Recent Review: Castle Painting is the one to choose! Not only were they the normaly on time, professional, did a great job, but Chris went way above and beyond what I expected. We had a closet door that didn?t close right and he took a piece of the baseboard home with him and shorten it so the right door closed. Then as he was leaving for the day, he saw the left side wasn?t closing either, and took the door down, removed the slot on the floor it fit into ?or was supposed to fit into? and re-engineered it. So now both doors close without any problems! He also fixed some broken trim we had. They caulked the baseboards, fixed all the ?bumps? in the wall, cleaned up every night before they went home, moved all of our heavy furniture? You are crazy not to go with Castle Painting! Price was right in line with the other estimates and we got more done!

Recent Review: I got Michael's name from a friend. He came out and gave me an estimate on the spot. He kept track of everything with his iPhone so he wouldn?t forget anything. He came back the next week to start the work. We loved what he was doing so added more work as we went along. He was very professional, and worked late into the evening to get the work done. Michael did a great job, was very fairly priced, and we enjoyed having him work in our house. We will use him again in the future. He really fixed up our stairs which were in pretty bad shape and now are terrific.

They are very punctual and very professional. The only problem I have is the way they charge. It's $85 per first hour, which is automatic, plus a $35 travel fee. After that, they bill by the hour (in 15 minute increments). The extreme focus on the billable hour makes them seem more expensive than they are. They should consider billing in 6 minute increments like lawyers. The extreme focus on the billable hours is strange as even lawyers are moving away from it. Nevertheless, they are very timely, competent and professional.

Great! The crew was prompt, professional, and rolled with all or our requests. We had a few days of rain delays, they restained/resealed a few or the decks because the rain came in so fast they didn't dry properly. They drilled extra holes in the landings where we noticed the water pooling. Julio offered to come back if we noticed anything that needed retouching etc.

AAccurate Home Repair
Todd Yeates arrived on time. Each riser and tread had to be custom cut to fit the stairway which has a slightly warped wainscot. The job was completed in a reasonable amount of time and was installed to excellent quality. I provided the materials which were commercial quality rubber treads and risers, which completey cover the stairs. The nails which came with the replacement metal stair edging that transitions from the floor to the first riser did not work on the floor. Todd came up with the alternate plan to screw them in with shallow screws. So he is able to solve those little issues that sometimes come up on the spot and leave a nice result.

AHandyman Matters Chicago
Everything worked well. Extra molding had to be installed at the top of the staircase in order to provide a solid support for the gate. Used white molding so it was not very visible against the white walls. Solid installation.

The art of correct stair construction is really fascinating and so important to safety and comfort in the house. We had both an education and really impressive stairs and railings when Jay finished his work. I have to say that Jay, the owner, is both an extremely exacting man coupled with a really cool artistic streak. He had to tackle the old stairs in our house which were not constructed correctly (now I know why it was so weird to use our steps as they were not made correctly and the treads were too narrow)...we were a bit resistant to replace the old balasters and railings but he was extremely patient while explaining why it wouldn't work with just a partial makeover, especially with the Craftsman style we wanted to go with. The other thing really great about Jay is that he worked with both our installer of our floors and myself in getting the job done. I wanted to save money and do all the staining and painting of the stair components. Jay not only supported that but dropped off pieces as he constructed them with good instructions on which were to be stained or which needed to be primed and painted. I thought he had a wonderful perfectionist drive which results in absolutely stunning stairs. I never even knew I could love a new design in the stairs...never even crossed my mind to change it but now anyone walking in to our split level sees Jay's expert design. We had a Memorial Day Party and most of the guests said it felt like they were walking into a completely different house. Absolutely the finest craftman you could get in addition to be being dependable plus just an overall nice guy to be around. I told him that he definitely uses both sides of his brain for the art and science of stair design.

APear Tree Construction
We hired Pear Tree for a huge stair conversion. We originally purchased our house with a spiral staircase and needed to convert that to a normal staircase for safety and convenience. It was a big project including cutting the floor joists, moving around electrical and plumbing, dry wall, and of course carpentry. The design Steven came up with was beautiful and something we would have never thought of on our own. They worked with us every step of the way to ensure our satisfaction and actually made a week of construction in our home feel painless! Their work was clean, speedy, and the outcome was fantastic! What a transformation! Thank you to Steven and the team for a wonderful staircase!!!

Dan was amazing. They worked with us to determine the best layout of the stairs & kitchen and then went right to work. The project was a large and complex one: pouring new a foundation for the new stairs (in a new location), removing the old stairs, extending the kitchen (and room upstairs) where the old stairs were, and building out the stairs themselves in oak and ash. The carpentry work itself is solid, and impressed the Oak Park city inspector (hard to do!). However, the crafting and finish work is particularly amazing. Dan hand-designed and created beautiful newel posts and caps, rounded the stairs as they met the floor below, and designed and built a neat alcove for art. The walls are done in old-style wainscoting - it's great. People that visit our house can't believe that the stairs haven't always been there: the work looks so natural, and fits the character and quality of the house. Dan also was kind enough to explain all of the work he was doing, and how each choice we made would affect the final look. I'd definitely hire him again.

FKENCOR STAIRS & WOODWORKING
They came out and spent a good amount of time measuring. There is only a small space for the stairs. I never got an estimate back from them and no one returned my calls. I assume they were unable to figure out how to build a staircase in such a small space.

AJUSALDA CUSTOM STAIRS AND WOODWORK
The owner, Remis, is a true craftsman and he does not have anyone but himself doing the work. The first time he came out he was on time and brought a book of photographs of his accomplishments. I was very impressed with what I saw, the reviews on Angies list and the reasonable price he quoted so I hired him. Remis showed up on the day we agreed to and on time. He completed the job in one day and was extremely tidy. I would most definitely recommend Jusalda Custom Stairs and I have already re-hired Remis to update our stairs going down to our walk out basement. We love our new staircase and look forward to having him come back, next week, for our other staircase.
