Recent Review: The work started in November of 2011, with one man doing all the labor.  He was very professional and has done excellent quality work.  The project did take longer than originally anticipated for 3 reasons; weather, the construction worker has family concerns that required him leaving in the mid-afternoon each day and sometimes required him to be at home (this was not a problem for us, as we had no specific time-line to complete the job), and there was also about a week where he had to finish a previous job.  Time was given after completion of the work for us to live with the deck for a couple of weeks before sending in the final payment.  That was delayed as we were waiting for some paperwork from the contractor before finall payment was made.  We were not pressured by the contractor at any time, and communication was generally good (i.e. we didn't have to call several times to find out information - our calls were responded to in a timely manner).  Overall, we are wonderfully pleased with our new deck and porch flooring.  It's a vast improvement in quality and appearance over what we had previously (which was also composite material that had warped, as well as the lap band pulling away from the house).

Recent Review: I was having a difficult time locating a handyman in my area.  I finally researched Angie’s List and contacted Andrew Strugar (dba Handyman Pete) in Squaw Lake.  We are selling our house and we needed some general contracting assistance.  We needed to have a living room window exterior molding replaced and leak fixed; we needed our exterior railings reinstalled on our concrete stoop; we needed an exterior pre-hung steel door installed in the garage. He came up one day to survey the jobs and discuss terms.  He is honest, up-front, and very personable.  He discussed what he was going to do and how he would do it.  He provided the estimate and agreed on work dates. He arrived ready to work and in one day finished the window molding and stair rail re-installation.  The work was EXCELLENT. He was very detailed, professional, and diligent.  He cleaned up each work site as each job was completed. The next work day he installed the pre-hung steel door.  Every once in a while I would check out how he was doing and he was doing a great job on the installation.  He did everything I expected an expert to do on a door installation.  He did it first-rate and UNDER budget. I would recommend this man to anyone and everyone.  If you need work done YOU NEED TO CALL THIS MAN!  His work product is first-rate, prices good, and professional.  He will ALWAYS be the first one I call!

Recent Review: Kerry was available during the winter to provide an estimate for the project. His estimate was much more reasonable then other estimates we received from builders in Crosslake. We planned to start the project in the spring however delays in other projects Kerry had put our construction into the summer. Kerry worked with us to make sure he understood the materials we wanted to use and make sure the design was what we expected. Once the project started, Kerry was prompt in arriving each morning and worked diligently every day until the project was complete. He cleaned up the worksite before he left each day. He was polite and easy to work with. We are pleased with the final result, it is exactly what we wanted.

Recent Review: Once Lon was able to start the project, he worked quickly and efficiently.  The deck was done within a couple of days.  He respected my request to get this done before winter, even though he was busy with other jobs/projects, and he said that he would dig through frozen ground, if he had to in order to get it done.  I don't think it came to that, but I know the ground was tough to dig.  My impression of Lon is that he genuinely cares about his customers as well as the type of work he does.  He called after the project to make sure that everything was okay and that it met our expectations.  Several people have commented that they like the way our "steps" look.  My dad - who has built several decks himself - said that Lon did a good job and that he liked the way that he did the top railing - no screws show.  The completed project exceeded my expectations.  Even my husband who is very fussy and particular said that he would definitely recommend Lon and would not hesitate to have him do other projects for us.

CHandyman Matters
Job 1: Door looks and functions very well. We are satisfied with the door, but upon completion, our garage door opener no longer worked as the contractor accidentally clipped the wire. Took over two weeks for someone to come out and get opener functional again. Part of this delay was due to some unforeseen circumstances the company experienced, but even so, two weeks seems like a long time to get someone to simply reconnect a wire. Job 2: Very unsatisfied with this component. Contractor agreed to stain new handrail to match (as close as possible) our existing handrails.  They don't even come close to matching.  Existing hand rail was a red oak material with a dark red stain with a smooth finish and we wanted to somewhat match what was already there. Paid for contractor to do this but were left with a blonde-stained hand rail with a rough surface instead. Contractor claimed the color was as close as he could get it due to the difference in age of materials. Our intent was never to have the materials match exactly as we understood this was unrealistic. However, they are not even close: existing is dark red and smooth while new is blonde and rough. After a cursory search at a home improvement store, we are guessing the contractor just used a stain he had on hand rather than purchasing even a relatively close stain. Anyone who has seen the "match" of our handrail agrees that they could have easily been stained to better match (or we could have just done it ourselves and had better results). Furthermore, when I brought this issue up to the company they offered no assistance: they held firm that the colors matched as close as possible. See attached photo (I also emailed photo to company).  In hindsight, we should have just stained the new hand rail ourselves. Job 3: Very satisfied with this portion.  They experienced some electrical difficulties, but completed the job as quickly as possible and cleaned everything up really well (e.g. patching tile work). Summary:  Basically, most of the work was done in a satisfactory manner.  PROS: work was done pretty quickly, most work was done pretty well, projects were kept to the estimated cost  CONS: not taking complaint about handrail seriously (we were VERY unsatisfied with the work done on that job, which should have been the easiest of the three jobs), slow response to electrical issue caused by door installation, general over-chattiness of one of the contractors.   Update:  This job was completed in White Bear Lake, not New Ulm.

DThe Deck & Door Company
Ordered new railing system on Monday, June 24th and paid on Tuesday, June 25th for delivery on Friday morning, June 28th and was told that 1 product was not in stock but will order and have by Friday. It is now Friday at 4:00 and nothing has been delivered and I called to have it delivered to the house. The delivery guys come around 5:00 and leave the product and as they leave they tell me that we are 3 posts short and it will be here in 7-10 days. I call the store and talk to a customer service person and ask why they didn't communicate this to me when I called and asked for delivery or any time before. They couldn't answer, so I asked them to come back and take it back because I didn't want the product sitting at my house for over a week if I couldn't put it up. The "Owner" Bob calls me 5 minutes later and gets mad that I want to return it. I didn't want responsibility of this product if I couldn't put it completely together and with product being on back order it could be longer then 10 days. He then started to blame me for making a last second change with the posts, as I stated it was ordered Monday! As the conversation went on frustration kicked in and I said that I want to return the product and I will take my business somewhere else. The delivery guys come back to pick it up and I asked for a credit receipt, they said that I would have to go back in and get it because they need to make sure all product is accounted for. Therefore, my brother and I go into the store on Saturday morning and I ask kindly for a credit receipt, the "Owner" Bob starts making insults at me by calling me a Big Baby and to Grow Up and throwing the F-Bomb at me. I tried to argue and state that he had 3 days to communicate to me that he didn't have or expect the product on Friday and then he tells me that it was coming in on Monday. I then asked then why did your delivery guy and your other customer service person tell me 7-10 days. He wouldn't answer it and kept throwing the insults at me.
