Business Description: One of Michigan’s largest landscape supply yards, offering hardgoods and pond supplies for both homeowners and contractors, with outstanding service in a friendly and informative atmosphere. Since 1928 and in our 4th generation. Rocks ‘N’ Roots, one of Michigan’s largest landscape hardgood and pond centers, is a success story. In 1918, when he arrived from Switzerland speaking almost no English, Patriarch August Zendt started his dream of a landscape company with one small pickup truck. As each of his three sons graduated from MSU with horticultural degrees, they joined him and built one of Michigan’s most prestigious landscape companies – Zendt’s Landscaping. In 1994, Jack and Barbara Zendt saw the need for a supply yard that would offer a wide range of landscape and pond material with outstanding service for the contractor; in an inviting and informative atmosphere friendly enough for homeowners too – and Rocks ‘N’ Roots was born.

Recent Review: What a wonderful experience. Very prompt in doing the estimate and I signed the contract the same day. The super intendant came out and went over the plans. All was satisfactory and we set a date for the work to be done. Scott, the carpenter was very punctual. He put drop cloths down from the front door to the room he was working in. He had no problem doing the job and he did it very well. I am 100% satisfied and will definitely hire them again.

Recent Review: This contractor was a pleasure to work with, and was eager to help provide us coordination of the various trades required. The job consisted of a large (approx. 50 square) asphalt roof replacement complicated by existing stone veneer problems with a chimney chase. A-1 responded promptly to our request for quotation, and when the full scope of work was finally determined, provided a detailed quote and an accurate projection of the time frame to complete the work. The owner was on site daily to provide supervision and direction fo this crews. Spot problems involving things like cleanup were promptly addressed. Incidental landscape and property damage were kept to a bare minimum. When we had questions regarding the execution of the work, the owner promptly explained them to us and helped to resolve them to our satisfaction. We do not hesitate to recommend A-1 Vinyl Siding for any of this type of work. The roof looks fantastic (with compliments from my neighbors), and the new siding on our chimney looks great.

Recent Review: Very well. This was our first siding project and involved the complete replacement of original, 37 year-old aluminum siding and gutters on a single family colonial home. It was also the most costly home improvement project we had undertaken. Andy Kondrath was punctual and knowledgeable in giving us a firm written estimate of work to be performed, provided photographic examples of his company's previous work, cited previous work performed in our own neighborhood as a reference point, and clearly explained the overall project, including materials options, techniques, and installation schedule. He was knowledgeable, respectful, and experienced in this type of work and on our type of home. We were reassured by the fact he does not use sub-contractors and payment would not be due until after completion of the job (with the exception of a $1K deposit). Andy also gave us helpful ideas and insights in selecting the colors and styles for the new siding and shutters based on the experiences of his previous customers, industry trends, and current home buyer preferences. Andy conceded he was not the lowest-cost siding contractor, but we decided that quality and value were more important than absolute price point. There were no high-pressure sales tactics and services were ultimately delivered just as promised during the estimate. Jeff Kondrath was on-site to oversee the siding work and manage a large crew, which finished the siding work as scheduled and projected (3-1/2 days for an all-siding colonial). Site clean-up was prompt and thorough. Separate, smaller crews were dispatched the following week to install gutters and a couple weeks later to install the shutters, which we color-matched after the siding was installed and which had to be special ordered. When one change was requested on the completed gutter work, the crew promptly returned the following day to add a downspout over a lower roof. The final result was an exceptional upgrade to the exterior appearance of our home and to its expected energy efficiency this winter, since the work also included new insulation being placed underneath the siding. On the last day the crews properly re-attached all accessories (e.g., exterior light fixtures, garage door keypad, electrical outlet covers, etc.). They also ran wires to the satellite dish under the siding rather than stapled to the outside of the house as before and installed new light fixtures and a doorbell button (which we had purchased separately to match the new siding's color/style). At our request, Andy also used stone veneer siding in the front porch area as an accent. The final fit and finish of the siding, gutters, accessories, and caulking were all excellent. One note of caution if you have siding work performed when landscape flowers, shrubs, or trees are nearby--cover or protect them during work. In order to access work areas, crews had to erect/move ladders and haul materials over, around and through landscaped areas, which took a beating. If you have a prize rose bush (which we don't), be sure to protect it before work begins. Fortunately our job was done in the fall and the flowers/shrubs/trees should come back just fine next spring.

We had a wonderful experience with Mulligan, our salesman Ron, was outstanding.  He spent many hours assisting us with color choices, and overall design.  He even helped us on his own time painting our gutters and shed doors.  The siding crew was great!  All work was done with exceptional quality.  They were the highest estimate I received, but they also were giving me the best customer service, and "that little extra" that made the overall price worth the experience.  Our house looks outstanding now!  Thanks Ron!

How much did the final cost compare to the original estimate?  similar How does the value of the work compare to the price?  Price is perhaps on the high side but, as with anything, you get what you pay for and we received quality work. How far in advance did you schedule the work? 1-2 weeks Did you find the company through Angie's List?  yes   Why did you choose this contractor? Ratings in Angie?s List Have you used this company before? this is the first time I've used this company What did you like most about this contractor? easy to work with, kept his word about start and finish time What did you like least about this contractor?  We originally entertained removal of our brick veneer but recanted.  We communicated in writing that our brick veneer was to remain on the house but Wes removed a small portion of it.  What surprises came up during the course of the work? A miscommunication meant that our trim wasn?t done in white as we originally wanted. What words of advice would you give other members considering this contractor?  Absolutely would recommend them but, as with any contractor, make sure you communicate all desired details in writing.  The results of any home exterior project is purely visual ? use pictures (worth a 1000 words) to communicate desired outcomes. What words of advice would you give this contractor?   Create quotes similar to those of other contractors ? include details of materials to be used, project timeframe, etc.

Overall experience was pleasant. I have to say the communication with this company was great, which is very important for me. Any time I called, I was able to speak to someone directly (owner or owner's son), or promptly received a call back usually within an hour. Since I was not there while all the work was completed, I consistently received calls letting me know what was going on, work schedules, and to discuss any concerns I had. Before any work started they came out to walk through the things they were going to do and answer any questions I had. On a couple of occasions, the owner's son Michael came out to discuss concerns I had, and was probably there for over an hour each time going over the work with me---once later in the evening, and once on the weekend. Never did I feel rushed when he came out, and working around my schedule was appreciated. From the street, the new porch roof & overhang look great---they did a good job with this, and the house looks great compared to before. The brick porch I had was previously built with a differnt color/style of brick that didn't match the house. Unfortunately, they couldn't put a stone veneer over the face because the slab at the top didn't have enough of an overhang. However, they were able to put on wire lathe and cover in colored mortar which was then carved & textured to look like stone---the color is not a perfect match to the house but not sure anybody could have done it perfectly. Regardless it looks much better than before. The new porch roof has a barrel shaped ceiling which looks really nice--you can see examples of other houses they've done like this on their website. I did have a few issues with some of the work done. 1) Roofing: They had suggested two types of intake ventilation as opposed to cutting new soffit vents: vented drip edge & the edge vent. I utlimately went with the edge vent but am concerned with the installation of this---not as clean as what I would have expected. When the original drip edge was removed, the orginal ice shield tore off enough that there was bare wood between the new drip edge and the existing ice/water shield. The edge vent requires ice/water shield both above & below. I called about this, and they came back and installed ice shield all the way around to cover the exposed wood under the vent and lay over the top of the drip edge. The drip edge they used was also short and didn't overlap the gutter or original fascia trim---they came back out to install aluminum trim to remedy this. If I had to do this all over again, I would insist on cutting tried & true soffit vents as opposed to this edge vent stuff. The aluminum trim around the frieze board, and the drip edge installation is sloppy---but I have been assured everything is functional and they will stand behind their work, so I left it at that. 2) Skylights: I had two skylights put in the kitchen. The framing at the top (roof deck) and the framing at the bottom (kitchen ceiling) were not sqaure to eachother---close to a 1 inch mismatch side to side. The drywaller was able to fix most of this, but there is still a noticable slope going up the sides. Since it is only noticable while standing directly below it and staring up, I let it go. Had I asked them to reframe it perfectly square, I'm sure they would have---they've been pretty good about fixing anything I had a problem with. Overall, I'm satisfied with most of the work. The timing to complete the major work was about 3 days, and they've been out to take care of some of the other concerns I had several times over the following 2 weeks. Each of the crews that came out were on time and cleaned up well when they left each day. The price was OK, but for what I paid I expected a little more attention to detail (clean trim installation/clean caulk lines)---nothing was glaringly horrible but at the same time it's apparent that some of the work was done quickly without a lot of thought. Based on their customer service, I would definitely recommend this company but would be up front with them about your expectations for attention to detail if you're a picky person like me.

Matt is pretty amazing.  He does most of the work himself and takes tremendous pride in doing it right (he will tell you he is the product of two perfectionist parents :-))  You can be assured that he will do the best job possible and pay attention to every detail. The flip side of that is it takes him a long time to complete a job, but it is worth every minute. You can also count on Matt to keep the disruption to your home to as little as possible and he also takes care to clean up after himself every day. The work in my kitchen is amazing! Matt isn't afraid to make suggestions along the way in terms of design (he has a very good eye - so I would recommend hearing him out). We didn't do a lot in that room, but it looks like a new kitchen and it fits with the age and style of my house. I couldn't be happier. The hall bathroom was transformed! Seriously, it was such an ugly, dated bathroom, and it now looks clean, fresh and very well designed. To keep costs down, I had the tile surrounding the tub and the tub itself re-glazed, but replaced everything else. Everyone who has seen it is blown away by the transformation. My master bathroom is quite small compared with today's newer bathrooms, however since I couldn't change the footprint, Matt worked with me to create a very unique and functional bathroom.  He was creative in coming up with solutions to some unique problems he encountered in this room and even seemed to enjoy the challenge, so I have to give him kudos for that!  He handled them much better than I ever would.  I could go on and on about how happy I am with the results of the renovations Matt did for me.  You can also count on him to take care of any unforeseen problems and come back without complaint to make any little issues right.  If you are considering a renovation and Matt's schedule is open to accommodate you - I would highly recommend him - he is very skilled and definitely isn't one of those contractors that have given the profession a bad name - actually, he has restored my faith in contractors being not only skilled, but very ethical.

Mr Lombardo was pleasant to deal with, respected that I work in my house and avoided noise level near me as much as possible.  He contacted me to arrange a good time and was here on time.  He even cleaned up after himself really well.  All in all a pleasure and good value for my money.
