Business Description: B.Schultz Const.& Remod. is a General Contracting and Carpentry company. I deal with many different types of Home Remodeling projects. I have been 'in business' since the spring of 2008, however I have been in this particular field for a majority of the last 20+ years. When the project calls for it, I do use subcontractors that I have handpicked over the years. References are available upon request. Some of the jobs that I do are Kithen and Bath Remodels, Room Additions. Windows and Doors as well. All types of Interior and Exterior Trim and Repairs. Some Electrical and Plumbing projects. I am insured, as are my subcontractors. My estimates are free of charge. I try to estimate each project accordingly. Larger projects will usuall be a 'set price'. While some 'smaller' projects will sometimes be priced as 'Time & Material'. But I will always try to estimate each job as fair, and as accurately, as possible. Please feel free to call even if you just have a question.

Recent Review: The workers were able to replace the sink, the tiles, the flooring, and the cabinets. They even were able to help us find new appliances. The whole kitchen is brand new and I love it. They did a great job and as time goes on while my husband and I are working on the rest of the house we will definitely come to CHI Renovation again.

Recent Review: I first used Wiseguy to re-side my garage.  Happy with the great job and competitive pricing, I then hired Wiseguy to turn my three-season porch into an all season room.  Turned out beautifully.  Gutted, insulated, drywalled, put in pergo floor, 6 energy efficient windows.  I have a beautiful year-round room now.  I then hired Wiseguy for a complete kitchen remodel.  I am thrilled with my beautiful kitchen.  New cabinets, countertop, porcelain tile floor, back splash, tile base border.  Rocco has a great eye for detail and offers suggestions that, even though I am very particular, were well thought out and right on point.  All three of my experiences with Wiseguy were terrific.  I highly recommend Wiseguy to anyone in northwest Chicago and surrounding suburbs.  Kitchen, basement remodels, garages, fencing, decks, and drywall, are among many of the services they provide.

Recent Review: Our home is over 50 years old, so when we applied for a building permit we found that hard-wired smoke and CO detectors would be required and that led to additional electrical work on the breaker panel.  This added several days and about $2000 to the cost of the job.  We elected to retain a cast iron tub original to the house.  After the shower doors were removed there was discoloration underneath them, so we had the tub refinished, which caused another delay in the work.  Miscommunication with the plumbing supply vendor led to our purchasing the wrong shower head and subsequent plumbing issues, but Mike, project manager, went out of his way to get the right parts for us and to redo some of the plumbing that had already been done, including redo of tile work.  Joe and his partner were excellent workers and perfectionists when doing the tile work, carpentry and painting.  They were SUPER!  It looks great and we're very happy.

Design first did a great job with the design of our job, picking out of materials, architectural drawings, and completion of the job within a reasonable time frame. The scope of the work included creating a vaulted ceiling over an open floor concept that included a new kitchen, living, and dining space. We loved the work, with the exception of the newly installed wood floors had large 1/8" gaps between slats in many areas. I brought this to the attention of both the installer and the supervisor of the job who responded that it was normal for these gaps to occur upon installation and that they would get better over time. As it turns out, that is not true. Over time, the gaps worsened. The remodel included a 5-year warranty on the work, and to Design 1st's credit, they did send someone out to try to fix the problem and fill the gaps with putty, and refinish the floors. Once again, I had concerns that this was not a permanent fix, and that the gaps would be noticeable as the putty broke down. In less than 1 year after re-finishing the floor, all of the original gaps are back and the floor remains in so-so shape, as it was when initially installed. The wood floor was only one minor issue. The major issue had to due with improper ventilation of the vaulted ceiling. After a few years, we had noticed that during the winter months, the ceiling would start to show water spots in certain areas. As it turns out, it appears that ice-damming was to blame for the water issues we were experiencing. All this was discovered, due to Design 1st coming in to investigate the root cause of the issue. (Again, kudos to design first for trying to stand behind their work at this point) The problem occurred when I insisted that Design 1st was responsible for the ice damming occurring due to improper ventilation of the vaulted ceiling. (As a matter of fact, their was NO ventilation of the vaulted ceiling as no vents were installed under the soffit and the baffles that were installed between the joists were not joined front to back, allowing the batts of insulation to pinch off any airflow to the roof peak -if there was even airflow from the ventless soffits). Design 1st claimed the insulation was done correctly and that the roof was responsible for the ice damming. (In fact, ice damming is caused by improper ventilation) When I spoke with the owner of Design 1st concerning the improper ventilation of the vaulted ceiling, and evidence that moisture and condensation was evident in the entire living space that was remodeled, he simply stated, that the roof caused the ice damming and it has nothing to do with the improper ventilation. Knowing that I, my wife, 1yr old daughter, and 5 year old daughter were currently displaced from our home during this time, and wanted to get back into the house as soon as possible, he offered to simply fix the one exposed section of the ceiling and ventilate only the north side of the ceiling, rather than trying to properly ventilate/insulate the entire ceiling of the remodeled room. Knowing I would need to go a timely and costly litigious route in order to try to have Design 1st take responsibility over the ventilation issue, I reluctantly agreed to have them try to fix the north facing side of the ceiling and ventilation only. Here are the pictures of how they decided to ventilate the north side soffits. You be the judge on the qualify of workmanship and if you would want your house to look like this.
