Recent Review: Jim was very prompt and seemed responsive. He is a nice guy who works hard.  He started the work when he said he would and kept it on schedule in spite of some difficult weather.   His brother worked with him the first few days, but after that he did all of the work himself.  Unfortunately, the work does not look as professional as I had hoped.  Some of the wood is not cut straight, edges are not smooth, and there are many gaps between boards.  As the work got toward completion I told him of my concern that the workmanship was not good.  Jim said he would get it all fixed up at the end.  He filled some gaps with wood filler and sanded them, but did not finish due to rain.  The filled and sanded joints still look sloppy.  Unfortunately, these joints are right in front of the kitchen window, where we see them all the time. Jim said he has a lifetime guarantee on his work and will come back to finish this up.  I hope he will. Another builder told me that the structural work on the deck is very good, even "overbuilt," which I was glad to hear. Update: Jim came back and relaid some of the boards on the deck and it looks much better! I would definitely hire him again. Update:  The second summer after Jim built the deck I stained it myself, so I got a close look at the workmanship. Many boards were split by nailing, decking is not spaced uniformly, and  joints are not well fitted.

Recent Review: I bought a house which, I discovered too late, had significant dry rot in the deck railings, spindles and the railings going down he steps. The previous owner did a lot of puttying and painting to hide it, and did it well enough that the inspector didn't catch it. The deck is 12 feet above ground, so a solid railing is critical. TS Custom Decks and Construction was one of three companies I asked to bid on the work. The first company's bid was comparable in price, but lower in quality and up to 6 weeks out. The second company came to do the estimate, left and never called back or submitted a bid. Tracy from TS Custom Decks came out the next day, and had the bid to us in two days, including several options for finish and materials. We accepted the bid. As soon as the rainy weather stopped, the crew arrived, tore off the old wood on day one, and finished in less than three days. They carted away everything and did a truly beautiful job. There was not a scrap of wood, errant screw or left over soda can anywhere on the job site. Even my next door neighbor commented on how meticulous the crew was. You just don't see that much anymore. We are absolutely thrilled by the beauty of the work and the friendly, personable and professional manner in which Tracy conducts business. He was always prompt in returning phone calls or responding to email. I would recommend them, with complete confidence, to anyone.

Recent Review: Good, he came back two or three times to address our concerns and do the work. Replaced a warped stair hand rail board, put in a brace under our stairs as they are the longest by code. No bouncing no sagging they feel very solid now.

AHAMLEN HOME IMPROVEMENT
Other than the power-washer failing immediately and the spindles getting back-ordered, almost everything went without a hitch. We had dry, warm weather so there were no weather delays. Trevor does have a small challenge in getting the quotes in a form that makes sense. We just received (10/12/2011) the final bill which included the Front Porch Railing and spindles and the final charges for stain/paint/cleaner as well as the few extra hours of outside wood cleaning/power-washing that was needed to prepare the wood for painting.

ATS Custom Decks
Excellent job done by Tracy and his crew at TS Custom Decks! I had Tracy give me several quotes, which I thought was asking too much, but ge got back to me with every quote and we made a decision. I had somewhat of a time frame to get the deck done as I was having a family get together. He scheduled a date before I needed it done and had it finished within a couple days. The deck turned out much better than I expected. I have another deck that I'm going to have them construct plus a stair project. Highly recommended! Thanks!

AHAMLEN HOME IMPROVEMENT
It is all in the preparation. Work began as promised. Crew with owner scraped (using hand tools) and caulked all necessary surfaces. Custom colors matched to expectation. Two coats for solid and trim colors. Grounds, windows and adjacent improvements well protected. Crew began work promptly each day. Work progressed methodically and well paced. Application of paints was of a high professional quality. Clean-ups were complete. Crew was courteous. Project finished as agreed. Quoted price paid with happiness upon completion. Highly recommended company.

ATS Custom Decks
I had Tracy of TS decks tear down a rotting deck and build an entirely new one out of cedar, and I think he did a great job. I got five bids, and Tracy was in the middle in price but I went with him for two reasons: he really seemed to understand how I wanted the deck to look, and second, he had several references that were excellent, including a neighbor only two blocks away. During the design and permit process, I developed concerns about the placement of the support posts and Tracy was willing to re-design the deck and submit new plans to the permit office, which I really appreciated. The deck is quite high, coming off the second floor of my house, and built on a hill, so the height of the posts varies- but Tracy got the boards to be perfectly level. The deck went up in just a few days and is extremely solidly built with deep footings. The cedar rail and deckboards look great, and I love the aluminum spindles. I've had it for two years now and there has been no problems with the solidity or wear to the deck. I would recommend Tracy for any big deck project.

CHAMLEN HOME IMPROVEMENT
We chose Hamlen Home Repair because Trevor Hamlen had just finished a small front porch on a nearby home. His truck advertised "Building, Remodeling, and Restoration Services" along with decks, floors, roofs, electrical, plumbing, landscaping, and painting. Our 1915 home was in great need of either paint or siding. We chose paint to preserve the character of the house and because Trevor assured us that new paints on the market would hold for many years to come. We chose to go with the top one he recommended at $48/gallon for 15 gallons, making the paint alone $720. We did enjoy interacting with Trevor personally, but ultimately, we came to realize that he tended to either over promise what he could deliver or didn't hold the same standards for quality work that we did. The things that most disappointed us were that he spray painted rather than hand painted the house (we neither asked nor understood the difference at the time), he had promised that no paint would get on any of the windows and later we spent many hours scraping off a haze of paint, and he said that everything would be cleaned up and left in excellent shape, which it wasn't. We were more than willing to do whatever we could to help, including scraping (although we weren't very good at it) but we also found ourselvesncleaning up scraped paint, restacking old lumber, retaping plastic on windows, cleaning up nails, and in general, keeping things as organized as we would have liked them to be. This was very important because we have a business in the home and customers coming and going. Although the paint is of excellent quality and overall is standing up to the weather, we still have had some peeling in places where water had saturated the old boards and had not been treated properly before painting. We discovered this later when we hired a different painter to do the repairs. Lastly, the painting and rebuilding of the porch took much longer than we were told because of health issues in the Hamlen family. We were understanding of this but it seemed to happen on a more frequent basis than we would have anticipated. We shared our concerns with Trevor in writing at the end. He wrote back with genuine concern, which we appreciated. Perhaps the stumbling block in all this is that Trevor often said that he "strives for perfection" in his work. There is, of course, no one who can deliver this and no two people who have the same definition for it. More knowledge of fine old lumber--how to clean, prime, and carefully paint it--was what we NOW know that we needed
