Recent Review: Two workers came promptly at 7:30 am, the scheduled time, and were here until about 1. They checked out the current panel and realized there was not enough room for the charger on there so recommended the installation of a sub-panel.  Moved some of the circuits that were carrying lesser loads to the subpanel and put the car charger on the main panel. There is a bit of snow outside so they used shoe covers and tarped the basement floor.  They worked very carefully and explained all the work that needed to be done.

Recent Review: First, the good: The designer was very responsive to my needs.  We worked together to get a proposal put together for exactly what I wanted.  And in the end what I had was exactly what I wanted for exactly the price quoted.  The finished result looks great and functions as expected. What I had done: I've got an electric car coming in a few months, and I wanted the charge port installed during the summer months.  We had some back and forth by email about exactly how to install this circuit.  There were some complications because our standby generator, intended to power the whole house, isn't rated for the whole house plus the new car.  There's another big positive here, though  First, Keyes did the leg work to figure out whether generator overload would be a problem or not (unprompted).  Second, they proposed an initial solution (disable the car charger circuit any time the generator is running) but also did the leg work to figure out whether our generator installer could do something better (disable the car charger circuit only when the generator is overloaded).  They could have made more money here on an inferior solution.  Instead they recommended that I have the generator company install the better solution after Keyes finished their work.  Bravo for that. Unfortunately, this took more visits (5) than either I expected or the estimator expected.  On day 1, they pulled the data lines (incorrectly) and fished the high voltage line under the breezeway.  One day 2, they ran the inside wiring to the breaker box and wired it up.  On day 3, the did the in-garage PVC work.  Each of these were full days.  A partial day 4 was spent fixing the data terminations, and day 5 was the inspector.  It wouldn't be a problem that it took 5 visits, except I felt I need to be there to supervise the work, so I worked from home on 4 of those 5 days.  I would have been fine with 2 work from home days. Part of the problem here was an estimating problem, but the bulk of it was a logistical/supplier problem.  Day one had a problem with the conductor they brought out (the jacket was cut).  On the bright side, they didn't just install dangerous product.  But getting replacement conductor slowed them down. Instead they ran the data lines that day.  But none of the 4 circuits were properly terminated, which meant a later followup day.  When they finally fixed up the data lines, they used my test equipment to verify the lines, because theirs was 75% broken (with 4 terminating test pieces, 3 of the 4 were known by the technician not to work).  The test equipment in question costs $120.  They use pretty much the same tool I do, it's just that they have to run back and forth for every line they check. Another stall happened when it was time to install PVC conduit in the garage.  The corner pieces were just never ordered for the job.  It took the better part of 45 minutes just to figure this out.  Ground to a halt by pieces that cost, what, around a dollar?  This time they sent a runner for the part, but it held up the work for a few hours. These mis-steps on the logistic and execution side made the job take longer, but the job was eventually completed as requested and expected.  I'm happy with the end result.

Recent Review: Overall it was a good interaction. I was inquiring an outlet installation for me to be able to use for my electric car. They did not perform this service, after all. This company was recommended by dealer of electric car, they don't have any electricians on site to my understanding, it seems to be subcontracted out. I found them to be overpriced for the service compared to competitors. They were trying to find out other prices I'd been offered. They thanked me for my call and wished my luck, were polite, and respectful. I would not use them in the future due to pricing.

I called to ask whether this was something Bill had done in the past. He answered the phone immediately. Told me his prior experience. Agreed to come by the following day to evaluate our needs. He showed up at precisely the time promised. He was refreshingly honest when he said that this was not a difficult job. Bill followed up with his supplier about pricing a unit. Provided a written estimate promptly. Was cheerful when we decided to buy an alternate unit. Researched the electrical needs of that unit before arriving to do the work. Showed up on time, completed the installation promptly, charged the estimate, which was very reasonable and much less than we had been led to expect by Nissan. Bill has become Nissan's go to electrician for these installations.

DLoughlin Electric Inc
I found Loughlin Electric on Angie's List. Based on the good reviews I asked them to do an estimate on installing a charger for my electric car. I decided to have a dedicated electric service set up for the car so that I could avoid putting more load on my existing electrical panel and so that I could track costs. Accordingly Loughlin created an estimate for installing facilities for an second electric meter, running a 100 Amp 240 Volt cable through the home to the charger, and installing the charger itself. They also included a couple of small additional tasks (adding an outlet, etc.) that I needed done. Loughlin's estimate seemed reasonable so I agreed a date (Monday, 9/14/2015) with Ken Assad. He promised the crew would arrive between 8-8:30AM. I arranged a vacation day from work and spent the night before moving furniture, emptying a crawl space, etc., so that the electricians could work. At 7:45AM on the 14th they called and said the crew would be arriving between 10 and 11AM. A team of 3 finally arrived at 1PM. They messed around for about 15 minutes, then two of the three electricians climbed back into their trucks and left the third to tell me that they couldn't do the job because, "they didn't have the right stuff." I asked what this meant and basically got a shrug. I asked if they could at least do the small additional tasks, he flatly refused. I asked him, "What happens next? Can you do the job tomorrow?" and he replied, "we'll give you a call some time." Then they left. I called Loughlin and the person I spoke to said she'd text the owner. I never received a call back. In fact, I didn't hear anything more until an email came on Friday. The email basically said, "if you give me a call maybe we can try again." The following Monday Ken Assad did call from Loughlin but by then I had decided to go with another contractor. The whole experience was very weird and frustrating. I understand that things happen and sometimes workers end up running late but this was a fairly major job that needed the full day. I found the whole, "we don't have the right stuff" business to be decidedly unprofessional. In the end, though, what soured me on Loughlin was that it was impossible to reach anyone who could help me when the job went wrong. I feel that they should have called me to work something out before directing their crew to leave. I took a vacation day and went to considerable effort to prepare my house so Loughlin's team could work. When they drove away they forced me to put everything back, then take another vacation day and do the same preparation again for the electricians who actually did the job. There was never any sense that Loughlin was upset that they failed, that they wanted to make things right, or that they wanted my business. Their attitude was, "if you want to roll the dice again, we might be willing to let you." Rodenhiser Plumbing, Heating, A/C, & Electric ended up installing my car charger. They showed up when they promised and did a fine job. Best of all, they were always reachable by phone and email throughout the process.

Everything went perfectly.  From estimate to scheduling to the job itself, we had no problems whatsoever.  The owner and his electrician were extremely friendly and thorough, and the job is very neat and clean.  They installed the charger exactly where I wanted it.  They had some previous experience installing these chargers and it showed.  I would call Caron again without hesitation.

This is my second time using Northern lights to do a project. This one involved a service upgrade, anew distribution panel and Installing a electric car charger. All of this was done professionally, and the crew cleaned up after themselves. They showed up 15 minutes ahead of the promised time ready to work, and finished ahead of schedule. Inside they added a cable outlet, their interior work was clean and neat.

Everything went great. The guys showed up, made sure to be clear about where everything was supposed to be mounted and went to work.  The results were exactly what I had asked for and everything works perfectly. I could not have asked for a better job.
