Recent Review: We got our propane gas from Azalea for the fireplace, and had them clean the fireplace when gas was delivered. After serviceman left we tried to light the pilot light and it would not light despite many tries by my husband. We called and we were charged an additional $119 service charge (plus taxes) and he could not light the pilot and were told we needed a new pilot assembly and he would call with a price. Several days later the service man called and said the charge would be $331.50 and that seemed excessive to us considering we had already paid $119 for a service charge. My husband very politely asked if there could be some consideration, considering what we had already paid (so the total would be $450) -- he said "he would talk to the boss" and send an email with a written quote (that was never sent) . We had the part number and the part was about $60. I checked Angie's List for Azalea Gas and saw there were only a few reviews (they were old) and received an F rating. I then researched other companies and found one with excellent reviews with an A rating, checked their website and we called that company. That Fireplace Guy told us often the pilot light just has to be cleaned (which I would have thought would have been done with the fireplace cleaning), but he does many calls to our community and he knew what was the required part and he stocks them. Turned out the pilot light only needed cleaning and we also got a blower installed for $11 more the price as Azalea quoted to replace a pilot light that did not need replacing! If we had called that guy first we would have actually saved the $119 service charge that we got nothing from.

Recent Review: We just love our new fireplace. Ron Jr came to our house to give us an estimate and advice on an appropriate fireplace for our space. He was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions on the efficiency and heat of the different fireplaces. The work was started on time and completed on schedule. From the first meeting with Ben in the showroom to the final inspection everyone involved in this project was friendly, courteous and professional. We would absolutely recommend this company to anyone looking to install a new fireplace.

We recently scheduled our yearly maintenance with The Fireplace Guy. While waiting for the technician, Bryan, to arrive I noticed a stain on the hearth which I assumed was a propane leak. By the time Bryan arrived my anxiety level was sky high. He immediately assured me it was a water leak, most likely caused by a leak around the flashing on the roof which they could easily repair. He then proceeded to clean and maintain our fireplace with expert care. He is very professional , personable and highly skilled. I highly recommend this company (and Bryan) without reservation.

Excellent. The Fireplace Guy arrived on time with a second repair person. He was courteous, friendly, and professional. He is 3rd generation owner and certified by the NFI, so he inspired confidence from the start. He proceeded with diagnostic work and some minor repair, including cleaning and repairing a short in the switch wire, explain gas he went along, which I found very helpful. So nice to have a working fireplace in such (relatively) cold weather.

Jeff showed up on time, friendly, and clean (that last one may sound weird but a big plus for a stranger coming into your house). Right off the bat I felt comfortable talking to him. He introduced himself to my dog who loved him immediately. Jeff set down a drop cloth, opened up the fire box, cleaned the glass, spray painted over the rust spots, realigned the logs and rocks for a better aesthetic, cleaned and serviced the pilot light and one or more worn out electric components. I asked him a bunch of questions while he worked and he was more than happy to answer them. The whole service call was done in about 45 minutes and the fireplace looks wonderful now. I usually don't like to give an across-the-board excellent review because it's rarely honest, but in this case, anything less wouldn't be accurate. I recommend Jeff to anyone looking for fireplace cleaning, service, or installation. There was never a moment of hesitation, nor did I ever hear 'well I'm not sure about this' or 'I'm going to have to see if I have that in the truck' which are surprisingly common even in my minimal experience of hiring technicians. Furthermore, the New Hanover County area appears to have very few fireplace service companies, with one of Jeff's competitors taking a week to return my call and then offering a one-hour service call two months out. Again, Jeff called me back on the next business day and was finishing the job five hours after we spoke.

The chimney had been filled with the old bricks and building materials and lowered below the roof line when the house was renovated before we bought it. Ron, Jr. and his helper Al cleaned out a pickup truck bed of debris and then built an air exchange system on the roof which is connected to the existing chimney. Even though we had told Piedmont Gas workmen where to put the new gas line for the fireplace, they missed the designated spot by several inches. Ron and Al had to relocate the line to meet the connections to the coal basket. Then, as predicted, sawing into the bricks caused problems that the fireplace frame did not cover up. We did end up having the front of the fireplace tiled in slate. Ron and Al covered our furniture with plastic and attempted to clean up as much of the brick dust as possible when they were finished. Ron, Jr. is knowledgeable and friendly. He knows his end of the family business well.

Jeff Smith, The Fireplace Guy, told us often the pilot light just has to be cleaned (which I would have thought would have been done with the separately priced fireplace cleaning we had done by the OTHER company). Jeff said he does many calls to our Brunswick Forest community and he knew what was the required part and he stocks them. Turned out the pilot light only needed cleaning and we also had a fireplace blower installed for just a few dollars more than the other company quoted to replace a pilot light that did not need replacing! If we had called Jeff first we would have actually saved the other company's $119 service charge that we got nothing from. In addition, if the fireplace should require additional service in the next year, Jeff does not charge an additional service charge and we would only pay for parts. Jeff was a really nice guy and explained things very well. He was also a big dog lover so that always gets points from me!
