Recent Review: I contacted McCarthy Stones to get several estimates for various hardscaping installations. Chuck came out within a day or two each time to scope out the work, to give advice and to explain the construction and installation necessary. Within 2-3 days, I had my estimates. I started with this small project, leaving other, larger projects open for a later date depending on successful completion of this first project. This project took about 2-1/2 days with rain delays and a broken Mediacom cable (repaired within about 2 hours). Three pieces of heavy equipment dedicated to this project for all 3 days made the job go smoothly and efficiently. Two crew members did the hand labor, a third operated the equipment, others drove the trucks delivering and dumping the stones, which arrived at just the right time with just the right payloads. Most of the time, Michael was on-site to direct his crew and respond to my questions and concerns, measuring and remeasuring distances, re-grading garden edges, laying additional landscape cloth, etc. No one stood around idle at any time, everyone was busy and their work was effective. Digging the 100x4' trench was the most time and labor intensive phase of the project. Excavation was meticulous, thorough, and well-contained, with no impact on adjacent plantings. That trench was a work of art, with the crew using a 3'-wide hand excavator to get the dimensions just right, and a bobcat to carry the heavy loads. The crew measured the depth and width frequently, using shovels to make the trench consistent. Heavy landscape cloth went down, trucks pulled up and carefully dumped one layer of bluestone, which was spread by hand and meticulously tamped by a roller. A second layer of bluestone went down the same way, bringing the drainage rock nearly to street level. Another layer of cloth and the Delaware rock was there, carefully dumped and spread by hand evenly across the strip. Areas dedicated to future driveway openings were carefully covered with smaller rock that could be removed to install drainage pavers. As the job was nearly finished, a heavy rain went through, showing the drainage design to work perfectly. I asked to extend the system another 18', to take the water just far enough to meet the swale, and that extension was estimated the same day and installed the next morning. The crew was courteous, friendly, experienced, and professional. Every stone was swept from the road, every foot of the roadside was leveled and made even using hand rakes. The finish work was as meticulous as construction and installation. No one rushed to leave, and no one left before every stone was in place with nothing out of place. The result was better than I expected and the system functioned exactly as designed. I like the way this company does business. The entire process was smooth and professional, from my first call, to planning and estimation, to construction and installation, to extension of the scope of work, through the finish work. Their prices are fair, they worked hard to get my job done the way I wanted it done, with minimal inconvenience, with effective planning and design, and with meticulous finish work. This company wants repeat business, and they gear everything they do to gaining trust and building loyalty. They've got mine, and I will not hesitate to use McCarthy Stones for my next project.
