Recent Review: We chose Georgetown because Tom was the most informative and helpful of about 6 contractors. (2 were recommended by friends) He explained things to me in detail and he kept our budget in mind the whole time.  Our final project is very different than what we started out discussing; but I love it!  We started out wanting French doors.  We ended up with French door sliders  due to  heating/cooling advantages.  Glad we did that! Tom found an Anderson door that I liked which was within my budget.  We really wanted maintenance free decking, but the cost was very high.  Tom was able to build a 240 sf deck out of Trex and all I have to do is hose it off to clean it up.  We wanted a pergola to keep the interior shaded and cool, so the pergola is made of aluminum -- also maintenance free.  They provided me with a CAD rendering of our project at no additional cost.  That sealed the deal for my husband!  It looked beautiful!  At the last minute, I happened to see a home where the pergola was at the opposite angle, and they were able to change it for me as well.  The crews came on time, did quality work and cleaned up well at the end.  They were polite and worked VERY hard, especially the pergola which had to be assembled one piece at a time.  When they left at night, they left some of their tools in a neat, safe pile, as we have a 7 year old in the house.  We opted not to have skirting around the deck and we plan to put a raised flower bed around it instead.  We wanted to put 2 light fixtures and 2 electrical outlets outside, plus 2 electrical outlets and a switch inside.  Tom arranged for an electrician.  He even had him fix a couple things inside the house.  (If I had known, I would have left a list . . . :)  )  I picked out the light fixtures and purchased them myself, but the electrician suggested where to mount them.  Good choice.  Tom and/or Corey came by periodically to look in on things and called me every day to be sure that I was happy with the progress.  I have never done anything like this before, and I truly appreciated their suggestions and expertise.  Things proceeded as planned.  I wanted the drywall to be a bit more finished in the dining room, so Corey had someone come out for that even after we made the last payment.  In my opinion, these guys are professional, ethical people who are interested in doing a great job.  I HIGHLY recommend them.  Some of the other contractors that we didn't use were not good listeners.  They wanted us to do things their way.  Tom asked me questions and then made suggestions, many of which were quite good and we adopted them.  Most importantly, they didn't try to pad the budget.  I gave them a dollar amount and they stayed within that budget. The material they used was beautiful and exactly what I wanted.  I wish they did patio work . . .   We plan to have them back next year to rebuild our old side deck.

Recent Review: We had an existing, oddly shaped patio in a very uninviting backyard. The space is southern facing, did not have enough shade, and no visual interest. Our family never hung out in the backyard, let alone entertained guests there. In addition to the strange shape, the patio was surrounded by an A/B pattern of bushes -- yews and barberry (thorns!), all grown together like some kind of barbaric medieval hedge. We'd lived with this terrible back yard for about 10 years since we bought the place. On our own, prior to contracting Poul's, we tore out the bushes to "clear the slate", and then we stared at it for awhile, trying to imagine what it could be. My imagination said "outdoor rooms", but I wasn't exactly sure how to make that happen. After reading the great reviews, I called Poul's to get a feel for how they would approach a project that I knew was going be a challenge. On that initial call, I could barely explain what we were looking for, but the person on the phone listened politely and said we needed to talk with a designer. So they sent Andrew to meet with me and provide estimates. Andrew came with a lot of ideas, patience, and enthusiasm for the project. He came up with a plan that entailed keeping but expanding the existing patio. He gave us options that reflected the desired budget vs the "dream" and patiently answered questions and "what ifs" until we got where we needed to be. He also discussed ways to phase in the project over time to deal with budget constraints. Ultimately we decided to spend more and get the project where we wanted it to be so we could enjoy it right away. We put off lighting for example, but went ahead w/ expanding the patio and adding a pergola. I'm very happy with how it turned out. Like others have written, our designer was professional, responsive, punctual, and knew his stuff. He has the skills of a landscape architect, but pays attention to the details, such as my desire for low maintenance plantings, and he thinks about what plantings are like now but also what will happen when they mature years from now. I know that should be a given, but I just want to note that he cared about longevity. He checked in frequently once the work began and had his crew redo portions of the paver work at his request, not mine, because he's a perfectionist, which of course is fine with me. He  took full responsibility for the quality of the work every step of the way. The crew was polite and from what I saw, they worked really hard. Once the project began, I never had any doubts it would be completed in a timely manner and that all details would be attended to.  There were a few problems, but that is to be expected with a project this size, and they were promptly addressed. A few of the pergola rafters were bowed. They were replaced at no charge and we were advised to hold onto the final $2k owed on the job until that was taken care of, which kind of impressed me. Instead of the pink roses specified in our plans, yellow ones were planted. That correction took a few weeks, but it did get fixed and the right roses were well worth the wait.  The old patio had some sinking pavers and uneven areas, which they regraded and fixed. The project included removing and reconfiguring some of the existing pavers, plus interweaving a consistent border around the new pavers and the old which makes  it seem like it was designed comprehensively all along. The beautiful transformation of the backyard has changed how the whole house feels. The "outdoor rooms" look amazing from the vantage point of our indoor rooms. I had my doubts about whether we'd ever be able to love our backyard, but we do.

Recent Review: Chuck came over to our house and gave us an estimate for an 8' x 24' pergola in our side yard.  He came with his crew to do the job on a Saturday morning, and by late afternoon we had a gorgeous pergola in our yard.  The workmanship was wonderful, and so was his crew.  Polite and friendly.  We are very happy with the pergola and have gotten many compliments from friends and neighbors.  They did a great job for a really good price, and I am one to shop around beforehand.  I would recommend him and use him again for other projects in a minute.

Robert from Silver Hammer rebuilt our pergola. He was very thorough in inspecting the project, explaining what needs to be changed/repaired and what does not. He followed up daily on the progress. He followed up diligently, stayed on budget and delivered an excellent pergola for us to enjoy. I would definitely hire him again.

The project went well. They finished in 3-4 days, as promised. The patio looks great. And, although we still need to finish the pergola (we didn't are doing on our own), Pete's design and recommendation of how to secure the pergola posts were great. The front porch looks great, too.

Successfully completed. Homeowners completed demo and removal of existing wood deck. The new deck is the same configuration as the old, except to add a pergola over an outdoor kitchen. Archadeck added outdoor electrical receptacles, a natural gas line, a ceiling fan, and step lighting on four sets of stairs. The outdoor kitchen will be completed later by homeowners.

FElemental Landscaping
BUYER BEWARE! I don't have any regrets in life EXCEPT for hiring Mike from Elemental. It was 2 years of constant lies and problems. We built a custom home, and we never had any issues with our contractors EXCEPT for Mike. We paid an incredibly hefty price for our landscape project and have had to fix almost everything. One of the major problems was the driveway. We wanted a 3-car driveway. Mike said he has done many 3-car driveways in Lemont. Little did we know that 3-car driveways aren’t allowed. We learned that he submitted different plans to the city than he showed us; thus, our driveway did not pass inspection. My husband and I had to go to countless Town Hall meetings to convince the board members to let us keep our driveway. Thankfully, they reluctantly approved it, but only after many meetings that spanned over a year. The board was so angry with Mike and his shoddy work that they said they wanted to ban Elemental from working in the city of Lemont in the future. He also told us that he would charge us exactly what he was quoted from the fence company. He ended up charging us over $1K more. Since he did not obtain a permit, I had to retroactively obtain one in order to get an inspection. Through that process, I learned that Mike paid much less than what he charged us. He refused to pay us back when I confronted him. He lied and said he charged the fence on a credit card (despite us giving him a check) and factored in interest. He also overcharged us $500 on one of our invoices. The math didn't add up. It wasn't until my husband got involved that we got a refund. He clearly has no respect for women. Also, he tried charging us $800 for a tree that we never agreed to plant but that he planted anyways. He's a scam artist. He used to have another landscape company, but it went under when he filed bankruptcy. He is continuing the same poor landscape work under a different name. He also does not have any knowledge of landscape design, ideal locations for plants, or proper planting procedures. For example, he planted our spruce trees so low that they are all dying. Two have completely lost all its pines. We have to spend even more money now to have them replaced since Mike refuses to remedy the situation. He planted Annabelle hydrangeas in full sun when they need shade. Almost all our plants died. One of the posts holding up the pergola Elemental built is sinking, our stones are separating and cracking on our porch, the pavers are chipping in our driveway, and worst of all, someone fell when they stepped on a loose stone step. There was barely any glue holding it down, and the grout was almost non-existent. We had to have this step and 2 other stones repaired so that they won't come loose in the future. The lower step was also significantly shorter than the other steps, and that did not pass inspection. When we came back from vacation, we noticed that Mike put a concrete color stone over our existing concreate porch, not the grey stone we were waiting months for. They had to come back and redo all of it. Needless to say, we have had to pay thousands of dollars to fix Mike’s mistakes. These are just SOME of the issues we encountered. Each day was a new problem when working with Elemental. He caused us so much physical, mental, and financial stress. I wish we never worked with him. My hope is that this review will save others from spending their hard-earned money on poor work that poses safety issues to them and their loved ones. There’s other landscapers who have been in business for much longer, who do a better job, and who don’t charge nearly as much as Mike.

ACOLLEGIATE LANDSCAPE
Collegiate was referred to us by Wasco nursery. We provided Mike a description of what we were looking for in our patio (dimensions, purpose and intended use) and our budget. Mike designed exactly what we wanted. His suggested materials and layout turned out perfectly. He was engaged throughout the entire project and made sure we were satisfied all along the way. His installation team was professional and conscientious. We are extremely pleased with the patio and would highly recommend Collegiate Landscape. We will use them again
