Business Description: Midwest Seamless Vinyl Siding Inc., has been a family owned business since 1963 and is one of the oldest siding & window companies in all of Iowa. In 1987 Mike Hutchinson became president after learning the business from the ground up and still has a very hands on approach to the daily operations of the business. He has seen a lot changes and many companies come and go. "I've always believed 'traditional wisdom says not to judge a book by its cover, but a home is a different story.' A home's exterior has a lot to do with its perceived value and because of this I have always tried to give great attention to details, workmanship, and the overall integrity of our products."

Recent Review: I orignally called thru a friend who recommended Porsch Siding. I needed new gutters and the entire house to be resided with vinyl siding. In 3 days an estimator showed up and gave me within 1 hour complete estimate of materials and expenses. After receiving the bid, it was very fair and told him that I accepted their bid. He informed he they were currently working on another project but hope to have that finished within 2 weeks. Sure enough, 2 weeks later they called and asked if it was ok to start on my house...I told them, "Sure!" The very next day two men showed up to my house and immediately started working. Within 6 days they were completely done with new vinyl siding and gutters. Looked great and all down spouts were placed exactly where I requested them. Perfectly smooth!

Recent Review: I had signed up for a siding estimate at the state fair.  Mac was the salesman who came to my house and gave a well planned sales pitch for their product and installation.  He was very knowledgeable, explained things very well, and answered all my questions.  There was one point where he used a tactic that I'm not too thrilled with, saying he would give me a discount if I promise to do 3 things: provide 3 referrals, let them put advertising sign in my yard, & I forget what the 3rd thing was (when Mac reads this, I'm sure he will remind me).  To me, if the product and service is as great as what Mac says it was, then there's no need to entice me with a discount in that matter, because those are ways that force me to give references instead of just automatically giving good references.  But keep reading, because the crew that did the work was AWESOME and FAST, and we watched their precision while they did the work, which pretty much makes up for the bad sales tactic that Mac used (when Mac reads this, I hope he learns something from my comments here). I work from home so was able to watch the crew, and the project manager - which was Mac the salesman - and I was very impressed with the speed, care, and work ethics of this crew!  Mac had said it was a great crew, and being the skeptic I am of sales people (plus sales people talking to a woman), I was greatly surprised that Mac had indeed told me the truth!!  There were 3-4 guys on the crew, mostly the same 3 guys were here all week, worked hard to take off the old wood siding & plywood, keeping the area impressively clean the whole time, and had a great attitude!  They started every morning at 8:00 am and stopped when it was dark (about 4:30-5:00 pm) when they couldn't see anymore.  There was the "lead" guy, Cesar, who was very meticulous about the details - I watched him several times and felt he was working as if on his own house.  The other two guys were great too, it was just that Cesar was doing the more detailed work of wrapping & installing flashing, etc.  It rained lightly off & on, on one of the days towards end of week.  The crew still came and worked in the rain!  Mac would call every day or stop by to see how things were going.  They installed the house wrap, 3/4" insulation panels over top the existing buffalo board sheathing, and then siding & trim around windows, dryer vent, electrical outlets, and added vinyl wrap (I think that's what is called) around the garage frame where trim would go.  After the work was completed, the outside walls were warmer than usual coldness due to no existing insulation.  But then we got that 20 degree cold weather, and all the outside walls were cold and our dishes in cupboard on outside wall are still cold, butter in cupboard stays hard as if in refrigerator, so that means the outside insulation didn't do all that I had hoped it would.  This house doesn't have any insulation in the walls, plus I need to spray foam between foundation & joists yet to see if this will help as well.  An electrician came by to ask where I wanted garage lights installed (on outside), front door light (outside), and a flood light installed in back yard.  I also asked if another light switch could be installed, not thinking of it as part of contract, but if I could pay them separately for light switch since they were there.  Mac didn't like that too much - he didn't get mad, just kind of perturbed - and I am new at this, so I didn't think it was such a big deal.  Idea just popped into my head while talking to electrician about light switches.  So I've learned a few things myself in this project and despite these hic-cups, I am quite satisfied with the experience, my new siding, and that it was done so quickly and so well.  Inspection passed by Roseville Code Enforcement Officer.   There was an additional charge to remove double thickness of plywood, which I thought was kind of an odd charge, since the whole house siding was supposed to be removed as part of the estimate, so a change order had to be done for additional $655.  Made note for self on next project is to ask about hidden costs such as when contract is to "remove old siding" - there isn't an extra charge because there was 2 sheets of plywood instead of one.  There went my discount for referrals and free advertising.  Also, they couldn't add insulation into 3-season porch but they did replace some sheathing and added the siding.  I had new gutters and downspouts installed by a different company the week before.  Craftmasters Remodeling crew was very careful not to damage aluminum when removing, placing on ground, and re-installing back the way all had been installed. I was able to finance this through a local bank which I applied through Craftmasters Remodeling.  Was a fairly decent APR for myself.  This allows Craftmasters Remodeling to get paid and hassle-free for both of us, in my opinion.  The local bank was one I had credit with before, which is a good thing.  The original contract was $15,385 with $2000 down payment (I could make any down payment amount), and $655 change order, for total charge of $14.040.  Against my better judgement, I did sign form to waive 3-day MN law where I can cancel contract but since I knew I was going to hire them anyway, I signed the form so the process could get started to beat 'old man winter' on its way.  The estimate, finance process, and job took about 8-9 days, which I was very impressed by, with no major glitches.  Even the dumpster was delivered and removed in a timely way, by another company, and placed in correct position where I had asked it to be placed.  I had asked that no one park in driveway, and no one did, except the electrician but it made his work easier when it was 20 degrees and bitter cold.  He borrowed my ladder & put it back when done, cleaned up after himself, and did a great job. Yes, despite these things, I would hire Craftmasters Remodeling for my next project.  I did do my research on this company and found many positive things on another website, Home Advisor, plus MAC had a huge book of positives from other customers.  BBB had a couple reviews, nothing that bothered me from hiring them to reside my house.  The reason for the 'B' rating in price is because I think it was still a little expensive over other people I had talked to, but they had the materials in stock, great finance APR, and ability to start right away that influenced me to hire them.

Recent Review: Initially, excellent to work with. Owner and supervisor plus one crew head provided initial consultation and estimate, helping us to choose the right siding and a color scheme. They told us what crew would work on our house and provided references to jobs done by that crew. However, when the crew showed up it was not the one we were told would be doing our job. Initially, we were told the job would take less than two weeks, but with our slow and careless crew of two, the job ended up taking all summer. Often, only one of the crew members would show up. Additionally, the supervisor rarely came around. When inspecting the siding ourselves, we found it wavy and with larger seam gaps than normal. Calls to their main number went unreturned. Finally, we obtained the owner's cell phone number and called him, refusing to pay until the job was done "right" (which meant level siding and tighter seams). Then, the gutters. Come to find out, the company does not do gutters; they subcontract. When ready for the gutters to be installed, the other company did not show until over a week later (leaving our house with no gutters during heavy rain which then seeped into our basement and caused damp carpet and mold growth). Finally, the gutters were installed. The first rain came. Looking out the windows, the rain poured down in sheets all along the house, running behind the gutters. We called Robison Siding's owner on his cell and told him to immediately come out. Then, he had to get in touch which the gutter company owner who sent out a different crew to correctly install the gutters. Additionally, gutter guards were included in our quote but not in the job request Robison passed on to the gutter company, thus causing another delay. Please note: final cost was higher than estimate due to the discovery of rotted framing on the chimney, thanks to improper roof flashing when the house was built. As a result, the chimney had to be rebuilt and the roofing near the chimney redone. This was done by their supervisor, who did excellent work. He also installed our porch railing and did a fine, efficient job. Too bad he didn't do the actual siding. Last but not least, when the first real winds came, the siding came off of one whole side of our house, requiring another call to the owner, who was in disbelief. Supposedly, we received the short end of the stick as they were doing a whole-house remodel in a neighboring town. In other words, the company was in transition and expansion with an inadequate, inexperienced crew. We received the two "left-over" crew members. All in all, they talked a good game but failed to deliver as promised and left a bitter taste in our mouthes.

Recent Review: signed in June but didn't get an install date until August. The install team was nice but nobody spoke English so we had a hard time communicating when we saw something we didn't like but had no choice other than to let it go through and try to deal with the PM after the fact. We are still cleaning up siding and nails out of the yard. The calk job on the trim was terrible. They dropped calk on the deck boards and left it to dry which made clean up harder for us. Windows were so dirty and smeared after install that you could have gotten a DNA sample large enough to do a background check. Had to get the windows cleaned. The siding was put up dirty from laying in the yard and no effort was made by the company to clean it up after hanging. The PM did come down and look at the punch list and have someone come to take care of if. Some of our complaints were that siding was applied with seams by windows and siding itself was not secured in several places under windows leaving gaps and sagging. Some was fixed. Some was not. Guess I will have to pay twice to have those items fixed. Never saw the PM again once the check cleared. By the way, who ever came the second time left us with a large heap of scrap in the driveway which we had to pay to have removed . Gutters were also installed. We were given one price for both gutters and siding. As soon as gutters went in we got a bill for that portion before the siding was completed asking us to pay within 30 days or be considered delinquent. Overall a very bad experience. Salesman was great from there its down hill all the way.

BJ B & D Siding Co of Iowa
I am absolutely thrilled with our siding job!  Although they were about a week late in getting the job started from the date we were originally given, they did call to inform us that they would be delayed. There were a couple of days that they showed up late in the day, and the job was almost two weeks late in getting finished, but to be fair they were working around some really rainy weather. They cleaned up any mess daily before they left. I was having a difficult time picking the color when I originally signed the contract, so he was nice enough to give me some local addresses of homes they had previously finished so I could drive by and see the colors to help make my choice. My husband was a bit skeptical about the insulation value, but after two winters with the new siding I can say that they were dead-on....our heating bill has been cut by 60%!! Overall, we are very happy with the product, the work, and the finished look. I would definitely recommend J B & D Siding.

DROBISON SIDING & WINDOWS
They finished most the work in a reasonable amount of time. After the windows were replaced most of the windows had the trim marred so we had to fix that and none of the trim in the sun-room would work so we had to spend days cutting, staining and installing the trim.  They never mentioned that we would have to fix and replace most of the window trim inside the house. We were also installing a deck off of the sun-room patio door after the windows and siding were installed.  We were told that the they would come back to finish the aluminum trim around a floor to ceiling window after the deck was installed.  They also had several other small finishes that they would come back and do then.  We made the mistake of paying them the final payment.  I called them several times about adding the finish on the window and other small items.  I received a call back saying they would come back soon.  After a few months they never showed after several more calls.  I contacted the BBB about them as well. We ended up having to spend several hundred more dollars to make all the finishes.

Initial interview was fine, Contractor JERIMIAH was a great salesman, giving us the impression that we would be in comfortable hands! From that point on, it was a nightmare Roofing team finally arrived after several weather delays, and other "delays" to them being somewhere else. The roofing was done well. When the siding "sub"contractor arrived, his "team" consisted of 2 per diem hires, his 12 year old son(?), and his "partner. Before even starting the project, his per diems left saying they werent getting enough for this house as it is 2 story. Almost immediately, we became that this "sub" was not in anyway experienced with the composition siding we had chosen instead of the vinyl siding we originally had. FIRST, HE PUT UP THE SIDING, before wrapping the windows, so there is now are gapes with weather exposure to bare underlying wood. The window wraps were "completed" with lots of glue and caulk, to disguise the major problems. The contractor (Jeremiah) did respond properly, when we called with our worries. When he finally came to review the work, he had already paid the "sub". Once he looked at the work, he realized how bad it was. He assured us it would all be repaired properly. The windoe "repair" team did do a wonderful job, when they were here. The never arrived before 11am, and 3 times didn't show up at all. AT NO TIME DID THE CONTRACTOR (JERMIAH) CALL TO INFORM US OF THIS) His return calls to us have been primarily to say "he was cash poor". We had paid the downpayment, as arranged by JERMIAH, and balance of fees will be paid when done,,,whenever that may be. We have resorted to getting a Licensed HOME INSPECTOR to do an unbiased inspection. His report not only pointed out all of our concerns, but found many more. His initial statement was the "work was done by an amateur. " The inspection was after a couple or windows had been redone by a 2nd team, however 16 other windows were inspected and shown to be done completely wrong as we suspected, and would not meet "CODE", and would never pass a "home sale" inspection. This is a plea to all who consider hiring this group to do their homework, as we thought we had done. We reviewed the BBB ratings and found 3 glowing reports, but as it turns out, were relatives and friends.
