BILL & SONS PLUMBING & HEATING
Recent Review: I found the pump was not working about 4 pm on a weeknight. Called them and got a call back within 30 minutes. They were on another job about 30 miles away. They got here about 5pm, diagnosed problem. They had to go back to their shop to get a replacement pump which they did and were back in about 45 minutes with it and installed it. It has worked fine since. Mike Lento who is the owner has always responded quickly to emergency calls at any time I have called him. He has done other work for me including a shower installation that required building a new wall for the shower. Scheduling jobs can be a bit of an issue sometimes but he is always there when you really need him.

FMcClean Plumbing and Heating/Ashton McClean
TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE START TO FINISH. 1. Personality: angry, unapproachable, unable to have conversations about work/project. Scoffed at my questions and concerned. Not responsive to concerns. When told there was a sewage leak that he'd created into the basement, he didn't bother to respond at all. 2. Installed a new furnace that broke down repeatedly throughout the winter, finally fixed it in February after a freezing winter here. My contractor Steve Reddy, who had brought Ashton on board, told me he didn't see any solution other than withholding pay from Ashton to try to get Ashton to do the promised work here. When that failed, Reddy told me to pay Ashton in full, and then Ashton worked in my house with such hostility that we were on a "nonspeaking basis". It was sheer h***, living in my house and having an angry silent guy I'd paid to do the plumbing/heating come storming in and out whenever he felt like doing so, with a contractor who couldn't manage the situation, and since I'd already paid Ashton and was told no plumber would be willing to take over for him, I felt completely stuck, held hostage, by the two of them (the contractor Steve Reddy and Ashton McClean). 3. New furnace has been deemed too small for the requirements of the house, by various heat specialists including one that Ashton brought over himself for assessment (but Ashton didn't tell me the guy recommended a larger furnace; instead, he just tried to charge me $100s for the unsolicited "heating assessment" visit). 4. Installed wrong size plumbing lines such that water pressure & flow is too low in the master bedroom and in the kitchen. The lines are embedded in granite walls so cannot be redone. 5. Radiant heat he installed is a bad joke - sent his lacky over at 8pm in the eves to pound away in the basement for a few hours, every week during late winter (no heat through most of the winter). Keeping me awake and ruining my life. Installed incorrectly - does not cover entire areas of rooms so there are sharp contrasting cold and hot spots. He cut corners on the metal plates such that they aren't the right size, and installed heating pex tubing about a foot lower below floor level so it doesn't heat the floor effectively or efficiently. 6. He broke a sewage pump, didn't know it, in August... and then raw sewage poured in through the wall of my basement - where my laundry room and cats are - and didn't care, didn't respond to emergency messages about it. I noticed water in the basement for months during the fall and mentioned it many times; he never bothered to investigate even though he was the only plumber here and should have cared about this. When it was finally discovered that the outflowing wastewater (toilets, showers, baths, etc) was all pouring back in through the basement wall, Ashton didn't answer text, phone, or email messages. He only finally answered a message of mine when I added that the sewage leak meant there'd be a financial consequence. 7. He complained all the time about how rotten his other customers are, whining about how they "don't understand" how busy he is. He seemed too tired to keep his eyes open most of the time, and angry all the time. 8. Rarely available - he put together the new furnace and pipes associated with that, and the workmanship itself looks good. The rest of his workmanship was poor or nonexistent, and I was rarely given a moment of his time to talk about the work needed. He had no interest in what I actually wanted here, and I was too naive to know that I could fire him early on and look for someone else (my contractor Steve Reddy told me specifically many many times that I would never get another plumber or heating guy to work here, if I fired Ashton - this was untrue but I didn't know this at the time). Overall, I'd say that McClean and my contractor Steve Reddy (at the time) took advantage of me because I live alone, am a single female. If a man were living here, or someone who had had ANY experience with home-ownership or remodeling before (I didn't), they could never have gotten away with what they did - and didn't do - here.
