Recent Review: We hired John in the Fall of 2015 to work on our wood deck, largely based on the positive reviews we had read on Angie's List. In our initial meeting John was a good listener and gave us several different options to think about. Our follow up conversation included detailed quotes and a timeline as to when construction would commence when the job would be completed. John was very up front in telling us that he was not necessarily fast, but that his focus was on quality. This leads to the only negative comment I have regarding our experience - the job was over 2 months late in getting started. Once he began, John was on the job site every day and made certain we were up to speed on everything from permitting to workflow. We were consulted in every instance where a design decision was required. We were replacing our wood deck with composite decking, so there were minor design challenges with regards to support structure. John could easily have padded his bottom line and skimped on the structure but it really felt like his goal was to provide us with a great finished product. In the end, we finished the job in December. Our overall satisfaction with the end product is very high. Everything looked terrific except some warping/twisting of support posts, but that is hardly John's fault (look online and you will find endless threats about warping/twisting). The decking itself looks great and the craftsmanship and support structure make us feel secure about the deck going forward. We would DEFINITELY utilize The Carpenter's Bench in the future and thank John for his outstanding workmanship.

Rick Powell and crew (Steve, Jesse, Craig, Roger) did a great job! I am really thrilled to find a reliable contractor and will hire them again. They used good materials (mostly red cedar), and the carpentry work was very well done. Rick is good with communication and emailed me detailed and line itemized quotes and invoices. He was prompt with the quote and gave me a start date for the work--they showed up on schedule and did a great job of getting it finished, despite winter weather challenges. The whole crew was polite and checked details as needed with me as they worked (I work at home). I had a reference photo and they did a great job at matching the railing and trim and painting details. Rick came up with some clever solutions for the handicap ramp. I am really happy with the finished result!

Clean up at the end of the job could have been better but overall we are very happy with the work done and the professionalism of the crew. A nice group of guys.

FBoltinghouse Construction, Inc.
I called at the end of September, then Steve Boltinghouse came out and spent 20 minutes or so reviewing my needed work--rebuilding porch columns and rails and adding a handicapped ramp, looking at a sample picture. That part seemed to go well and was completely cordial. I gave him my phone, email and of course he had street/mailing address. I asked him if he used email and he said yes and gave me his email address. He said he was busy but said he would "do the work in October". I called 2 more times to try to get an estimate. Then about 3 weeks later he apparently called and left a message with estimate info, but for whatever reason, I did not get that phone message. That was it, he moved on to another job with no further notification--just that one phone call from him ever. I called a week later (I didn't want to bug him too much) and found that out. I was understandably a bit upset (I did not say anything nasty, just was pretty flabbergasted at his actions). He then told me he didn't have to work with "unpleasant" people and that he gets "100 quotes a week" so what did I expect. I am in pretty deep need for that handicap ramp for both me and my dog, so then he offered for someone that works with him to get in touch "maybe in 10 days" because he had just had shoulder surgery. Two days ago I sent him an email asking for more info, contact info for that new person, a tentative date. No reply. Today I called him, told him I had sent email, and he said "I never check email" and I said "then why did you give me your email?" (again, not in a nasty way) and he said "I don't need to work with you" and hung up on me. I have never in my life had such a "service" encounter. The fact that this posting has a flag about the phone number says it all. I can't imagine recommending. Now it is nearly November and it will be difficult to get this done before winter.
