Recent Review: STA Originally came out in November 2013 to assess a roof leak that we suspected was coming in around some solar panels located on our roof. We just bought the home in August 2013 and after a major rain/wind in November encountered a leak in my son's bedroom; we suspect the solar panels are about as old as the home, built in 1978. The rep provided an estimate for the repair for around $300, but asked if we were members of Angie's List. When we indicated we were, he recommended that we instead purchase the Angie's List special for a roof inspection, indicating that as part of that the entire roof would be inspected, and the leak would be repaired under the inspection. The roof inspection was about $170, saving us about $150 to repair the initial leak and have a couple of other minor patches done around some flashing that they found needed addressed. After a severe snowy and very cold winter with a lot of freeze/thaw in late winter, roof leaked again in same location in Feb. 2014. Called STA, and they repaired again for no charge. However, with the old solar panels and location of the leak, this looked like it would be an ongoing problem and we considered just having the solar panels removed. After the Feb. 2014 repair, the owner of STA wanted to personally come inspect the issue. Phil came and took a look at the problem, and as part of that, I asked that he provide a quote to remove the solar panels and replace that portion of the roof with shingles. After looking around, Phil indicated that he could repair the leak again, but given the age and condition of the solar panels, the leak would probably continue to be an issue and recommended we remove the panels if we were willing to do so. He gave me a quote on the spot with a "gentlemans agreement" to complete the work next week on a hand shake and no up-front payment. The quote seemed reasonable and I agreed to the work, but did get an official quote on paper for my own peace of mind. $1,250 for the removal of the solar panels and replacement of the roof. The STA crew came out that following week, removed the solar panels, and per Phil's suggestion, also relocated an attic vent to prevent short circuiting of air flow in the attic to help extend the life of the roof (roof on entire house was only about 1 year old). Crew knocked out the work in one day, removed old solar panels, replaced that portion of the roof. Thoroughly cleaned up areas around the house after completing repairs and removed all trash from repair. Although leak eventually led to this more expensive repair, I agree that it was necessary, and was very pleased with all of the work, from the initial assessment/fix to the final repair, that STA provided. The removal of the panels and roof repair is backed by a 5 year warranty, and I have no doubt STA will stand behind it if necessary. After meeting Phil personally, I believe that STA and their crew provides professional, honest service with the customer's satisfaction in mind during the process. Based on my experience, I would highly recommend them for any roof work needed. While I hope that I don't need their services again in the future (except maybe an annual roof inspection), I would use them again in a heartbeat if needed.
