Recent Review: Putting in a new furnace takes days. These guys were a pleasure to have around my house for that time. They were very tidy in the removal of some very nasty old equipment. I did have some problems with the water heater tank. They took care of it that week in 2008. I had another issue with the tank in 2011 and they were right there and took care of it with a pleasant attitude and professionalism. Everyone has always been super nice, even when I kept going into the office because I did not understand the statements with my oil payment plan. Very professional. I did business with the Hallowell Maine office.

Midnight Oil Burner Service
Recent Review: Midnight Energy rep was very helpful in providing pricing for multiple alternatives including replacing just the oil tank, replacing the furnace with a new oil furnace, or replacing the furnace with a new propane furnace.  They were patient in answering our questions as we worked through our decision process and cooperative when we switched directions part way through the process. Their pricing was better than several other company quotes. They started the job as scheduled, but over the course of a week did not return to complete the work even though they had scheduled specific dates with us.  We called and left multiple messages to try to find out status as we were in town only for a few days, but did not receive return calls. We later found out that our rep had left the company in the middle of the job and that may have been the reason for the non-responsiveness at that time.  The company was slow in reaching out to us and letting is know what was going on. Once the company had assigned a new rep, they completed the job per the contract, but it was several weeks before final punch list items were complete.  The system works well and has been very reliable during its first winter.

Randy Sprague Heating & Plbg
Recent Review: The installation process progressed very well. Randy Sprague carefully reviewed my requirements with me and recommended a gas and an oil system that would satisfy my requirements. I chose the gas system because it was the most efficient, quiet and compact. However, it was also the most expensive of the systems I considered. (I received estimates and recommendations from more than one contractor.) Upon signing the contract, I received proof that the contractor had liability insurance from his insurance agent and useful information about Maine contract law. Few contractors provide such detailed information up front in my experience. Most of the new heating system was assembled on a wall board at the contractor's shop. The installation took two days. On the first day of installation, the new components were put in place but not connected to the existing heating and tap water system. The oil burner continued to heat the house and tap water until the second day. Most of the oil was carefully removed from the oil tank. On the second day, the oil burner was shutdown and disconnected and the new system connected. This process left the house without heat for about an hour. The oil burning system and oil tank were removed without incident. Do ensure that the contractor is licensed and able to remove oil properly. An oil spill can be very costly to clean up. Some adjustments were necessary to ensure that the existing programmable thermostats would work properly with the new system and the tap water temperature was appropriate for my existing dishwasher. The contractor resolved issues promptly. I am very pleased with the operation of the new system. Do check your dishwasher's manual for the required tap water temperature and ensure that the hot water temperature is appropriate. Do check the operation of your thermostats and refer any problems to the contractor. These new systems are very sophisticated and require and quot;tweaking.and quot; Randy Sprague's people were made aware of issues and resolved them promptly. The contractor also coordinated the installation with the gas supplier. This coordination is very important. Do select your fuel supplier early and start the coordination process to avoid delays in the installation.

CThe Breathable Home
Initially, it took a lot of time to get everything set up. A lot of back-and-forth emails and voicemails. I was probably as much at fault as the contractor on that one. I was taking advantage of the Efficiently Maine grant that was available at the time. After having the initial energy audit done, I sat down with Bo Jespersen to discuss what work my house needed and what the anticipated energy savings would be from each one. There was a lot of pressure to install a new hot water tank to replace the on-demand system I had in place. This was supposed to amount to significant energy savings. After looking at all of the options, I agreed to the new hot water tank and the final weatherization contract had anticipated energy savings of close to 40%. Now, I am not naive and did not expect to realize a 40% saving, but I did expect the savings to be noticeable. After 2.5 years, the savings are minimal to nonexistent. What little savings I do see can probably be attributed to the programmable thermostats. On the plus side, the crew working on my house were always on time and pleasant. At the end of the work day, they were excellent about cleaning up their materials and supplies. At the completion of the job however, there was some caulking that had gotten on the floors and walls that I needed to clean up. The work in the attic also led a small crack in the ceiling in one of the closets. The clothes in that closet were covered in plaster and quot;dust.and quot;
