Recent Review: We needed to add railings to the steps inside our garage leading into the home. I submitted an internet inquiry and got a response within 36 hours, not as quick as I would have liked but better than average for non-internet businesses, and was able to set up an appointment for the next day, a Tuesday. The sales person was on time and quickly looked at what was needed and explained our options and priced the project. I agreed to the proposal and told the salesperson we needed the railing installed by the end of the week if at all possible. He said he would do everything in his power to get the job done in the time frame requested, he even called the office and explained the problem and requested that the work be done ASAP. The next day, Wednesday, a person came by to confirm the measurements and I was pleasantly surprised when we got a call Saturday morning that they would be out that afternoon to install the railings. The installers actually showed up before noon and had completed the installation before noon. I was very pleased and will use then again for any of their products that we might need and would definitely recommend them. My only issue was I thought the pricing a little high, but then I tend to feel that way about a lot of pricing in today's market.
Recent Review: We are very happy with the work that was done. The crew was punctual and professional and the results are beautiful. Really great job.

Recent Review: Gary repaired two pocket doors in our home that were sticking or falling off the rails. He replaced the track system in both, and was able to do so without affecting our walls. We had been putting off these repairs for a long time due to our understanding that most carpenters would take down a wall to replace a track, so it was a huge relief when we found Gary and learned that he could do this seamlessly!

Recent Review: I was referred to Almar Carpentry through a lumbar yeard in Novi. After the initial phone call to him to explain what I needed him to do, he followed up with a visit to our home. He assessed the work to be done and went over many options as we were unsure of what we could get done. We really wanted a glass railing system, and Alan came up with the great idea of the glass panels between the posts. Our first impression of Alan was that he was friendly, knowledgeable, and showed us his portfolio of previous work, and as a cabinet maker I knew his work would be clean and accurate. We shared a couple of common hobbies, and rather than shop around for another contracter/quote, we went with Alan, as we felt very comfortable with him. Let me state that our first impressions were right on. The job looks fantastic and Alan kept us appraised during the whole project. We felt so comfortable with Alan that he worked a number of days in our home while we were both at work. We are already having him provide his quote to do our kitchen backsplash, and feel great that we have discovered a fantastic contractor that we can rely on and know the job will be done professionally and timely.

Recent Review: Redecking with Trex composite is an expensive investment and we wanted to be certain we hire the right person for the job. We’ve collected quotes from different contractors for over two years now. We looked online, Trex website and on Angie’s list, asked friends and neighbors, asked lumber suppliers and major brick and mortar stores. It looks like during these times, some are so busy that they can’t even answer their phones or return messages. Others show up at your house at inconvenient times when you’re not there and quote the job over the phone. For this kind of project we generally like to see the person who we will be working with face to face and preferably the owner, not a sales guy or some ball boy. If for a new job they don’t have time to show up, imagine what happens if something goes wrong and you need them to come fix it. We don’t like companies that sub-contract and we don’t like one-man businesses that can vanish overnight. We also don’t like companies that start a job and then move on to the next without finishing. And we don’t appreciate being insulted with ridiculous quotes just because the contractors are too busy and afford to lose business. So, based on all of these criteria, we eliminated many of the contractors we’ve seen and finally settled on Michigan Best Deck Builders because they were the most realistic, responsive and fair. And hopefully, we can count on them in the future with any issues we might have with our deck. Aaron, the owner was available to come to our house and look at the deck at a very convenient time for me which was late in the day (so I did not have to take time off from work). He was very open to our suggestions and was willing to do everything we requested. He was very patient and listened and answered all of our concerns. He laid out the plan for our deck, took measurements and gave us suggestions. He showed us some photos with similar decks he has done with the same style and colors. We liked that he was very open to anything that we came up with: such as adding chicken wire instead of a skirt or deck screening to keep the animals out from under our deck but still allow air to flow and prevent sub-frame structure decay. Due to the size of our deck, we also wanted a parallel backbone deck board installed and edging of a different color. That was not a problem for him and the bump in price was small compared with the added work that they had to do. We also wanted the Trex lights on the post caps, step facias and some installed on the deck boards. We had a combination of benches and rails that we wanted to allow for both privacy and comfort and we had two stairs, each with 3 steps. We put every detail down in writing so there was no question on what was needed at the time the project got built. Aaron agreed to all of our terms and gave us a fair price and we decided to hire him and feel very good about our decision. From the date of signing the contract until the first day of work took about 9 weeks but we were warned that we had to wait a long time because they are busy. That was not a big concern for us but it was a little frustrating not knowing ahead of time when I needed to take some time off from work to be home. Their schedule runs based on the weather so I understand that it’s hard for them to estimate a start date. Before the day they started working, new Trex materials were delivered to our driveway. Make sure they call you ahead so they don’t block your driveway with the material. The next day, in the morning, one guy showed up and started tearing the old deck boards apart. This took pretty much the entire day. The following days the rest of the crew came - including Aaron’s brother and father - and started installing the new deck boards. They replaced the rim boards and added intermediate joists and noggins for the rim and backbone. Everything that we didn’t like we pointed to them and they promptly corrected without hesitation. They installed the chicken wire exactly to our requirements and even helped us install weed barrier under the deck. The entire crew was very courteous and genuinely carrying for our concerns. They even made a cover for my sump drain pipe that sticks out from the siding and goes under the deck into the ground. Also they had to remove the cover from under the doorwall as it was caulked onto the old decking and they rebuilt it with Trex material. They built the benches with two posts for better sturdiness and at the correct height we wanted. In fact, every step of the way we were consulted to our preferences and we appreciated that a lot. The benches and the Trex rails look outstanding and give the deck a pleasant and inviting view. When the job was done, they left the site clean of any debris or nails. They even helped me cut down a bunch of tree branches and hauled them away together with the old decking at no extra cost. Overall, they did a very good job with high attention to detail. We’re happy with how the deck looks and we hope it will last a long time. One thing I should mention is that their phone answering lady might not always be up to date with what happens in the field so be patient when you call.

This was a small job that the big box stores wouldn't do. Edward May was punctual and after going to the store with me to make sure I had all the parts needed, installed my new railings with no problem. Thanks!

Great - see above. The price below ($800.00) is for the porch railing. The other work mentioned was completed last year. The reason I am not putting up photos is because I don't know how to do it.

AThe Guy-Lawn, Landscape, Home Improvement
I called several companies and had a hard time getting anyone to come out and give me an estimate for this work.  The Guy Company came out within just a few days, provided a quote and then scheduled the job within one week once we were ready.  They completed the job quickly and were easy to work with.  They repaired the porch and repainted it and replaced our porch railing which was loose and also not up to code in terms of proper height.

AMichael's Home Repair & Remodeling
Michael returned my calls promptly. He met me at the house we were prepping to sell, gave me an estimate, then returned with an assistant to complete the work. He unexpectedly had to purchase a small plumbing part but went out of his way to complete everything before the city inspector came. He was pleasant and professional and did good work. I plan to call him for some more projects, both large and small, at my own home.

Subcontractor appeared without notification. I had to go to work. When I returned work was done but old railings had not been removed. I had to leave the following morning to go out of town. I returned two days later, old railings removed but downspouts had not been reattached. I called the company and they sent a crew to complete job. Final billing was $200 less than agreed with annotation that railings were dipped not powder coated as originally contracted. After job completion the clean-up was barely acceptable.

CKruger Carpentry
This is the only Angie’s List professional who never bothered to answer my detailed request for help with a project. I wrote twice spaced five days apart and now over a week ago. I understand completely if they’re busy, aren’t interested in the job, etc. but the courteous and professional thing to do would have been to send a quick note saying so. I live in the next city over so it would have been a convenient job.

ASuperior Woodworking & General Contracting
We hired Scott to repair and replace some second story wood railings when the original contractor messed up the job and left without returning.  He came when he said he would, and he contacted us in advance to keep us updated as to changes to the schedule (there was only one).  He brought a very clean and tidy trailer to work out of, which showed that he cared about his craft. Scott worked quickly and efficiently in the time he was here, and the railings look great.  We were very satisfied with the both the product and the process, but especially with how professional Scott was throughout.  It's rare to find this level of professionalism with contractors, so I'm glad we found someone we can call in the future.  Thanks, Scott, for a job well done!
