work would be done right. I believe that I got my money's worth. Good service is not a matter of money, it's an attitude. Absolute gets another "A" for attitude. The contrast of the before and after is so drastic, that when I look at my front yard, it almost seems surreal. After looking at the old yard for 20 years, it's going to take a while longer for my brain to adjust to the new look. THAT is exactly what I wanted.
