Recent Review: Going with JP General Construction was a bit of a leap of faith as most of the reviews on Angie's List are for smaller jobs, but I could not have been happier with Mr. Peredo and his crew's work. After getting estimates from several firms who'd reviewed the plans from my structural engineer, his bid for the work was very fair -- not the cheapest, but more than $15,000 less than the much larger firm which had been the runner up. I'd note that the work at my house was so complex (replacing the entire foundation of the house from the inside) that two of the firms I interviewed wouldn't even bid on the work. Mr. Peredo immediately knew how to best execute the engineer's plans and he quickly demonstrated his construction knowledge when he found that the structural engineer's plans needed to be modified in order to safely and more effectively complete the repairs. The engineer, on two separate occasions agreed with Mr. Peredo's plans and offered to redo the drawings. First, he recommended doing the demolition of the existing shelf footers in a more conservative but time consuming way and second, he recommended using a single steel I-Beam, instead of two separate sections, even though the larger steel I-Beam was much tougher for his crew to put into place. In the end, I have no doubt that Mr. Peredo's proposed improvements resulted in a more structurally sound final product. A crew of four showed up every day, worked their butts off all day, and the worksite was organized/cleaned daily. Until the new walkout was finished, the crew had to walk through my house to get to the basement/bathroom and put down dropcloths to keep out hardwood floors as clean as possible. There were seven or eight different Arlington County inspections required throughout the process and we passed with flying colors each time. On one of the more complicated phases of work, one of the inspectors stayed for over an hour taking different measurements and scrutinizing the work. I'd note that I had a terrible experience with a contractor on a different project (sued and won a judgement against him), so Mr. Peredo was OK with my structuring an extremely tight, specific contract with corresponding schedule of progress payments. I'm a tough customer (especially when I'm spending a lot of money) and, much to the chagrin of my wife, scrutinized his team's progress as soon as I returned from work every day for a month. Just terrific on all fronts.
Recent Review: It went very well. They are very knowledgeable. Very easy to work with. They had a pretty quick turn around response in terms of the initial meeting to providing the necessary information needed.

Recent Review: He is pretty good, overqualified to PhD. He is just very knowledgeable. When I was looking to remove a wall to open up a rump, so he had to look at the bearing structures and he gave me a design what would be required for the beam and all of that. I was impressed. He was professional. Price wise, I contacted six different people and he was about half of most.

AKemp Home Inspections, LLC
I called Kemp Home Inspections for an evaluation of the crawlspace under my home built in 1932. Jill, structural engineer, arrived on time for the evaluation and reduced my anxiety by explaining how the inspection process would work. She inspected the living space first to look for any indications of structural problems; using laser technology to detect any slopes in the floors. She inspected around the perimeter of the house and then went into the crawlspace. She was very thorough and the entire process took 3 hours. Jill went over all of her findings with me and explained possible remediations. I received her report a few days later. It was excellent- clear and easy to understand. Jill was very knowledgeable and personable and I really enjoyed interacting with her. I highly recommend her!!!

Robert was highly recommended by an architect friend to consult on a foundation issue. He assessed the situation, walked us through his recommendations for repair, and drew up the plans to be used by the contractor. Additionally, he spoke with the county permitting office when we hit some roadblocks with the permit, and agreed to meet the county inspector (at the inspector's request) to review the work upon completion. Robert is very personable, professional, and able to explain complex engineering work to laypeople.

DLouis & Associates LLC
Louis was easy to schedule and was at the house within a week of me calling to schedule the inspection. Louis performed the inspection, relying on me to point out areas of concern and then taking some brief measurements and photos. However, he could not diagnose a main area of concern in second floor joists due to no access to joists either from above or below, and did not provide a solution or a diagnosis despite being paid for analysis. His visit was a turning point in the quality of service. His report was substandard. He did not properly document all needed repairs, and what he wrote in the report differed from what he mentioned in person regarding a failing floor joist. Multiple attempts were made to contact Louis by phone with voicemails and by e-mail to clarify discrepancies between the report and comments during his inspection, but he failed to communicate back to me. Overall, this service was not worth the $500 that it cost.

Working with Greg Kemp and Kemp Home Inspections was fantastic. We are selling our home, and the buyer's home inspector noticed some cracks on our foundation. Of course, everyone (including me) freaked out. We hired Greg to come do a structural inspection because he is a certified professional engineer. I had some foundation contractors come out before Greg and of course they all told me the house needed over $50k in work done (despite being a fairly new house), clearly just trying to sell me the most expensive solutions in their arsenal. Greg came and literally saved the day. He did a thorough inspection inside and outside the home. He checked every inch of the foundation, and discovered there were no big issues that would cost us a fortune. Greg talked me through what he was doing, what was what on the foundation, and potential solutions. He emailed me a formal report the same night that we were able to pass onto our buyers. We were prepared for bad news, but I'm glad Greg didn't have to give us (or the buyers) any. Greg was an all-around nice guy to chat with and had a lot of information to offer. I was able to schedule the appointment fairly quickly, with no hassle. I will definitely recommend him for all of our (and anyone else's) home inspection needs in the future, not just engineering related.

FADE HOME INSPECTIONS
Mr. TM KIM reported to the property and spent an hour on the inspection on Thursday. He was advised prior to scheduling the inspection that the report would be needed asap since we are in the process of purchasing home. He advised that he would make a copy and fax/email it to the real estate agent by Friday. Friday came and no report. He had mailed the report. When asked he stated that we should have via mail by Saturday. Saturday no report. Finally get an email copy of the report on Sunday. It was a three sentence report with no pictures and no remedies. So I call first thing Monday and ask about pictures and a more detailed report. He was very hostile from the very beginning. Worst customer service ever!!! This person is a sham!. DO NOT USE....YOU WILL BE SORRY. What kind of "engineer" does an hour "inspection" and only provides a 3 sentence inspection report. Then when you call states that its not his job to educate you on engineering. And if you want to pay more then he can right a better report. CALLS THE CUSTOMER AN IDIOT...HANGS UP PHONE... I have reported him to the BBB and will also go to the licensing agency.
