Recent Review: We had our heat pump installed by Higgins this year; we chose them because they installed the brand that I wanted. Charlie came out and looked at our existing furnace that we were adding this heat pump to, told us about the different models that we could get; I chose the one that would get me back the largest rebate, which incidentally was the most expensive and largest unit. We sign the dotted line; Charlie says it would be likely in the next week to get it installed. Didn't hear anything at all for a week and a half until I called, where I was told that, even though he had come out and saw what we had, couldn't find the right part for the $250 rebate, but that he ordered the one that would work, just no rebate. They would be out to install it on Tuesday. Fine, whatever, the loss of $250 hurt, for sure, and there was no discussion of, "Hey, this is different now, would you like to revisit the options, since you aren't getting back the rebate"... nope, not even discussed. Strike one, and I am starting to get that feeling in my stomach of a dishonest contractor.   The installation went well enough, they got everything in place, mostly done well, and the things I didn't like I just fixed myself, mainly that they had cabling exposed to the weather, I came back and ran it through some sealtite, no big deal, I had enough. They said when the electrician finished, just flip the bypass and we are good to go. After my electrician finished, I flipped the switch, and it blew cold air instead of warm. Strike two. I called the company and the receptionist scheduled a tech to come out the next day. He did, on time, and I felt better, but unfortunately he couldn?t figure out what was going wrong, said it was something about high pressure, bled off some of the refrigerant, still couldn?t get anything, told me they would be back on Friday or before to look at it. The wife stayed home on Friday, no call, no show, I called them at about 4pm, the receptionist told me she would have them call me right back, never heard a word. Called Charlie again on Monday, installation options, since you aren't getting the money back that I told you would he said they would be out on Thursday at 9:30. Against my better judgment, I went ahead and paid for it. Thursday rolled around, 9:30 rolled around, no call no show, I called them at 10:30, Charlie said their guy was running behind, I said fine, what time, he said they were on their way now, another hour later they showed up. I wasn't at home, my wife stayed home again, bless her, to let them in. Turns out the initial installation missed an electrical hookup on the control board. I won?t say that was sloppy, but maybe not attention to detail? It is working now, but I am having serious misgivings if I need warranty work...

Reviews in Alexandria to Install or Replace Heat Pumps

AAir-Max Heating & Cooling Inc
Received recommendation for Air Max from an engineer providing an estimate on replacing insulation in our home. This engineer indicated that Doug, at Airmax, did an excellent and honest job of accurately determining appropriate heating and cooling needs. Called Doug. He was responsive and professional. Gave me many options in terms of quality and price. He also patiently answered all of my questions. Once I indicated I was interested in working with them, the units were installed within a week.

AGravelle Plumbing & Heating
We had a very good experience with Gravelle Plumbing and Heating. We arranged a date/time for the rep to come out and spec out the job. He was on time. He was very courteous, listened to what we wanted, and provided suggestions. He emailed a comprehensive bid out shortly after his visit which included the estimate from the electrician that we wanted to use (the electrician that wired the house originally). After we accepted the bid Gravelle arranged a date for install and coordinated with the electricians. They were on time, did a nice job with the installation, cleaned up, and provided information on how best to run the unit. I would definitely use Gravelle again in the future for any heating/cooling, or plumbing needs.

Terrible, Installer came to put a new furnace in our home this winter to replace a system that was barely over one year old that had failed. We have a multistage system (gas furnace, heat pump, and plenum). Part of the system worked but he couldn’t figure out how to hook the rest up apparently he needed so more information. Even though the install wasn’t complete he asked for payment saying he would come back the next week to wrap it up and I made the mistake of trusting that and paid him. Four months later after much hounding he finally came back to hook the rest up. The installer’s story about what was and wasn’t working and why constantly changed. The system is already not working as it should and we can’t even test the rest of it because it is no longer heating season (needs to be less than 10 degrees out to make sure things are kicking on and off when they are supposed to). They will not stand behind their install job as we asked if they would guarantee their install to be correct in the fall when it’s cold enough to see if it was working right. Terribly disappointing and frustrating, this was the second furnace install we’ve paid for in less than 2 years and it looks like we will have to find yet a third installer. Apparently it is very hard to find a qualified individual these days, but don’t worry when they can’t figure something out it’s never their fault!

ATim's Heating and Refrigeration
I made personal visits and calls to several area contactors and got no bids or return calls from any of them. I heard of Tim's through a friend at work and called him on a Tuesday afternoon. He came to my home on Tuesday evening and looked at my units and gave me a written estimate. I did a little more checking around and found his bid to be very good. I called him on Thursday the same week and confirmed my order. They arrived Tuesday, one week after initial bid and started install. They completed install Wednesday afternoon before I got home from work. I called Tim's that same "night" to get some programing assistance, they picked up and walked me through the process. Great guys, I would definetly recomend them.

AJOHNSON HEATING & AC
Dan Johnson was very likeable and easy to work with. His work proposal was based on several options that were clearly explained and discussed in great detail, and the final bill was exactly as proposed. Dan communicates well about his schedule and his work; far better than many tradesmen I know. He arrived when promised, and his work was always performed in a timely manner. In the six years since his original installation, Dan has made several maintenance and service calls. These visits have maintained the same standard of professionalism. I can't imagine hiring anyone else.

FSEARS HOME IMPROVEMENT PRODUCTS
After 10 days of "searching for a certified Sears repair technician" Sears finally told us to find a local technician to do the repairs on our heat pump. The parts are still under warranty, but when the technician that I hired called their parts department they did not cooperate in helping to find the parts needed. Since the technician was not certified as a Sears technician he obviously didn't know the part numbers, without the part numbers they would not send the parts.  I ended up paying for $100 worth of parts that are still under warranty as well as paying the labor. Sears refused to help us in any way.
