Business Description: Locally owned and operated, the Weathington family has been in the business of cabinet refacing since 1992. The refacing process radically changes a kitchen’s appearance by replacing door and drawer fronts and covering the exterior of existing cabinets to match. The refacing process is complete with new moldings, concealed hinges and decorative hardware. Homeowners also find it convenient that we offer counter top replacement. People choose to reface because it makes sense. If cabinets are structurally solid, then why rip out and waste the whole cabinet. Choosing from a large variety of styles and colors, a homeowner can achieve their dream kitchen with less time, less mess, and less money than having to gut the whole kitchen. People choose our business as a combination of liking us, loving our product, and appreciating a good deal to meet their need. It all starts with a free estimate with no obligation, and when we say,"no high pressure sales", we really mean it.

Recent Review: In summary, the quality of the finished product was very good. However, getting there was painful and time consuming. We finalized the plan and provided a 75% deposit on January 26, 2013. We just had the final walkthrough today, June 4, 2013.That means that a bathroom remodel required four months to complete which was projected to take less than a month (once the cabinets were delivered). Suffice it to say, this project took way too long. First the positives. The quality of the work is high so I gave Old City an A for quality. The tile subcontractor (Patrick Bennett) was meticulous and did a great job. I'd hire him in a heart beat. Another sub that was outstanding was Ryan Freeman who seemed to be able to do anything from framing to finish work to painting and drywall. We would not have been satisfied with the final product if it wasn't for Ryan's great work. Ron, Old City's Project Manager was also very good at resolving quality problems for us. He is an honest guy who did his best within Old City's crazy business practices. Michael's Plumbing was a sub we hired who also did a great job and was very accomodating. The negatives are many starting with the four months required to complete the project. Another concern is Old City's billing and collection practices. This was my first experience remodeling and I foolishly gave Old City a 75% deposit before they started work. I will never do that again. In the last month of the project, Old City's "designers" began calling us asking for the balance before they had completed the work. There was no agreement as to when or how they would be paid the balance and the "Owners" were allegedly pressuring the staff to collect the balance. Their collection practices are absurd and unprofessional. There is no way Old City should have been asking for the balance before the completion of the job, particularly when I already paid 75% in advance. The collection calls were persistant to the point I told them to not call me again until the "owner" called me directly. Surprise! I never received a call from the owners and they kept trying to collect. We did not pay until we were satisfied with the finished product. That said, we should not have had to deal with harrasing and unprofessional phone calls trying to collect prematurely. Old City also did a very poor job of documenting what was included and what is excluded in the price. There were a couple of instances where that ambiguity could have caused a problem. For example, there was nothing in the design that told the tile subcontractors how and where to lay the tile. We had to intervene and get instructions from the designer. Another example was that it was uncluer as to who was responsible for moving the shower drain. Ron the Project Manager did the right thing and agreed to cut the concrete to allow the plubmer to move the drain. However, the person sent to cut the concrete was not well equiped and did not cut enough. Michael's Plumbing (who was our subcontractor) got fed up and just did it himself without charging us.  The granite installers (unnamed subcontractor) were sloppy and unprofessional. We had to complain about poor quality and incomplete work to get the owner of the granite subcontractor to come out and see for himself. He was unapologetic and visably unhappy to be called back. In the end, they did a good job but we should not have had to demand re-work on a sloppy job in the first place. The first cabinet installer incorrectly concluded that the cabinets were not designed correctly to accomodate our plumbing so he just waslked away and nothing happened for more than a week. Fortunately, Ron the Project Manager brought in Ryan Freeman (super sub) he did a great job with the cabinets. I am still unhappy that the mystery owner(s) of Old City did not think enough of me or my business to call me personally when requested. Moreover, their poor business practices do not bode well for future customers in my opinion. In conclusion, the price was good and the quality was high. However, it took a lot of time, effort, and patience on our part to get to that point. If you decide to use Old City, do so knowing you will have to pay close attention to the details and hold their feet to the fire. If you are willing to make that investment in time, energy and emotion, you can get a good finished product.

Recent Review: Excellent job, was very happy with the results and I think the bath looks great. Had visitors this weekend who also was pretty impressed with the bath. I didn't respond to the price issue as I didn't even get comparative prices. I had used this company before and didn't even consider anyone else. The best part of dealing with this company is the willingness to correct any misunderstandings, if any. I have found them to be fair and honest. We are now planning our kitchen remodel, about 2 years from now, and will be calling Designer lifestyles when it's time to get started.

AHappy Homes of Jax., Inc.
Complete disclosure. This was the first time my husband Brian and I have ever done a remodel. We have learned A LOT. We purchased a home built in 1979 and there were several projects we wanted to tackle. We found Happy Homes of Jax through Angie's List and the reviews were solid. We contacted Marrell and he came out to the house to talk about our project. Marrell was professional, friendly and very polite. (This was very important to me; if I was going to be dealing with a contractor one-on-one while my husband was at work, I wanted to make sure I was comfortable with him.) We discussed TWO projects with him - remodeling the hall bath and the master bath. We could only do one at a time so that we still had a working bathroom. He carefully explained that his quote for the job would ONLY include the costs of his labor. It would not include any materials. This worked well for us because we planned to shop around for the materials as well as for great same-as-cash financing. Marrell provided us with his labor quotes and required materials lists. (We understood that other materials may be needed but the initial list was the bulk of the needs.) Marrell quoted us $9K for the labor for the hall bath and Brian and I thought that was a fair bid so we decided to move forward with the hall bath project first. The scope of this remodel was a full demo down to the studs, move the bathroom door, move the vanity to a different wall and install new drop-in soaker tub with tile framing. The only thing we didn’t do was move the toilet although we did still replace it with a new one. (We actually purchased ALL the materials we needed for this project, the Master bath project, as well as all the new vinyl flooring that we wanted put down throughout the entire house. We figured we couldn't risk just buying enough for the hall bathroom and have it be gone when we needed it for the rest of the house so we bought it all. This also allowed us to get better long term financing due to the higher totals.) Marrell began with two workers the second week of Feb 2019. He explained that at the end of every week’s work, we would receive an itemized Cost Sheet of what work was completed that week and how much would be owed at that time. We paid him weekly with checks as he does not take credit card. Everything proceeded as expected through demo and framing. The delivery of the tub slowed Marrell down but to no fault of his. (Totally blame Lowe’s on that one so much that I ended up buying my tub through Build.com – awesome experience FYI.) Marrell let one of his workers go so the rest of the project, it was just Marrell and his son Cody. It was about this point in the process that we started casually discussing the paint that we wanted when Marrell advised that painting was not part of the quote. This should NOT have come as a surprise because guess what? It was not part of the quote. It never dawned on me that the total I saw on the itemized quote would not include painting. The quote also did not include any electrical work that needed to be done. (Marrell did get a quote from the plumber that he subcontracts through so that charge was referenced.) I wish this was discussed more thoroughly at the beginning but I can only blame myself in not carefully reviewing the itemized list on the quote and questioning the lack of paint and electrical at that time. This is one key point I would want others to understand when working with Happy Homes. The quote is truly for the construction portion of the project. He regularly uses a plumber, an electrician, etc. and uses their services according to the project needs but the costs may or may not be included in the quote. I never met the plumber but the work was done well and all in one day. I was here the day the electrician came and we liked Jack and his work ethic so much, we hired him back to do a couple of other electrical projects we had in the house. Marrell recommended we talk to Angie, the subcontractor he uses for all his drywall mudding. He said that she also does painting. Her mud work was very solid so we did also use her for some of the painting we needed, both in the bathroom and other bedrooms. While the mud work she did in our bathroom and in the living room around the crown molding is superb, the painting was only mediocre and the edging is sloppy. She spent much of her time while she was at our house on her cellphone and we felt that many areas that needed attention are still not done. At this point, we have not asked her back to “finish” and would not recommend using her for paint work in the future. I cannot fail to mention that new flooring in the bathroom WAS part of our initial quote. Being a novice to remodeling, my husband and I did not realize how unrealistic our expectation was of how this would work. You can’t really just replace the bathroom tile without affecting the different flooring type in the hallway. When we talked it over with Marrell, we realized that it would make sense to keep going with the flooring. He provided an updated flooring quote to put down the new vinyl flooring in the bath, AND the hallway, the three bedrooms off of the hallway and the foyer and living room. We also saved a little money on demo since in the sunken living room, we were able to install the new flooring right on top of the old flooring. Marrell and Cody wrapped up the third week of March even with the extra floor project and their work looks amazing. The tile work in the bathroom is excellent, both on the walls and around the tub. The flooring looks great. The before and after pictures say it all. Marrell even helped demo the old shelves in two of my closets and install new shelves. Oh, he also hung our new front door too! At my request, he came back one more time last week to rehang my bathroom mirror horizontally instead of vertically. Needless to say, Marrell was flexible and easy to work with. Overall, it was a pleasure to work with Marrell and we obviously plan to use him again (as soon as we save up enough for the labor on project two!)

We are extremely pleased with the work that Designer Lifestyles did for us. Corey was helpful through the quoting process and making tweaks along the way. Lee and Keenan were the real rockstars with install. They were very professional, extremely hardworking, and clearly very focused on making sure we were pleased with the work being done. We also appreciated how respectful they were of our home, cleaning up at the end of every day (I even caught Keenan sweeping the garage once). We would recommend them and would use for future projects.

I am very pleased with the quality and professionalism of Marrell and his son! I needed my bathroom completely redone due to water damage and I was having a hard time finding someone who was not unprofessional or rude on the initial call for estimate. During our repairs we a death in the family and Marrell told us he would give us a week to handle what we needed to and he would resume repairs that following week. Not many people would offer that and the fact that he did it without worrying about the negative impacts it could have on his work schedule and especially financial schedule. They were very polite and respectful at all times. Their work ethics were definitely what I would call "old school" and very uncommon these days The job was completed faster than initially quoted and the quality far exceeded what I expected at the beginning! I definitely would recommend using Marrell and his company Happy Homes.

I am so happy with my new master bathroom. Marrell and his team are meticulous and take great pride in their work, and it shows. They do things the RIGHT way, which is not always the fast way. But that trade off, to me, is well worth it. He makes great suggestions based on experience and has a keen attention to detail. The product vendors that he works with are top-notch. If you are ok with the sub-contractor business model (which is accurately represented here) , Marrell is your guy.

After reading reviews of Tim's work I contacted him to remodel two bathrooms and a fireplace, and it was a good decision. Tim is wonderful to work with. He communicates well, stays on schedule and does great work. His guys are also conscientious, friendly and respectful. One of the bathrooms was a tub to shower conversion and it turned out even better than what I had in mind. The fireplace was also a successful remodel, everyone that sees it cannot believe the difference. I would definitely call Tim again for any remodel needs.

Tim's price, service and work was GREAT, even when the job required more unexpected framing due to some of the framing needed to be replaced. Tim was always keeping me updated on issues and showing me what needed to be replaced so it was not a surprise, Tim worked with us to keep the additional cost down and was VERY FAR with pricing. We are planning to having him do additional work to our house.
