Recent Review: After seeing their product at the Minneapolis Home & Garden show we were convinced that this was the right product for our porch improvement work. The guys from EZ-Screen brought samples to our home to help us select frame color and installation method. They took careful measurements of all of the window and door openings and put our order in motion. A few weeks later our windows and door were delivered. We did this work at the same time we had some exterior siding work done by another contractor. We arranged to have that contractor do the actual installation of the EZ-Screen product. The rep from EZ-Screen came out to our site when the installation started to ensure that our contractor understood how to properly install the windows and door. Everything went smoothly and contractor commented on how easy the windows went in. After three full seasons of use we still enjoy the product and we're pleased that we chose this as part of our porch renovation. It has added several additional months to our porch usage in our short Minnesota summer seasons. I highly recommend this product for any new screen porch or porch renovation job!

Recent Review: Teachout Builders were great about communicating with us throughout the process. They were very busy at the end of the summer, so we were told it would be at least a month before they started work. Taylor kept us informed of the probable start date, and various weather delays. He guided us through the process, and was responsive to our questions and concerns. The work was completed, and the porch and door look great! We had gotten a verbal agreement about reusing our old porch railing, if possible, but it had not been written on our work order, and the railing was inadvertently discarded. Taylor has said that he will honor the verbal agreement, and cover the cost of the new railing, if we decide to go ahead with adding it. And he also has given us assurance that he will return in the spring to fix minor discoloration in the porch cement. We feel very comfortable working with this company. Taylor has proven himself and the company to be skilled, professional, courteous, and to honor their word. We would not hesitate to recommend Teachout Builders for any construction projects.

Recent Review: The crew was very professional and friendly.  They did an excellent of building the porch, steps and railings.  The job was finished when I expected and the quality of work was exceptional.  The scope of the job was changed slightly (porch was extended by about 2 feet) but the job was still completed on time.  The crew did a very good clean-up when they were done.  The downspout and gutter shield was also done in an excellent manner.  I will definitely use Northern again.

Al is personable and easy to talk to about budgets and visions, and his staff & workers were punctual, friendly, and always ready to answer questions and talk about options. Definitely would (and likely will) hire again. People driving by have even stopped to compliment our new porch!

Recent Review: John Brunette came to the house to give us our estimate. He was very thorough and asked lots of questions about what we wanted for our porch. He was very professional. He got us the estimate about a week later with a very detailed plan for the new porch. He had to come back a few times with revisions to the plans as we continued to refine the plan with finishing touches. John was great throughout the process calling with updates and notifying us when there would be delays.  The workers arrived every day at 7:30 am and worked very hard. They got the roof done in two days and were very careful about cleaning up my shrub bed to get all the nails and old shingles. They removed the refuse regularly. My new screened porch looks terrific and I'm very happy. I would definitely call on them again for other home upgrades.

The contract with Northern was signed in November 2008 with the understanding that work could not begin until spring 2009.  A $5,000 deposit was required.  I didn't hear from Northern again until March or April 2009.  First, they needed to get the building permit from the City of Lansing.  I was angered that they had not done this all during the winter when they kept my deposit - in fact, from my perspective, they had done no prepatory work at all for my project.    It is because of this that I've rated them a "C" on responsiveness.  It turned out that the City denied the permit on the basis that my home was on a flood plain.   Because of that, a building permit had to be obtained through the State of Michigan Department of Environmental Quality which would over-ride the City's decision.  This delayed the beginning of the project by a least another month. Once the permit was finally secured, work began in May 2009.  First the roof was replaced, then the framing for the porch was done.  The new gable porch roof was built over the old porch roof.  A juniper bush was removed where the new porch would be extended over.  Since the original porch floor was cement, it was removed by jack hammer, and hard manual labor.  The new porch floor was also poured cement.  The porch railings and a couple stairs were built with treated lumber.  This lumber, however, was very green and after 2 years has begun to warp noticeably in several places.  Also, some of the lumber used for the columns and porch roof support had unsightly knots and imperfections which could have been placed by the builder in less obvious positions.  In a couple places where the stairs were screwed in, the wood split and little pieces of wood loosened from the edges of the stairs. Insulation was blown in through a hole that the contractor cut in the new roof and then repaired.   I have often wondered why they didn't install the insulation through the access inside the house - but assumed they did it this way because it was easier for them. New double pane basement windows were installed, and finally a new garage door was installed. The total project was completed by the end of June 2009.  Overall, I am satisfied with the workmanship and the end results:  there is no more ice damming, no more leaks around the basement windows, no leaks in the roof or into the garage like the old roof had.  I enjoy my porch in spite of the imperfections in the lumber.

We asked Jeff to look at our roof which was loosing shingles.  The roof was also leaking because we were getting water dripping down into the kitchen and laundry room.  Jeff told us that we needed a new roof.  We decided that if we were doing a new roof, now would be the time to add a front porch that we had been wanting.  Jeff had done previous work for us (built a room in our basement, siding, and a new roof on a previous house), so we trusted his ability to design and complete the work.  After we saw how beautiful the porch was, we decided to add a side porch with a roof.
