CENTRAL AIR CONTROL
Recent Review: We decided to Central Air because they had installed the A/C for our new house and we were impressed by the knowledge and integrity of the employee they sent (i.e. he didn't try to sell us unnecessary services). Most A/C companies we contacted wouldn't do this work and the few that did didn't seem to have experience doing it and would have charged very high prices. It was somewhat of an ordeal scheduling the work - it required numerous phone calls. We employee was experienced doing this type of work and we were pleased with the result overall. (The person from a different company who came to patch the stucco around the hole said it was a good job.) The foam insulation wasn't trimmed on the outside (we hadn't checked before the employee left), so we asked them to send someone to trim it, which they did within two days. We also had them check our air conditioners during the follow-up visit and they were helpful and patient about answering our questions on A/C maintenance. We are thinking of having them install a whole-house dehumidifier and are waiting for a quote.

A-1 Interior Works Inc
Recent Review: Dan and Steve worked at my house on many occasions and I would not hesitate to call them back if needed for future projects. They do everything except tiling.  They charge extra for supplies and parts, of course, but only at-cost and provide a receipt. Dan redid the backsplash at no extra cost when he felt the job didn't go quite right.

When we met with Steve prior to signing any contracts, we explained to him that our mother was not well. We told him we did not know how long she would be with us and we wanted to remodel her home for her and allow her to see the finished project before she passed. We made it clear that we were dealing with a stressful situation and we needed to know that he could handle the job in timely and professional manner under "our" circumstances. We had concerns about each phase and how long it would take because we could not move her out of her home easily as he had suggested. We talked about this on several occasions and Steve ensured us that the project would take only about 8 weeks and he felt confident that he could work around our circumstances. He was very pleasant during this phase. Steve only has a small crew, something we did not know until we were well into the project. He has a partner, Ryan,  which actually holds the contractors license and then there were two other guys working for/with them.  The rest were subcontractors. The two employees that I dealt with the most were Mikey and Trent and they really were great. I dealt with Ryan on many occasions as well. They saw first hand the daily stress in our home with a dying mother.  For the most part, the work was good, but we had many many issues. For the price we paid, there should have been minimal issues. First and foremost, my mother passed before it was finished because it took him over 6 months to complete instead of the 2 that he said. The job was not completed until the end of September and our mother passed in the middle of September.  The first issue was with the engineer. He took forever. We asked for the final copy of the drawings before they submitted them to the building department. We did not get them. There were issues with the drawings and those had to be redone because of it. That took additional time. Once the permitting was issued, I spent weeks waiting for them to start. They would say they were coming and then never show up. I'd get an apology when I called mid-day wondering where they were and a promise to be there on another day. On Easter weekend, a month into the contract, Steve said he was going out of town because he needed a break from work and he would have us on the schedule when he returned. This infuriated me. How could you need a break when you haven't even really started? The demolition part was quick but then I sat with a house torn apart for a while again. Even the sub contractors sometimes didn't show up on time or at all. The electrician would come to our home later in the evening after his normal job. We found out midway through that our project was a side job for him.  There were multiple issues here as well. He didn't have transportation, he had to go out of town, he didn't have the right tools or supplies, etc. He would either stay for an hour and say he needed something and never return or stay until 11pm at night. We ended up having to add the cost of updating hard wired smoke detectors because they had no idea that the code had changed for the older homes and that was an additional $800. We failed inspections because the outlets were not the correct width apart. We failed inspections for the smoke detectors, and then we failed final due to the fact that the appropriate breaker was not used for the new smoke detectors.  In the end, when we were so furious over the inspections, the owner of the electric company came out.  He was really great but we found out at that moment that the owner of the electrical company had no idea they were even using his license for the electrical work.  Steve had spoken to him briefly in the beginning but never followed up to let him know he was actually going to use him for the work.  He was just as unhappy as we were at that time. When the windows came in, they were the wrong color. That took an additional 8 weeks to correct. Then they installed one window knowing it was cracked. That didn't get fixed until months later. We ended up having to add an additional cost for another window in the conversion as well because they did not know the appropriate codes for window heights for fire safety. That was an additional $1500 or so. The frames were also chipped so we had to get touch up paint for them. When the final inspection came, we failed because they missed a few screws in the installation process of the windows. The tile guys were friendly but they did not always show up as planned either. We had several issues with the tile. First we asked Belton not to install tile until painting was done because we did not want paint on it. They installed it and we are still removing paint. The floor tiles were installed and within a few days, the grout was coming out and there were loose tiles within a week. The first set of loose tiles were removed with a jack hammer which then dispursed dust all through the portion of the house that was completed. Ditto on the second set of loose tiles. The grout has multiple color shades as well. They blamed it on well water. Wouldn't this be a question they would ask if they know it could affect the stability or color variations? While we were told there could be some variation, we were not expecting everything from pink to brown and something in between. We have some tiles which still have small chips but we chose not to have them come back because we are just done. The cabinets are nice. However, we had issues with those as well. They forgot to place the supports in the lazy susan. So I spun it around and everything toppled out. The cabinet over the stove was where the pipe was for the range hood. They made a mess out of the back of the cabinet when they put it back resulting in a patch job. It looks ok but a new cabinet would have been better. When the countertop guys came to install, the gouged my cabinets which then resulted in them placing kickboards on the side instead of having to replace them which would have taken who knows how long.  At the very end, we were waiting for some other final inspections. We found that they had let the contractors license expire and then we had to wait for them to pay that before the county would do any other inspections. The list continues for issues with our experience and all we were ever given were apologies for the mishaps. They added an extreme amount of stress to an already stressful situation and alot of it was from poor communication on many levels. It came to a point that I did not want Steve to show up and say anything to me because I was completely angry with hearing one excuse after another.
