Recent Review: We had Dave contracted to do four different jobs for us. See below: 1 + 2 We needed to have under the house insulated. This is a seasonal cottage that was built in 1930's and converted to all year living quite a few years ago, and major renovations were done on half the home in 2001 -- kitchen and bathroom and the house was extended by six feet, this section of the house was insulated back then, but not very well. The house has no basement, just a dirt crawl space. So the major project was to insulate under the older section of the house because the house was not staying warm in the winter and heating costs were outrageous.  We contacted Dave via Angie's List and discussed the situation. The house is rented to our tenant and he explained to us how much it was costing him to heat the place in the winter. Living room area only has wood plank floor, no subflooring and fiberglass insulation that had gotten pulled away from rodents and weather.   Dave originally recommended replace the flooring, add subflorring and then insulate between the joists. That just seemed too extensive and would be costly. Then Dave came up with the idea of removing the current fiberglass insulation and plastic (no flooring removal necessary), Install screening ?barrier? along floor joists, blow in Insulation (apporx. R value of 27) and while he was under the home he would make sure the the duct work was all in place also to all the ducts in the floor. The primary goal was to make sure the place was insulated and not cost an arm and a leg to heat in the winter as it has been costing the tenant. So this is what Dave did for us. Looks good and seems like this will do the trick. But I cannot comment on the effectiveness of this portion of the project until Spring of 2014 to see how the tenant makes out with heating costs and if the insulation actually works. So I am holding on my final review until then.  3. Remove window, Install temporary plywood, have window repaired (tempered glass). This part of the project was mostly out of Daves control. Dave offered to help us out with this repair as it happened at the same time we contacted him for the insulation work. He gave us a price for the repair and had the window frame taken out ot have tempered glass installed. The glass place took forever to get it done, then, the glass broke while in their shop, they had to reorder new piece. So we were with plywood in a large picture window for close to 2 months. Dave was very professional at all times and finally got the window repaired and installed for us. 4. Needed new entry way and steps and railing installed to come up onto the deck. Prior there were stacked concrete blocks to step up to the deck -- not too safe. So Dave built something really nice and remove existing stair (pavers), properly graded the area area and install new pavers, build step with railings (constructed of PT wood). Came out really nice...added soem nice touches to the posts - -some solar lighting caps. Overall we were pleased with Dave's work and professionalism and of his crew as well. We would definitely call Dave back for additional work  we would need done.

Recent Review: Mr. Fixit and his assistant, Ana, removed the old fan and then scraped off any loose ceiling paint.  After he was done, I spent 2 days scraping off more of the paint using paint remover, scrapers and sand paper.  I was concerned about leaving mildew and mold under the new drywall.  After scraping off all I could, I applied a mixture of 20% bleach to the ceiling with a paint roller and let it sit for 15 minutes.  Then I scraped again.  I followed up with a clean water application also applied with the roller.  After the ceiling was dry, I sanded some more areas and spot treated any remaining mildew with the bleach. I had to purchase all of the supplies for the job myself.  This included a new fan, venting hose, a soffit vent, 2 4x8 sheets of drywall, drywall tape, wall compound, an 8-foot 2x4, nails, contractors' adhesive, anti-mildew primer, semi-gloss paint and more.  I had to borrow a friend's vehicle to transport the drywall to my house from Home Depot. The next time Mr. Fixit came, he was going to install the ceiling fan but it happened to be one of the hottest days of the summer.  The opening to the attic crawl space was at the opposite end of the house from the bathroom.  When Mr. Fixit got up into the attic, the rafters were not visible because of the blown-in insulation so he tried to lie boards down from rafter to rafter across the attic and then crawl along the boards.  After about 15 minutes, Mr. Fixit came back down from the attic and told me he was so hot that he thought he might pass out and fall through the ceiling.  It was probably at least 110 degrees up there, if not higher.  He said he would have to figure out a way to install the fan and the vent hose from the bathroom.  And he did!  He and his assistant worked through 2 holes in the ceiling to connect the vent hose from the fan to the soffit vent outside the bathroom window.  He then connected all the wiring for the fan and installed it into the hole he had earlier cut out.  He fastened the fan housing in place and tested it.  He had me put my hand out the window to feel the air coming out.  Success! The next time Mr. Fixit came to install the drywall which he managed with only one helper.  He taped and put on the joint compound and caulked around the ceiling-wall joint.  The next day, he came back to sand and touch up any low spots.  Then the primer was applied. I did some touching up myself (more sanding) and then applied the finish coat, an ivory semi-gloss.  Mr. Fixit had recommended a semi-gloss since mold and mildew don't attach to it as well as flat paint.  I applied a second coat of the semi gloss to a few sections where the taping had been done.  The job was complete.  The new fan is excellent; very quiet but it moves a lot of air (Nutone).  The ceiling is shiny and free of ugly green and black stains.  I'm very pleased.

Ended up doing a bit of pressure salesmanship before we were ready - would not give us a few days to decide.  Really kept pushing us to make the decision that day - and his estimate was over $7000.  Then he convinced us to just apply for the financing he recommended to see if we would be approved.  OK so we did.  Once he found out we would be approved, he pushed even harder to make the deal that night - stating that we had 3 full days to cancel the contract if we decide otherwise.  So hesitantly we did that.  After 24hours when we decided we didn't want to go $7000 in debt over this issue, we emailed him and let him know and he replied back all p***** off.  I will copy and paste his exact response via email here: Jeff Davis (Jeff@budgetdry.com) "I can't believe I just got  this email after I spent 4 hrs at your home I thought we were very clear on everything,your a very nice guy and your wife is lovely but after  this I don't even want your business..."
