Recent Review: Fred responded promptly to my initial call. He told me that he thought the job of creating the report and plans would amount to 4 total hours of work. He came to our house, made the necessary observations and explained his thinking. He then emailed me the completed report with sketches THAT AFTERNOON. Also, he only charged me for 3.5 hours, which I was very impressed with. We had discussed 4 hours, so there was no reason why he couldn't have simply charged me for all 4 hours. Overall, I found Fred to be knowledgable, efficient, and honest. I would absolutely use him again, and I would recommend him highly.
Recent Review: LARRY COTTON REFERRED ME TO ANOTHER MAN WHO WAS AN ASSOCIATE OF HIS NAMED MIKE. BOTH OF THE MEN ENDED UP BEING VERY RUDE, UNPROFESSIONAL, AND VERY UNWILLING TO WORK WITH ME IN THE END. BOTH MEN ALSO HUNG UP ON ME AS I WAS ASKING ABOUT GETTING THE INFORMATION THAT I HAD PAID FOR. I ENDED UP HAVING TO PUT A STOP PAYMENT ON MY CHECK BECAUSE I NEVER GOT THE INFORMATION AND GRAPHS THAT I PAID FOR ON THE DAY HE CAME OVER. MIKE ALSO SAID HE WOULD CALL THE POLICE ON ME AFTER HE SAW I STOPPED PAYMENT ON THE CHECK, WHICH IS ABSOLUTELY CRAZY.

Recent Review: Rene is Awesome. He met me at the property. We spent just over an hour. I had concerns about the structure of the house we were interested in purchasing. After having Rene come and see he confirmed my suspicions. He sent me a report 3 days later that was scary when reading about the condition. From there I forwarded the report to some General Contractors who gave me quotes. We ultimately decided to pass on the house. I thank Rene very much for report. I will use him in the future. I'm a realtor who always needs good people.
Recent Review: I was very happy with the results. The first iteration required a bit too much reconstruction in my opinion so we worked further and found an ideal option to insure the structural integrity of the project. I have found engineering firms difficult to deal with in the past. My experience with Roome & Guarracino was a positive one and I was satisfied with the value.
THEY ARE VERY EXPENSIVE AND ONE WOULD PROBABLY ONLY USE THEM IN THE FACE OF POSSIBLE MAJOR PROBLEMS. I FOUND THEM TO BE VERY INFORMATIVE AND GOOD WITH ANSWERING QUESTIONS AND MAKING RECOMMENDATIONS. THEY SENT US A FOLDER DESCRIBING WHAT THEY DO AND GIVING THEIR TERMS OF BUSINESS. BEFORE TAKING ON THE JOB SO WE WOULD KNOW WHAT THEY DO AND WHAT IT MIGHT COST.

AANNETTE DEY ENGINEERING LLC
The experience was quite good. Andrew responding to my request immediately and was quite flexible with scheduling (came that day). He is very professional and went beyond his call of duty, yet did not charge more. We wanted him to provide a structural assessment in our home that was first built in 1976 and then had some remodeling mainly because of steep sloping that occurred in the floor on one corner of the house. The sloping occurred where extensive remodeling was completed. Andrew was quite investigative and thorough in his review, even crawling in a small crowded crawl space of the home. He also removed ceiling tiles to get a view. All the time he was very professional in his opinions. In the end, we were quite satisfied with his approach and assessment. He was quick to turn around a summary e-mail of his findings as well. I would recommend Andrew and use them again, which is a testament to his work.

ASiegel Associates Structural Engineers
I am an architect, and I first worked with Siegel Associates about 15 years ago as a part of a larger firm. Now, as a solo practitioner, I work only with them for the additions and renovations I design. They are extremely professional, personable, and reliable, and I completely trust their extensive experience.

I found him on Angie's List; they had good recommendations there. They were great and I will use them again in the future.

Mr. Ayer was very responsive and helpful. He drew up plans and conferred with us about different options. He helped us choose a contractor by providing a list of names with ones he worked with and he checked their work along the way. He is a very nice person and we appreciate his help.

Mr. Mugnier's staff is professional, competent, and respectful, even accommodating a compressed timeline in our case (which may not always be possible). His structural assessment and plan for correction was conservative, but eminently sound. When we passed it on to the builders, and I asked if they thought it was the best approach, they paused, then said: "you got the opinion of the best structural engineer in the region, of course it's the best approach". Our primary inspector frequently asked, after pointing out a fault in the building, "what did Rene say about X". It is clear he holds Mr. Mugnier's judgment and opinion in high esteem. We didn't know at the time, but have since learned Mr. Mugnier is the structural engineer Boston turns to when it seeks advice on preserving architectural works. I have worked with structural engineers on two other occassions. Unfortunately, common sense, reason, and sound judgment are not always present the case in this "cover your a**" industry. Given that Mr. Mugnier's price is very competitive, and his work more thorough and comprehensible to builders responding to his advice, you have every reason to try to book with Mr. Mugnier first, if he is available.

My client needed a structural engineer to complete an affadavit of structural integrity for a foundation issue in order to close on the house she wanted to buy. This was an unexpected hurdle that the underwriter required. We did not have a lot of time to get this done. I had warned my client that structural engineers can be very pricey. Scott Nelson was excellent. He came out promptly, provided some additional advice on what needed to be done, provided the affadavit and actually charged my client LESS than what he had originally quoted. That never happens! I've added him to my contacts and know that should any of my clients have a structural issue I will be calling Scott.

FDavidson Engineering Inc.
I strongly recommend AGAINST Davidson Engineering Inc. (?Davidson?) of 241 Mt. Vernon Street, West Newton, MA. Recently we had the misfortune of using Davidson for structural work in our basement. The structural work was a closing condition for the sale of our house. The father and son team at Davidson caused significant delays in the construction and as a result our closing had to be postponed by five days and the transaction almost fell through. From the outset, Davidson refused to verify their design against existing conditions, and as a result committed design errors and omissions that resulted in delays and added costs when the design had to be changed repeatedly during construction. They gave our contractor instructions that seemed designed to create more work rather than to solve problems. For instance, they wanted a 2x6 partition ?narrowed back approximately 1 inch?, which was tantamount to demolishing it and starting over. On another occasion, they wanted a 2x6 top plate of a partition that was built to their specifications replaced by a double top plate, which again would have required the partition to be torn down and rebuilt. On both occasions, the contractor came up with much simpler solutions, which Davidson readily accepted. When I asked Davidson to produce calculations to substantiate their design or back up questionable design changes, they flatly refused, thus avoided having to justify their design. Moreover, Davidson refused to sign off on the affidavit required by the City Building Department unless we paid in full in advance. While we felt the fees were excessive, we had no choice but to pay them, lest they jeopardize the closing. The final numbers speak for themselves. The engineering fees for the construction phase exceeded budget by 500%! That?s right ? five times! The contract stipulated that Davidson should obtain written authorization from me for any budget overruns, but they never did, in blatant violation of their contract. This is one firm to avoid for sure.
