Poor professionallism. Had a cement truck drive thru yard after told this was not ok.  Sidewalk looks like h***.  Hill and valleys, rough edges.  Cement splattered on house and back door. Trim on bottom of back door torn loose.  and more  Awful. Not even on the agreed area we talked about to have walk.  Yard was left all torn up and previous pieces of cement from prior path were grated in next to new walk rather than removed or put all to the side.  Pitiful!

Arrived as scheduled and all work performed as agreed. They even filled in around the sidewalk with black dirt and I was not expecting them to do that.

Scheduling was initially delayed by spring rains and I thought rescheduling could have done quicker.  However, once the job was started they finished within two days - as quickly as they possibly could given the cement had to cure a day before the job could be finished.  The crew was very professional and friendly and the finished job was exactly as bid plus a little more.  A little more - they reset the railing and leveled and set the steps going to the porch.  I would use them again.   They were also willing to do this small job where as several others didn't submit a bid or submitted an extremely high bid.

He did a great job with the work but his follow up was not good. He was supposed to give me and my neighbor a $250 rebate a piece in December because we both hired him at the same time. We have yet to see the rebate and at this point would not be able to recommend him.

They poured the driveway about eight inches narrower than the garage door. When I complained I had a terrible time getting them to come out and acknowledge the problem. They poured a step at an angle that was about three times the normal angle and I had to involve the township inspector in order to get them to fix it. Apparently the person who measured originally did it incorrectly but the crew did not challenge it at all. I think the problem with the steps was caused by carelessness. The worst part is that they refused to address or acknowledge the problem. I do not recommend them.

Clark, the owner, initially came out to give me an estimate. We talked about the what color would work well. I wanted stamped cement that would have a blue border to match my shutters, door and top of my porch, but it seems the only choice I had was a darker gray. The gray with the darker gray border looks nice. But I was surprised I could not get the border color I really wanted. The quote was written on the back of a business card. The original price quoted was $1950. Right before Clark started the work he called to say he needed a $100 more. His reason did not make sense, something about needing a minimum. I agreed to $100 more because I got another quote a few hundred dollars more. The crew arrived pretty much on time. I was told it would be a 2-3 day process. Right before Clark put on the seal, I asked him to fix some rough spots. There was one spot where the line between the walk part was not straight. This was fixed and it looks great. I had to ask Clark to take the wooden step away. Initially it was left behind. Again, overall Montague did a good job, A- or B+ would be my grade. After the crew left I saw they left spots in my driveway. Not sure if it is dried cement. The marks are also grey and the rain did not wash it off.

Despite the written estimate clearly stating that the project will be completed ?per the plan? and us providing Montague with our scaled drawing, the contractor did not follow the plan! There were two very clear and obvious instances early on in the day where the contractor had incorrectly located the forms, when those were pointed out to the contractor they were changed. However, when our Landscape Architect arrived to inspect the final forms per her plans, she immediately noticed other errors. When asked to make the changes the contractor immediately responded it was too late. They proceeded to pour the concrete. We called the contractor on the phone asking to meet with him onsite and discuss our displeasure with the project. While he did come back on-site, his response was to boarder the sidewalk with another type of concrete.  Upon getting other opinions, we heard from other professionals that this either would not hold up, or would look odd.  He did offer to refund a small amount of money.  After thinking about it, we asked the original contractor to remove the incorrectly installed portion of our sidewalk and install per plan.  His response was threatening. While we never mentioned sueing him, he responded to the effect ?The last time someone tried to take me down this path they had to pay my attorney fees and court costs.?  That tone lead me to believe that any sort of reimbursement was off the table.  While we desire to make the sidewalk ?per plans? we elected to put family first and not spend unknown amounts of time and energy dealing with this matter. We feel strongly that we are right, and have multiple professional opinions supporting us and acknowledging that the work was not ?per plan.? Bottom line, unless you are doing something straight forward without a detailed plan, I would not recommend this contractor.

Highly recommend Montague Construction Custom Concrete. Just had our porch, sidewalk and driveway taken out And replaced. Two day job from beginning to end. Personable, knowledgable, efficient, team. Clark Montague and his crew did a MOST EXCELLENT job. Not only priced right for the amount of work done but extra care taken before and after installation of the concrete to your lawn and landscaping.

Overall, the services were performed well. The only concerns that we had were the cleanup (which was not done).  That is, items were left and were not properly cleaned up on completion. For example, the water hose was used but it was not wound back up onto the reel; the edging was removed and simply left on the grass.  These issues spoiled what was a fairly good experience.  To be honest, we tried to secure bids from several concrete firms, only to find that they either did not respond or responded too lately.

Recent Review: This evaluation written July 15, 2013. As far as the cement work, they did an excellent job. The porch cap was installed properly so that water from rain or melting snow is directed to the front of the porch and drains off onto the ground. The new step and sidewalk look better than the original one. We received their proposal in July, 2008 and paid the down payment in August, 2008. From that point on it went downhill. They would set a date and time to come to the house to work on the project and neither show up nor call. They also showed up unexpectedly and did work when we weren't expecting it. This pattern of not showing up when expected and showing up when not expected repeated itself three or four times until the cement work on the porch cap and the sidewalk was completed in November, 2008. During this time, phone calls to the company were seldom returned, but one of the owners did show up (unexpectedly of course) to be very charming and explain that they were getting more large projects from the State of Michigan and couldn't work our small project in. The porch cap was not sealed or caulked nor the sidewalk sealed because it was too late in the season and the temperature too cold. It was agreed they would return in the Spring, 2009 to finish the job. Also, while removing the old sidewalk they had torn up a portion of our blacktop driveway as well as gouging out a small area of front lawn with their bobcat. Both these items needed to be fixed. Please keep in mind that at that time we seldom used our front door to enter or exit the house. Most of the time we used the garage for our comings and goings. Come Spring, 2009 I happened to look outside and saw a young man rinsing off the sidewalk. I went out and another guy was hosing off the porch. As usual, there had been no advance notice they were coming. They had done a good job of scrubbing the porch and side walk to prep it to be sealed. The blacktop area of our driveway had been repaired and top soil brought in to fill in the gouged area of the front lawn. Neither of those repairs were done particularly well. The young men told me that they would be back the next day to do the sealing UNLESS it rained. Well the next day it rained so the porch and sidewalk did not get sealed. At some time, they sneaked back and sealed the porch and sidewalk WITHOUT cleaning them again. The porch had also been caulked. Not only did they administer seal to the DIRTY porch and sidewalk, it didn't look like it had been applied evenly. The sidewalk looked pretty bad and the porch looked REALLY bad. We were exhausted by the whole thing and decided we were through with Hanneman and Fineis, and we did not pay the small amount still owed to the company. At some later time (and I do not know when) one of the owners contacted my husband about the amount due, and my husband sent him several photos of the porch and sidewalk. There has been no further contact to or from the company since then.
