Recent Review: High Country Gardens has a fine catalog with great pics and information. It's web site is even better. I have a problem from time to time with deer so I need to purchase "deer resistant" plants and flowers. High Country Gardens has a legend that provides you info whether the plants are hardy and deer or rabbit resistant, etc. I ordered some plants to fill in where needed. There is Golden Fleece, Lavender (Silver Frost), Yarrow (coronation gold), Coreopis, Chrysanthemum (snow cap), Rudbeckia, and Daffodils for Spring of course. The plants come very safely packaged and healthy. They also provide you a "planting guide" which is very helpful. They also have a 90 day guarantee. The best thing is the fact that the plants and flowers in my garden are not the same old same old from the local nurseries. I highly recommend this company.

Recent Review: Karen is an experienced landscaper, knows which plants will do well in particular locations in a yard and has the know how to carry out the plan. She worked well with everyone involved in the process, homeowner, native plant nursery and suppliers. Karen is a very cordial individual, involves you in in the planning process and makes sure you understand what is necessary to ensure the plants establish themselves. Of the twenty some plants that were recommended and planted by Karen all survived and are thriving. I would highly recommend Karen and will call on her services again when needed. Dean Jarosh

Recent Review: I met with the principal in his office in Santa Fe and decided to work with him.  The principal of The Surroundings and a second designer visited the property twice, we exchanged numerous e-mail messages, held a "Go to Meeting" for a draft presentation of the plan and discussion, and then a third visit for presentation of the final plan.  The presentation provides a phased in plan, taking into account existing structures, water flow and sun availability.  They listened to my ideas, incorporated most of them, provided great insight into what is already possible on the property and are a delight to work with.    I plan to use them to oversee the major phases of the work since I do not live on the property full time.

Recent Review: Everything went very smoothly, the first day involved removing large rocks from the yard and placing edging in areas to be zeros caped, rock was placed the first day. The second day the retaining wall for the garden and flowerbed areas were placed and and backfilled with soil. Trenches for the irrigation system were in place for 70% of the yard space. The third day the remaining trenches were completed and the sprinkler heads were installed & tested. Clean-up included spiffying up a messy construction pile in the alley and seeding the yard and training on the timer and how to adjust the heads if necessary.

Recent Review: I purchased 14 miniature Black Eye Susan plants and 3 Blue Salvias from this company in Aug. 2009. In the same flower bed, I planted 3 Dwarf Nandina bushes purchased from Lowe's and 9 Salvias (3 different varieties) from High Country Gardens via the internet. This spring (April 2010), every plant from Dunn's was dead and all the other plants from the 2 other suppliers was alive and thriving. I have been gardening for 40 yrs and I know I planted the plants correctly and watered them appropriately as evidenced by the survival and growth of the others not purchased from Dunn's. When I went back to Dunn's and complained, I was told they do not guarantee their plants. So I am out over $125 and will never shop there again. I should also add that in other flower beds, I have plants purchased from Walmart, 2 local growers at the Farmer's Market and more from High Country Gardens and none of those plants died. Only the plants from Dunn's didn't make it. I have worked in retail for over 30 yrs. and was always of the philosophy that the customer is always right. Dunn's made no attempt to make this right, other than to tell me to wait a couple of weeks, maybe the plants would still come up. I've waited 2 weeks and there is nothing growing.

Recent Review: He has done a lot of work for us past.. The most recent experience was great, but he sometimes is inconsistent with finishing the job to completion. The job will usually get done eventually. The job sometimes are not completed in an expeditious manner. He might not come back to finish it until a little while later. This guys is an honest man most of his work is very good.

Recent Review: The work was executed promptly and competently. Leroy asked for our approval of the work, and willingly made the changes that we suggested. It's hard to compare Leroy's charges with other contractors that we've hired, I'd guess that he was a little more expensive than some others. But Leroy was promptly responsive to our needs and the work was well done.

BZen Landscape Maintenance
He came out the afternoon to look at our 1 ½ ac of yard and ½ ac of gardens. Jeff price was probably reasonable – expensive but reasonable. Jeff has returned 5 or 6 times since late March. He is self sufficient, own tools, own mowers, own everything, no cigarette butts on ground, no weeds left on the ground and no grass left on the lawn. Jeff seems to have more work than he can handle. He is always rushed. Our yard needs more time than he is spending here. He says the 4 or so hours a week he spends here is all the time he has. I rate him and his work as an 8 on a 10. If he would spend 8hrs a week instead of 4 I would be much happier. Our yard requires more than 4 hours a week. It was neglected for several years. I have no concerns about his honesty. Timeliness he is a 10 on 10. Sufficiency 10 on 10. Prices high I think but less than competition and one of few landscape companies that will do the work. Most companies say yard is too big or too far away or too this or that.

Took me weeks to get a quote on a simple rock area clean up, which was recommended by Oasis while doing the yard for our tenants. We were told by the tenants that they had done a complete yard clean up leaving it looking good, better than when they arrived, however, the quote of $2,500, only a couple of months later, included more clean up. Our tenants neglected the garden for 10 months and brought in Oasis after we reminded them that keeping the yards maintained was part of their one year lease. They did respond well and had Oasis do the work, which according to both tenant and Brad, Oasis owner, they cleaned the yard to a good condition.  So, I questioned the quote that included more clean up of the yards, front and back, even though I had specifically asked for a quote for only the front. Oasis had been coming in on a bi-weekly basis to mow and continue maintenance. They responded saying there was more clean up needed and the quote was based on a Saturday overtime rate. The timing was not discussed and it took, from my initial contact May 7th, until June 19 to get this quote. When I questioned this, it was explained that they are too busy to fit us in so quoted a Saturday rate. Also, there was an issue with 3vbroken sprinkler valves, which Oasis offered to came and repair. We declined as the tenant said they were broken when they moved in so felt it wasn't their responsibility, HOWEVER, we did question why Oasis didn't notice it, especially since the tenant turned off the sprinkler valves in that area and the grass was noticeably not being watered. We've also contacted the tenant to let them know about this, with a detailed report of the last 3 years water usage and the Los Alamos Utility confirmation that there is no leak in the sprinkler system, as suggested by the tenant and Oasis. The extra water usage was due to the broken valves, which was not reported to us.  We've repaired the valves, got the sprinkler system working efficiently again, and asked another company to come in and do the work, including pruning and the extra cleaning, that they confirmed needed doing, in the front area at a price of $900.

AAffordable Pest Control
From our first contact, I knew this company was special. I interviewed every pest control company in this area, and got a special feeling from Affordable Pest Control's personable phone demeanor and contact availability. They didn't talk to me like I was just a number, or someone calling them inconveniencing them. They didn't rush me, they spoke to me on the phone like a friend! They took the time to care for me, being extremely afraid of spiders and needing help immediately. They DID NOT bad mouth their competitors when I asked them about them, a standard practice of mine to assess a company's integrity right off the bat. They drove to my home to introduce themselves and share with me what they could do for our problem and offer us a service agreement, a mere hours after my initial call. Upon first meeting, they put me at ease with their professionalism answering questions with regards to their contract, taking the time to fully explain every aspect of it I was wanting clarity or reassurance about and all this while remaining HUMAN! No sales pitching, no unrealistic claims, just real people doing honest work at a fair price. I had a special friendship with my exterminator from our previous base, being some one we see on a monthly basis, and never thought another exterminator would become so close to our family again. We were so wrong! I have to say our relationship with Affordable Pest Control has far surpassed that of our previous base, and we have gained friends for life! They took such great care of us for two solid years, sometimes coming out multiple times a month to help us when we needed it. We lived in a base house that has huge gaps in the walls and windows that allowed snowflakes to enter unharmed! Bugs were a huge problem. Affordable Pest Control even went beyond the call of duty to help seal holes in the baseboards and behind the stove where the government would not out of laziness, to keep bugs out of our home. They deserve this whole City's business, because they truly care, know their trade and do it well, and will go out of their way to help and all for a fair price. They offer a military discount, as well. Always pleasant to do business with, this company is GOLD. If you want service that outshines the competitors by using safe products made of green organic gardening friendly chemicals, a company that truly CARES about you as a person, a company that believes in charging FAIR prices and giving great service, always, please look no further than Affordable Pest Control. Thank you!

As I write this, on the Winter solstice and the third day of work, the work is proceeding well. I'm impressed by the quality of the materials and the professionalism of the workers. If possible, I will update this report and provide pictures when the work is completed and then again in the Spring.
