We had a water pump fail on a Radon water system in our rental house. I called CZ Plumbing and they went out to take a look. They diagnosed the water pump as having failed. The quoted me a price on a replacement pump of 787.00 dollars. I thought that was high, so asked them for the pump specs and looked online and was seeing pumps in the 500 dollar range. I questioned them about this and they said they bought from a reputable dealer that would stand behind the product. It was at this point that I should have said, "no thanks". But I wanted to get it done, and they said it'd be a quick install, so I told them to go ahead. I got a call when they completed the job and they quoted me a total cost of 1189.00 dollars! I asked them how much labor was involved and they said one hour for the initial call and one and a half hours for the installation. I asked them their rate and they said 69.00 dollars an hour, and there were two of them on the job (138 an hour!). Replacing a water pump doesn't strike me as a two man job, nor does diagnosing the failed water pump. On the initial call, I believe all they had to do was say, "yup, it's broken" and divert the water flow using existing valves, and order a new pump. Hardly a two man job for an hour. And replacing a water pump doesn't strike me as a two man job either. I questioned him about this and he said they worked more efficiently as a two man team. I can't believe if there were one man working that it would have taken more than 3 hours to swap out the pump. I didn't want to argue with the guy, because he seemed to have a lot of practice answering these types of questions. Angry at this point, I texted the tenant and asked him how long they had been there. He said, "an hour or less". After this experience with CZ Plumbing, my feeling is that their primary focus is on extracting as much money out of their customers as possible. By my calculation, with one man on the job, and a 30% markup on a 500.00 dollar pump, the job should have cost 820.00 dollars.
